Jazz Up Your Life with Juice!
by Dave Foreman
Many of my loyal readers, viewers,
and listeners will see the title of
this article and think I have lost
my mind. Writing an article focusing upon
juice is not what you would expect from
The Herbal Pharmacist,® right?
The reason I frequently pick on juices is
not because I am against them, but rather,
I'm against what many of the store-bought
products contain. Often times, juices found in
big grocery or chain stores contain artificial flavors,
colors, preservatives and way too much
sugar. In short, they're not true "juice."
SETTING THE STORY STRAIGHT
I am not against juices or juicing in general. I
think the concept of juicing at home is great. I
am just too lazy to clean up afterwards.
As for juices obtained in retail grocery stores,
I find them to be everything I mentioned
above. Examples like apple and cranberry
often boast 100% real juice content until you
scrutinize the product label and discover a ton
of other ingredients I wouldn't consume or
recommend as part of a sensible diet.
HEALTHY JUICE FOOD?
Health food stores usually stock the juices that
earn my seal of approval. I like to call these
juices functionally healthy or super foods.
Read the label and look for a juice free of
artificial colors with low levels of sugar.
As an added plus, seek out the brands that
contain other health promoting nutrients
like antioxidants and phytochemicals
(plant chemicals).
Drink
Smarter!
Delicious juices that are actually
good for you? It's true! Try adding
one or all of these to your daily menu
for a tasty and nutritious treat.
Goji (goh-jee)
Goji has become one of the hottest
juices to hit the market. Goji is an
exotic super fruit valued for its
reported anti-aging and antioxidant
properties. Treasured for centuries
by the Himalayan people, the berries
of the goji plant are high in trace
minerals, B-vitamins, amino acids
and polysaccharides. Polysaccharides
are naturally occurring compounds
linked to immune and heart health,
anti-aging benefits and more. Goji
is a great addition to your diet, and
the versatile juice can be easily mixed
with any powder or
Mangosteen (mang-guh-steen)
The next big hitter to come to America
is mangosteen. Mangosteen tastes
delicious and like goji, helps promote
great health. It too provides naturally
occurring vitamins, minerals, enzymes,
antioxidants, phytonutrients, and
bioflavonoids. Mangosteen juice can
also be combined with your powder
or liquid supplements.
Pomegranate (pom-gran-it)
In addition to the immune boosting
benefit of antioxidants, pomegranate
is heart healthy, too. One specific
compound found in pomegranate -
punicalagins - has been shown to
specifically promote heart health by
impacting cholesterol and the dilation
of veins and arteries.
Acai (ah-SIGH-ee)
Acai, considered one of nature's "super
berries,"is found in the remote Amazon
rainforest. Similar to the other juices
mentioned, acai is loaded with
phytochemicals plus two of nature's
most potent antioxidants - polyphenols
and anthocyanins. |
