These colorful blends can be more satisfying than traditional smoothies because they offer mouthfuls of tasty ingredients like fruit and granola, plus they’re just so pretty to look at! However, as healthy as they appear, not all smoothie bowls are created with balanced nutrition in mind. In fact, depending on what you dump in your blender, you could end up with a calorie bomb that\u2019s more dessert than health food.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile the ingredients are often considered \u2018healthy,\u2019 it\u2019s very easy to have too much of a good thing,\u201d says <a href=\"http:\/\/tastybalancenutrition.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lindsey Pine<\/a>, R.D. \u201cAnd while many smoothie bowls that we see on social media are beautiful, they are often way too large!\u201d For example: Though Juice Press\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/juicepress.com\/shop\/smoothies\/acai-blueberry-bowl\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A\u00e7ai Blueberry Bowl<\/a> serves up a reasonable 370 calories, it packs a whopping 41 grams (that\u2019s 10 teaspoons!) of sugar and just six grams of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/protein\/N-cp99j4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">protein<\/a>\u2014not the ideal nutritional balance.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some common mistakes that make for a not-so-healthy smoothie bowl, along with tips for building a better one.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Mistake #1: You Overdo it on the Fruit<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>No nutritionist is going to argue that fruit on your plate (or in your bowl) is a bad thing\u2014most of us don\u2019t eat enough of it! But that strategy can backfire when you\u2019re dumping fruit into the blender and then also topping your smoothie with it. Although fruits contain antioxidants and other valuable nutrients, they also contain natural sugars\u2014which is why the <a href=\"http:\/\/choosemyplate.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">USDA<\/a> recommends the average adult stick to about one and a half to two cups per day.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s pretty easy to surpass this recommendation when you make a smoothie bowl\u2014especially if you also use fruit juice as your liquid. Plus, when your smoothie bowl is fruit-focused, you miss out on the opportunity to balance fat, protein, and carbohydrates (which makes for a filling and healthy meal), says <a href=\"https:\/\/emilykylenutrition.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Emily Kyle<\/a>, R.D. After all, your body needs fat and protein for a number of functions, and the two macronutrients help keep your blood sugar more stable when you consume carbs.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Mistake #2: You Skip Out on Veggies<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>If there\u2019s one food group we should be incorporating into as many meals as possible, it\u2019s veggies. \u201cSmoothie bowls are an excellent way to incorporate vegetables into your diet in a way that even the most picky eater is likely to enjoy,\u201d says Kyle. Mild-flavored veggies like spinach, cauliflower, and yellow squash are totally undetectable in a flavorful smoothie bowl and provide a number of important <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/letter-vitamins\/N-cp99hy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">vitamins<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Mistake #3: You Opt For Flavored Yogurt or Sweetened Liquid<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>When you\u2019re already including naturally sweet fruit in your smoothie bowl, you don\u2019t need extra sugar coming from flavored yogurt. Plant-based milks like almond or soy milk can also contain a few grams of hidden sweeteners, says Kyle. Same goes for fruit juice\u2014just another contributor to a sugar-bomb smoothie bowl.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Mistake #4: You Load Up on Granola<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/snacks\/N-cp99lg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Granola<\/a>, as delightfully crunchy and sweet as it may be, has definitely come under fire for being loaded with sugar\u2014and that goes for both store-bought and homemade varieties. Often, you\u2019re just adding extra sugar and calories to the bowl, says Pine. A tablespoon of chopped nuts or seeds would provide the same crunch factor, plus some protein, she says.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Mistake #5: You Treat Your Bowl Like Dessert<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Sorry to be a buzzkill, but a heavy-handed drizzle of chocolate sauce, spoonfuls of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/baking\/N-cp99lr\">chocolate chips<\/a>, or other undeniably indulgent ingredients end up transforming your smoothie bowl to a sundae. \u201cI\u2019ve seen smoothie bowls with chunks of candy bars,\u201d says Pine. Even in crumbles, a Snickers bar isn\u2019t a health food\u2014no how many Instagram foodies say so.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Mistake #6: You Go Overboard on Toppings and Extras<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The more ingredients, the prettier and more satisfying the smoothie bowl, right? When you\u2019ve got avocado, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/nut-butters-spreads\/N-cp99ls\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">nut butter<\/a>, walnuts, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/healthy-eating-chia\/N-7u8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">chia seeds<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/superfoods-groceries\/N-cp99ks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">coconut flakes<\/a> on top of your bowl, you\u2019re surely adding some nutritional value, but you\u2019re also adding a ton of extra calories and sugar, says Pine. Choosing a couple of toppings and actually measuring them out (two tablespoons total, tops) is key to avoid overdosing on extras. And if you just can\u2019t go without the banana slices or berries on top of your bowl, set aside a few pieces of the fruit you\u2019re blending into the smoothie itself for your toppings later.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Mistake #7: You\u2019re Getting Honey Involved<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>You get the picture by now\u2014extra sugar in your smoothie bowl is a no-no if you\u2019re trying to make it a health conscious meal. \u201cSmoothie bowls made with fruit generally don\u2019t need added sweeteners because the fruit provides natural sweetness to the bowl,\u201d says Kyle. If you\u2019re blending a veggie-heavy and low-sugar smoothie and <em>need<\/em> that hint of sweetness, make sure you don\u2019t get carried away with that drizzle of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/honey\/N-cp99kw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">honey<\/a>. You want your smoothie bowl to be about 50 percent complex carbs, 25 percent protein, and 25 percent heart-healthy fats, according to Kyle. \u201cA balanced bowl should contain a variety of fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and some elements of either plant-based or animal-based milks or yogurts.”<\/p>\n<p>Make your next smoothie bowl a healthier one by following Pine\u2019s formula for a balanced blend:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 1: <\/strong>Start with veggies. Add either one heaping cup of leafy greens (like spinach or kale) or a half cup of other veggies (like zucchini, cauliflower, or cucumber).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 2: <\/strong>Then add one cup (or less) of fruit. Add a half cup of plain Greek or skyr yogurt, three ounces of silken tofu (it blends well, don\u2019t worry!), or a scoop of your favorite <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/protein\/N-cp99j4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">protein powder<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 4: <\/strong>Add your liquid, starting with a quarter cup of water or milk, (add more if you prefer a thinner texture). For an extra protein bump, you can use cow\u2019s milk or plain kefir (which also contains gut-supporting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/probiotics\/N-cp99jn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">probiotics<\/a>), since they pack more protein than plant-based milks.<\/p>\n<p>You can add a tablespoon of nut butter or a third of an avocado for a thicker smoothie, but keep in mind that it counts toward one of your toppings. (We\u2019ll get to that below!)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 5: <\/strong>Add <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/superfoods\/N-cp99kt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">superfood<\/a> powders. Unsweetened <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/superfoods-groceries\/N-cp99ks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cocoa<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/green-tea\/N-cp99mf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">matcha<\/a> powder, for example, provide a healthy dose of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/antioxidants\/N-cp99id\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">antioxidants<\/a>. (You\u2019ll probably need about a tablespoon each.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 6: <\/strong>If you must, add honey. Just keep it to one teaspoon max, says Pine.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 7: <\/strong>Topping time! This is the fun part, right? Choose two or three toppings and add a tablespoon max of each.
