Comments about Vitamin Shoppe Betaine Hcl With Pepsin - 100 Tablets:

I have had terrible heartburn but never when I remember to take the betaine HCL. I take 1 tablet only with meals that include meat. I don't find it hard to swallow as others have mentioned even though some pills give me trouble. This is a large round tablet; I have trouble swallowing capsule shaped pills.

The Twin Lab capsule I use was out of stock so I chose this product. Instead of an easy-to-swallow capsule I got a very large (thick) tablet. Requires more than one swallowing attempt to get it down. Why not a capsule?

Comments about Vitamin Shoppe Betaine Hcl With Pepsin - 100 Tablets:

I started having horrible stomach issues. After eating I would have belching and bad gas. I started doing research and all my symptoms pointed to low acid. I got these and felt IMMEDIATE relief when taking with a meal. It was the first meal I had eaten in weeks where I was gas free.

They are large and not the easiest to swallow. I take 6 with my high-protein meals so I thought getting a capsule would be easier. I tried Twin Labs brand capsules. They did NOT work as well as the VS brand. I am thinking there is something to be said for not having any sort of coating or capsule around the supplement. So I am going back to this brand.

Works fine, but tablets are dry and the size of a toothpaste cap. Tried it for price, but you get what you pay for. It does work though. I take 3-4 per meal, so not so good for me.

lisa o: yes,I used to take papaya enzymes but this seems to work much better. I actually take 3 after each big meal but it depends on you and how well you digestion is. You want to take enough until you feel a slight warm sensation and then back off one. For example I didn't feel anything until I took 4 at a time, so now I take 3. May 11, 2013

Marion F: Yes, it will. My doctor suggested taking one at the start of a meal, and I believe it helps. She also suggested that when taking a pain killer (that I need occasionally and can irritate my stomach), to take two 1/2 hour before the painkiller. That, too, works well.

For a more full treatment of the reflux, I would also suggest taking a digestive enzyme supplement at the start of a meal, and taking (natural) apple cider vinegar. One tablespoon per day in a glass or water bottle, with some sweetener (if desired), or in salad dressing. And I make a bottle of super anti-acid remedy and a sip once or twice a day: aloe vera juice, some apple cider vinegar, splash of bitters, some water, some sweetener.

If nothing else, the ACV is most important, and works for me!

                      Good luck.

Maureen G: I would talk to your health care practitioner before taking Betaine HCl for acid reflux. Some people with acid reflux have a shortage of stomach acid while others do not. Deglycyrrhizinated licorice, or DGL might be a better option. Please consult with an integrative health care practitioner and do your own research. May 11, 2013

Lynda M: Hi. I can see how the peppermint smell and tablet shape are confusing. However, you definitely want to SWALLOW these. Their taste is similar to vinegar, so they in no way would taste like an antacid - just the opposite. It would be a good idea for the Vitamin Shoppe to make a notation on the directions that indicates "NOT CHEWABLE". Great question. I find these work best for me taking them at dinner and starting with one tablet and working up to two tablets over a period of a few days. Good Luck. Jul 27, 2013

Kimberly K: I was having lots of GERD symptoms---burning all the way up to mynose when I bent over......I tried different HCL products but VS Betaine HCL with Pepsin really works.

I take it before meals, with a little water, then eat, and if I eat a well combined meal----it's like a miracle.

Well combined eating is the secret weapon to acid refux and a host of other digestive problems. Harvey Diamond is the author of several books-read Fit for Life, or Suzane Somers book--or just Google Proper Food Combining to learn about how to combine foods.

I also use DGL Deglycyrrhizinated Licorice from the Licorice plant (Glycyrrhiza glabra) for heartburn when I forget to take the Betaine HCL first.

I do not use any ANTI ACID PRODUCTS anymore ! They only make digestion slow to a crawl by diluting the very acids you need to break down your food!

Slippery Elm in chewable tablets--also soothes a burning throat....but most importantly DO NOT mix proteins ---EX: steak Hamburgers with highly refined carbohydrates like buns, potatoes, french fries, rice etc....learn how to combine your foods and you will not suffer like you are now.

Sure hope this helps ! I lost weight, and stopped ALL GERD symptoms when I practice proper food combining
and now only occasionally need Betaine HCL from Vitamin Shoppe---I am in NO WAY affiliated with their stores, website or products.
                      Good Luck !
