by Dave Foreman
It seems like bone health is a major concern of aging women. Thinning bones is not a women–only condition. I have written about osteoporosis and calcium separately in the past. The reason I am writing this is to let you in on a new natural health market product, Bone Strength Take Care™ (New Chapter). I was so excited when this new bone health supplement came out that I immediately went to my local Vitamin Shoppe and purchased it and gave my previous supplement (I won't mention what it was) to a friend of mine. That's how significant I think this is!
Why Is It so Great?
Modern medicine has now shown that if you get your calcium from a food source you will have higher bone density. According to a recent study published in the May 2007 issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, women who get most of their daily calcium from food have healthier bones than women whose calcium comes mainly from supplemental tablets. The study looked closely at the dietary and supplement habits of 183 post menopausal women. The women were divided into three groups based on the habits listed above. The women who consumed 70 percent of their calcium from their diet had higher bone density than the women who consumed 70 percent of there calcium from supplements. The women in the "diet only" group actually consumed an average of 200mg less calcium per day yet had better bone density scores. In my opinion, this was due to the better digestion and absorption of calcium from a food source than a supplement. The calcium complex in Bone Strength Take Care™ comes from Algas Calcareas (AlgaeCal®) that is harvested from the pristine shores of a protected national reserve in South America. The algae are harvested live and then cold processed to lock in nutritional value. This algae naturally contains other trace minerals including strontium, vanadium, boron and silica. Studies have shown that 97 percent of the calcium in AlgaeCal® dissolves in 30 minutes. (using standard dissolution tests) It also combines other nutrients essential for strong bones. Other nutrients added to the food complex are magnesium, Vitamin K2, D3, strontium, Silica and Vanadium, all of which are helpful at some level to maintain or improve bone health.
When possible, I try to get my nutrients from my food. When I can't, I look for whole food supplements. My multivitamin is an organic whole food vitamin designed for men. Now my bone health supplement is a whole food vitamin/mineral too. I will warn you it will cost more...but I'm sure you are worth it.
