A Natural Approach to Ear Infectionsby Dave Foreman
Next to the common cold, ear infections are the most commonly diagnosed childhood illness in the United States. More than three out of four children have had at least one ear infection by the time they reach 3 years of age. The ear is responsible for hearing and balance and is made up of three parts - the outer ear, middle ear, and inner ear.To function properly, the middle ear must be at the same pressure as the outside world. This is taken care of by the eustachian tube, a small passage that connects the middle ear to the back of the throat behind the nose. Infection can set in when it becomes blocked. The usual causes are from allergies and colds. A blockage will allow fluid to build up within the normally air-filled middle ear. Bacteria or viruses that have entered the middle ear through the eustachian tube can also get stuck and eventually lead to a middle ear infection.
WHAT CAN INCREASE YOUR RISK?
Natural is the way to go whether your ear infections are acute or chronic. My 4-Pillars of Health are needed to get the job done though. Obviously lifestyle changes are in order.
Here are a few suggestions:
IT'S ALL IN YOUR HEAD
Mind/Spirit is part of my 4-Pillars of Health and plays a huge role in chronic ear infections. Louise Hay mentions in her book, Heal Your Body, that there is an emotional cause for ear aches; it is linked to "Anger. Not wanting to hear.Too much turmoil. Parents arguing." I used to think this was crazy, but when my daughter was 3 she kept having problems with her ears (ear infections). Even though we tried changing her diet and giving her immune supplements her condition kept returning. It wasn't until I read what Louise Hay had to say that I realized my daughter's problem was related to her home life. My daughter's ear problems existed at the same time my ex-wife and I were going through relationship problems and eventually a divorce. When we changed how we interacted, my daughter's earaches went away. My point for bringing up my own personal experience is to show that even if you perform the diet, exercise and supplements right, you may not get the results you expect. To truly be a healthy individual, you need balance in all 4 pillars.
