But other reasons for green tea\u2019s many health benefits? Antioxidant plant compounds called polyphenols\u2014the most well-known of which is EGCG. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/antioxidants\/N-cp99id\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Antioxidants <\/a>help fight damage from free radicals and support our cardiovascular health and immune function.)<\/p>\n<p>This powerhouse antioxidant does you some good in the weight-management department by helping your body ward off the stress of a reduced-calorie diet or frequent workouts, according to Brian Tanzer, M.S., C.N.S., manager of scientific affairs for The Vitamin Shoppe. \u201cWhen you\u2019re exercising and consuming fewer calories to manage your weight, you may not be taking in enough antioxidants, so having extra antioxidant support is helpful,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>Plus, EGCG blocks your body\u2019s uptake of the hormone <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/science\/norepinephrine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">norepinephrine<\/a>, which is released to shift your body into \u2018fight-or-flight\u2019 mode when it\u2019s faced with stress\u2014like working out. Because norepinephrine boosts your heart rate and blood pressure, it also kicks up your metabolism. So, by keeping norepinephrine circulating in your system, EGCG helps your body stay stimulated, and burn more calories, Tanzer explains.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Related: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/blog\/2017\/06\/14\/natural-metabolism-boost\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>7 Natural Ways To Kick-Start Your Metabolism<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Check this out: According to a study published in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18468736\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Clinical Nutrition<\/em><\/a><em>,<\/em> obese women who supplemented with 857 milligrams of EGCG daily for 12 weeks saw better improvements in waist circumference and body mass than those who did not.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Picking A Supp:<\/strong> Many supplements list just \u201cgreen tea extract\u201d on their labels, but if you want to maximize the benefits of EGCG, look for a supplement that specifically says it\u2019s standardized to 50 percent EGCG, says Tanzer. You\u2019ll want at least 500 milligrams of EGCG throughout the day, so look for two to three daily doses of between 500 and 1,000 milligrams total. Just keep in mind that in many supps, EGCG is paired with caffeine. Look for something that\u2019s just straight-up EGCG if you’re staying stimulant-free.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>CLA (Conjugated Linoleic Acid)<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>CLA is a type of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/profile\/Martha_Belury\/publication\/11319138_Dietary_conjugated_linoleic_acid_in_health_Physiological_effects_and_mechanisms_of_action\/links\/0046352401ef315a27000000\/Dietary-conjugated-linoleic-acid-in-health-Physiological-effects-and-mechanisms-of-action.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">polyunsaturated fatty acid<\/a> naturally found in animal proteins like beef and dairy products. Yes, we\u2019re talking about a fat in relation to weight management. Why? \u201cCLA inhibits an enzyme that\u2019s involved in activating fat storage,\u201d says Tanzer. For example, a study published in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19494028\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Journal of Nutrition<\/em><\/a> found that when postmenopausal women consumed 5.5 grams of mixed CLA daily for 16 weeks, they experienced better improvements in body weight and fat mass than those who did not.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Picking A Supp: <\/strong>Since the dosage that\u2019s been effective in studies is fairly high, you\u2019ll want to look for a CLA supplement that provides between three and six grams total per day, says Tanzer. (Often that\u2019s broken up into one or two grams at a time, two or three times per day.)<\/p>\n<h2><strong>L-Carnitine<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Made from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/amino-acids\/N-cp99ic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">amino acids<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/amino-acids\/N-cp99ic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">lysine<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/amino-acids\/N-cp99ic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">methionine<\/a>, L-carnitine is a natural-occurring compound that helps the body turn fat into energy. (It\u2019s also found in red meat.) \u201cBasically, L-carnitine carries fatty acids into the mitochondria, which is the cell\u2019s furnace, where they can be turned into cellular energy called ATP,\u201d says Tanzer. Because of its role in fat metabolism, L-carnitine may play a role in body composition and support weight management, according to a review published in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/303107660_The_effect_of_L-Carnitine_on_weight_loss_in_adults_A_systematic_review_and_meta-analysis_of_randomized_controlled_trials\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Obesity Reviews<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<!-- Shortcode [rr-products] does not match the conditions -->\n<p>Plus, being well-stocked on L-carnitine is also especially important if you\u2019re doing lots of cardio\u2014since your body relies mostly on fat for fuel after an hour or so, when you\u2019ve probably burned through your glycogen stores, Tanzer says. (Glycogen is the fuel we store from carbs.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Picking A Supp: <\/strong>L-carnitine is a common component of preworkout formulas, so there\u2019s a chance you\u2019re already taking some! To make the most of its benefits, though, Tanzer recommends supplementing with between one and three grams of L-carnitine per day.
