Next to the common cold, ear infections are the most commonly diagnosed childhood illness in the United States. More than three out of four children have had at least one ear infection by the time they reach 3 years of age. The ear is responsible for hearing and balance and is made up of three parts - the outer ear, middle ear, and inner ear.To function properly, the middle ear must be at the same pressure as the outside world. This is taken care of by the eustachian tube, a small passage that connects the middle ear to the back of the throat behind the nose. Infection can set in when it becomes blocked. The usual causes are from allergies and colds. A blockage will allow fluid to build up within the normally air-filled middle ear. Bacteria or viruses that have entered the middle ear through the eustachian tube can also get stuck and eventually lead to a middle ear infection.

WHAT CAN INCREASE YOUR RISK?

  1. Weakened immune system
  2. Exposure to cigarette smoke
  3. Swollen glands
  4. Exposure to bacteria and viruses
  5. Poor diet (and food choices)
Believe it or not, most ear infections are caused by a virus and will usually clear up on their own. This is why I do not recommend the use of antibiotics to help with ear infections. While I was in pharmacy school over 20 years ago they taught us that the use of antibiotics with ear infections was foolish.Yet, many doctors still prescribe them. An old timer doctor once said to me: "if someone comes in and spends 35 dollars on their co-pay and leaves without a prescription, they will be mad at me. So, I prescribe a harmless antibiotic to keep them happy. I know it will go away in 7-10 days anyway." Regretfully, I still think he is correct.

Natural is the way to go whether your ear infections are acute or chronic. My 4-Pillars of Health are needed to get the job done though. Obviously lifestyle changes are in order.

Here are a few suggestions:

  • Stop smoking
  • Eliminate common foods that trigger allergies (dairy is the big one with ear infections)
  • Eliminate refined foods (white foods including honey and sugar negatively impact immune function)
  • Eliminate pacifier use with infants.
Besides these changes, use supplements. Short-term, I like zinc, Esberitox®, echinacea and C.They're great for stimulating the immune system, but should only be used for 1-2 weeks. If you suffer from chronic ear infections, supplements like Host Defense or Wellmune WGP can help support your immune function long-term. If swollen glands are the cause of your ear infections, use Esberitox®. I find it clears blocked lymph glands and speeds recovery.

IT'S ALL IN YOUR HEAD

Mind/Spirit is part of my 4-Pillars of Health and plays a huge role in chronic ear infections. Louise Hay mentions in her book, Heal Your Body, that there is an emotional cause for ear aches; it is linked to "Anger. Not wanting to hear.Too much turmoil. Parents arguing." I used to think this was crazy, but when my daughter was 3 she kept having problems with her ears (ear infections). Even though we tried changing her diet and giving her immune supplements her condition kept returning. It wasn't until I read what Louise Hay had to say that I realized my daughter's problem was related to her home life. My daughter's ear problems existed at the same time my ex-wife and I were going through relationship problems and eventually a divorce. When we changed how we interacted, my daughter's earaches went away. My point for bringing up my own personal experience is to show that even if you perform the diet, exercise and supplements right, you may not get the results you expect. To truly be a healthy individual, you need balance in all 4 pillars.
