    About this product

    What is Omega-3 Fish Oil?

    • Omega-3 fatty acids are polyunsaturated fatty acids that are important nutrients for the body. Omega-3’s are needed for various body functions, such as cell membrane health and integrity. Omega- 3 fats include essential ALA (alpha-linolenic acid), EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid). Omega-3 fats help to support heart, brain and eye health. Cold water fish, such as tuna and salmon, are the best natural sources, but most people don’t consume enough of these foods. They can also be found in plant-based foods such as flax seed and walnuts.

    • EPA and DHA are found in high concentrations in the brain and retina, therefore being critical nutrients for brain and eye health, as well as supporting healthy cognitive function.

This was the first Fish Oil Supplement I have ever taken and I could tell the difference after I used it. After I did some research, I was able to find many brands of fish oil that cost a fraction of the price. But there were two main differences: The cheap brands had only about a third of the OMEGA-3 per pill, and non of them had the "Enteric Coating." All fish oil pills are huge, so the fact that you would only need to take one instead of three is a huge plus. The enteric coating does two things: First it says "burp free" but what it doesn't say is that these pills are odorless in comparison to the alternative. The last alternative brand that I purchased were so smelly that I could not swallow even one (let alone 3). So just for the enteric coating, I find the higher price point well worth it.

I thought I would try these because they were a fraction of the cost of my usual brand. Huge mistake. They taste TERRIBLE and I have awful condensation in the bottle. I keep them refrigerated for freshness. I've never experienced this problem with capsules before. I tried to return my second, unopened bottle but I missed my 30 day return window. Now I'm stuck with these horrible capsules. Maybe the second bottle will be better. Either way, I will be returning to my old brand. I guess sometimes, you really do get what you pay for. I love the Vitamin Shoppe, but these capsules are a swing and a miss.

Comments about the Vitamin Shoppe Omega-3 Fish Oil 1290 MG - 120 Softgels:

My triglycerides were extremely high (in the 1200's) and prescription medications weren't helping to bring it down at all. My doctor told me to take fish oil. I had tried other fish oils before, but quit taking them because of the constant burping and awful taste. I researched and researched and found that Vitamin Shoppe brand had great reviews. 3 months later my triglycerides were down to the 300's. Still high, but waaaaay down. Can't wait to see what another 3 months will do.

Comments about the Vitamin Shoppe Omega-3 Fish Oil 1290 MG - 120 Softgels:

These are surprisingly inexpensive for fish oil caps; I take two a day for health reasons. There's no real aftertaste with them.

I've put them through the "frezzer test" - dropping them into a 0F/-18C freezer for a month to see if there were any changes; frozen or not, there's no difference in the translucency of the pills.

I recommend they be kept in a deep freeze until you need them as they can get a little off-taste if left at room or higher temperatures for long periods. That's the nature of EPA/DHA as they get oxygenated.

All the other softgels have upset my stomach. This one has a type of coating on it that doesn't do that. It's not as soft and squishy as some of the other softgels. I recommend this product. I wish other softgels would do the same.
