We know it feels like you\u2019re in the trenches\u2014so we\u2019ve got a few more strategies for winning your family over to clean eating with less stress (and more nutrients!).<\/p>\n<p>Here are five tips for getting your kids to actually <em>want<\/em> to eat clean:<\/p>\n<h3><strong>1. Give only \u2018great\u2019 choices. <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Serve only foods you feel really good about serving\u2014 broiled meat or fish, roasted vegetables, or a big crunchy salad\u2014and let the kids know you\u2019re excited about them. Chances are, they won\u2019t be licking their plates clean the first time, but that\u2019s okay. Your kids will be more inclined to move towards these new \u2018great\u2019 choices when \u2018bad\u2019 choices are off the table. (Can you really expect them to pick green beans when there are French fries on the table?)<\/p>\n<p>Remove their temptations so they have a chance to get acquainted with your new eating style and find healthy foods they like. If you\u2019re desperate, you can always offer an easy real food option like scrambled eggs, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/search\/healthy-kitchen\/N-cp98h2?search=oatmeal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">oatmeal<\/a>, or rice pasta tossed with frozen veggies, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/search\/healthy-kitchen\/N-cp98h2?search=olive%20oil\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">olive oil<\/a>, and Parmesan cheese. Use this technique sparingly, though. Do it too often and you\u2019ll set the expectation that you\u2019re a short-order cook!<\/p>\n<h3><strong>2. Don\u2019t force anything. <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Implement the rule that your kids need to try everything at least once. We call it the <em>\u2018no, thank you bite<\/em>.\u2019 If they don\u2019t like it, don\u2019t sweat it. Don\u2019t bat an eye and don\u2019t make a fuss about it. A hungry kid will eventually find something they like and eat it up. And it\u2019s okay if they eat just broccoli at dinner one night, because their food choices will balance out over the course of the week. Another benefit of the <em>\u2018no, thank you bite\u2019<\/em> is that you can prepare foods you like (but know your kids won\u2019t be crazy about) provided you also offer something that you know they\u2019ll like better. This is a great way to introduce your kids to more exotic meals like curry, stir-fry, chili, new vegetables, salads, etc.<\/p>\n<p>If one of your sides is Brussels sprouts (which you love but the little guy probably won\u2019t), make the other side something you know he\u2019ll eat. If you think your kids will be skeeved by the main dish, set some plain protein aside for them. As long as there\u2019s <em>something<\/em> on the table they\u2019ll eat and they\u2019ve taken their \u2018<em>no, thank you bite,\u2019 <\/em>you\u2019re good!<\/p>\n<h3><strong>3. Cook with your kids. <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Getting your kids in the kitchen and cooking is a great way to introduce them to new foods and get them interested in this new style of eating. Kids are also more apt to try a new dish when they\u2019ve helped prepare it.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>4. Eat together.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Make it a priority to dine together at least a few times each week. Family meals are a great chance for you to be a healthy eating role model. Our kids watch and hear everything we do and say, so if we\u2019re enjoying nutritious foods, the chances are good that they\u2019ll be more receptive to trying them, too. Plus, according to <a href=\"http:\/\/thefamilydinnerproject.org\/about-us\/benefits-of-family-dinners\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Family Dinner Project<\/a>, eating meals together has numerous benefits for kids, like:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>Better academic performance<\/li>\n<li>Higher self-esteem<\/li>\n<li>Greater sense of resilience<\/li>\n<li>Lower risk of substance abuse<\/li>\n<li>Lower risk of teen pregnancy<\/li>\n<li>Lower risk of depression<\/li>\n<li>Lower likelihood of developing eating disorders<\/li>\n<li>Lower rates of obesity<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3><strong>5. Be patient. <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Kids may need to try something 10 times before deciding whether or not they like it. Hang in there and continue to offer healthier food choices\u2014and don\u2019t be so quick to offer a second option as soon as they turn their noses up at what you\u2019ve placed in front of them. And if they excuse themselves without really eating only to return with \u201cI\u2019m hungry\u201d shortly after the meal, kindly offer them the meal again without judgment, punishment, or negativity.<\/p>\n<p>The bottom line: Every family (and family member) is different, and depending on how deeply entrenched old behaviors and food preferences are, it can take anywhere from weeks to years to really get everyone on board. Go easy on yourself.
