But, as any dedicated competitor will tell you, months (even years) of tireless effort and unfaltering discipline go into achieving the lean, toned competition day physique.<\/p>\n<p>We asked five veteran bodybuilders to fill us in on the lifestyle, workouts, and eating habits that have helped them get stage-ready\u2014take a look at the things they\u2019ve learned along the way…<\/p>\n<h3><strong>It’s Not Just About The Gym<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019d say bodybuilding is 90 percent nutrition and 10 percent gym,\u201d says IFBB Pro and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/b\/betancourt-nutrition\/N-90p\" target=\"_blank\">Betancourt Nutrition<\/a> athlete <a href=\"http:\/\/jondelarosa.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jon Delarosa<\/a>. If you want your body to look and function like a Ferrari, you\u2019ve got to put top quality gas and oil into it, he says.<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/BNFi9MnFo1O\/ <\/p>\n<p>Four months out from a physique competition, Delarosa starts to tighten up his nutrition, saying see-ya to cheat meals and prepping foods like eggs, chicken breast, potatoes, and greens.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Bodybuilding Is A Lifestyle<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>\u201cWhen I first got into bodybuilding, I didn\u2019t realize how much dedication and time it would take to compete at an elite level,\u201d says ISBB Pro and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/b\/bpi-sports\/N-cp97eq\" target=\"_blank\">BPI Sport<\/a> athlete <a href=\"http:\/\/courtneykingfit.com\/about-us\/\" target=\"_blank\">Courtney King<\/a>. No mindless grabs from neighbors\u2019 candy bowls or $5 pitcher bar nights with the girls. #Respect.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Prep May Involve Serious Nutritional Strategy <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>\u201cMany bodybuilders manipulate their water and salt intake throughout the competition prep period,\u201d says IFBB pro and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/b\/cellucor\/N-91q\" target=\"_blank\">Cellucor<\/a> athlete <a href=\"http:\/\/livlfe.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Craig Capurso<\/a>. At the beginning of prep, that means taking in tons of water and salt to \u2018teach\u2019 your body to secrete them efficiently. As you get closer to the show, you cut down on your intake in hopes of flushing any excess in your system and looking crazy lean. \u201cAt one point I was drinking three gallons of water a day and putting an entire packet\u2019s worth of salt on every bite of my food,\u201d says Capurso.<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/BCvJQqhxEFX\/ <\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany people really restrict their carbs in the days and weeks leading up to a contest,\u201d says Jewell. \u201cWhile I don\u2019t like to go that hardcore, I\u2019ll cut back on carbs a bit the week before a show, then add them back in the day before.\u201d Your muscles suck those carbs right up just in time for you to take the stage.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>You Don\u2019t Have To Be A Slave To Cardio<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>\u201cBefore becoming a competitive bodybuilder, my workouts usually consisted of lots of cardio with maybe 10 minutes of strength training,\u201d says national NPC bikini competitor and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/b\/muscletech\/N-976\" target=\"_blank\">MuscleTech<\/a> athlete <a href=\"http:\/\/www.katiemillerfitness.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Katie Miller<\/a>. \u201cI was scared to cut back on cardio and focus on strength training, but it wasn\u2019t until I lifted every day and slashed cardio that I started seeing the muscle and results I wanted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/BNQu2JGjQDL\/ <\/p>\n<h3><strong>Bodybuilders Don\u2019t Look Crazy-Lean Year-Round<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>\u201cThe first time I saw a training magazine, I thought the women looked the way they did at a competition all year long,\u201d says Jewell. \u201cCompetitors often tweak their nutrition by dropping carbs and water intake before a show in order to achieve that lean look day of, but those strategies aren\u2019t sustainable all the time.\u201d Keep in mind the next time you see a super-shredded bikini competitor on Instagram: Those eight-pack abs aren\u2019t an everyday reality, and she gets bloated on Thanksgiving, too.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We\u2019ve all ogled extremely defined six-packs on Instagram or wondered how that girl at the gym got so shredded.
