We touched base with Becca Lucas, the owner of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.barreandanchor.com\">Barre &amp; Anchor,<\/a> a barre studio in Weston, MA, to get the basics on barre workouts, and find out what kind of results you can expect from them.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What Exactly Is Barre?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>This trendy class blends ballet-based exercises (think: tiny, isometric movements, like plies), yoga, pilates, and core work, requiring you to use your own body weight to create resistance, which increases endurance and stamina, explains Lucas.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/blog\/2017\/07\/10\/how-to-make-bodyweight-exercises-harder\/\">How To Make 5 Basic Bodyweight Exercises SO Much Harder<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The exercises are lower-impact (read: fewer knee or back troubles here) and apply little stress to the joints. Better yet, while you might <em>feel <\/em>like a ballerina at the bar, no prior dance or ballet experience is necessary, she notes.<\/p>\n<p>Expect moves such as planks, push-ups, bicep curls with light weights (these are usually quite light, around two- or three-pounds), and tricep dips. You\u2019ll also perform those burns-so-good thigh exercises, like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=2i-h2t6rqrg\">fold-overs<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=LM6PnYdkgCQ\">pretzels<\/a> for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/blog\/2017\/07\/26\/glute-exercises\/\">glutes work.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not all about the legs, though: You can expect a section of class to focus on the abdominals and back, as well. Classes finish with a cool-down stretch, helping you rest and lengthen the muscles.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/goal-energy-vitality\/N-cp98xp\">Shop energy-boosting products to kick your next workout into gear.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><strong>What Are The Benefits?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Expect to gain a toned body, improved posture, increased flexibility, improved range of motion, and muscle endurance, Lucas says.<\/p>\n<p>Look at a barre class from a distance and you might not notice much movement. But that\u2019s the idea: \u00a0\u201cIsometric contractions or movements involve tensing the muscle without changing the length of it,\u201d explains Lucas. \u201cWith each isometric movement, you target the tiny muscles that may get ignored if you&#8217;re sticking to exercises with larger ranges of motion. By repeating these small movements, you\u2019re able to build up endurance, better balance, and posture.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Plus, you\u2019re going to <em>really <\/em>feel the burn. Unlike other fitness classes (such as cycling or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/blog\/2017\/05\/16\/hiit-workout-benefits\/\">HIIT<\/a>), barre workouts work muscles to fatigue, target each muscle group from all angles, and strengthen unused muscles, says Lucas.<\/p>\n<p>Ever experience \u2018the shakes\u2019 when working out? Classes incorporate upper body, lower body, and core strength. \u201cYour core is used for at least 80 percent off the entire class, notes Lucas. Good news, considering a stronger core means better posture and less lower back pain.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Who Is Barre For?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>You don\u2019t have to be a ClassPass regular or a ballerina to sign up. \u201cEveryone benefits from taking barre,\u201d says Lucas. Anyone looking to improve their posture, lift their seat, shrink their waist, tighten their core, and boost their confidence can reap the rewards.<\/p>\n<p>Plus, it\u2019s a great addition to a workout routine that\u2019s cardio-heavy or one that doesn\u2019t always include core exercises.
