(And rightly so, since it\u2019s packed with a powerful antioxidant called curcumin.)<\/p>\n<p>First came \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/blog\/2017\/04\/27\/30-days-turmeric-golden-milk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">golden milk\u2019<\/a> (a latte made with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/superfoods-groceries\/N-cp99ks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">coconut milk<\/a>, turmeric, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/honey\/N-cp99kw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">honey<\/a>), then came <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/turmeric\/N-cp99m2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">turmeric<\/a> face masks, next an explosion of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/herbal-teas\/N-cp99me\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">turmeric teas<\/a>, and now\u2014turmeric teeth whitening?<\/p>\n<p>Yep, Pinterest junkies and DIY beauty lovers are slathering the brightly-colored spice all over their chompers to <em>whiten<\/em> them. Here\u2019s how it works, according to the many \u2018experts\u2019 of the internet: Mix two parts ground turmeric with one part <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/coconut-oil\/N-cp99kv\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">coconut oil<\/a> (and sometimes one part baking soda, too), brush your teeth with the paste for two minutes\u2014and voila\u2014(potentially) pearlier whites.<\/p>\n<!-- Shortcode [rr-products] does not match the conditions -->\n<p>So, is this a fad or is turmeric a long lost cousin of Colgate? Well, according to a review published in <em><a href=\"http:\/\/c34193.sgvps.net\/~mauricez\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/0a85e5363db6c7aef4000000.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Molecular Nutrition and Food Research<\/a>, <\/em>turmeric does possess some oral health potential:<em> <\/em>Both turmeric water rinses and turmeric paste have been used in Chinese and Indian traditional medicine for minor mouth maladies, like irritated gums. And a 2015 study published in the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4784123\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">International Quarterly Journal of Ayurveda<\/a><\/em> found that turmeric gel supported gum and oral health.<\/p>\n<p>However, while the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/antioxidants\/N-cp99id\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">antioxidants<\/a> in turmeric might support healthy gums, the only ingredient in this mixture that bears any real whitening potential is the baking soda, says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/jblassociates\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jonathan Levine<\/a>, D.M.D., program director of advanced aesthetics in dentistry at NYU School of Dentistry. \u201cSodium bicarbonate [that\u2019s baking soda] is a great ingredient for the mouth,\u201d he says. \u201cIt\u2019s not very abrasive and won\u2019t scratch teeth, can deodorize the mouth, and lift some of the stains off of teeth.\u201d Turmeric, though? There\u2019s very little research to support its whitening powers, Levine says. Womp.<\/p>\n<p>Facts aside, I still had to try it for myself\u2014if just to compare it to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/blog\/2017\/03\/01\/activated-charcoal-teeth-test\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">brushing with activated charcoal…<\/a><\/p>\n<p>I wouldn\u2019t call my teeth yellow\u2014I don\u2019t miss a millimeter when I brush, and I floss pretty much every day. But I <em>would<\/em> call my teeth dull. Perfectly <em>meh<\/em>\u2014a lameness that seems especially obvious against my translucent-pale complexion.<\/p>\n<p><noscript><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" I mixed turmeric, baking soda, and coconut oil in a small bowl and headed to the bathroom. <em>Here goes nothing.<\/em> I dipped my toothbrush into my golden paste, and got to my brush even touched my teeth. My minty toothpaste-accustomed taste buds were surprised by the savory flavor. water. It took four rounds of swishing to wash everything out. I spent a minute or two scrubbing my sink (which is white) to get rid of the faint orangey hue the paste had left behind. I tried washing it out of my toothbrush, but that turmeric tint was going <em>nowhere<\/em>\u2014so I just accepted the fact that the bristles would be permanently stained. Another place the turmeric color lingered? The corners of my mouth. Two little patches of jaundiced-looking yellow\u2014how cute. So began round three of scrubbing. Luckily, the color disappeared with a wet paper towel and a little elbow grease.<\/p>\n<p>But my teeth! After all that, I inspected the final result: bright and shiny. They felt squeaky clean and perhaps looked even a little bit whiter. This skeptic was quite surprised\u2014though I knew my sparkly-looking smile was likely thanks to the baking soda, not the golden turmeric.<\/p>\n<p><noscript><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\"
