Eating clean, exercising regularly, and getting quality sleep can help ensure a properly functioning reproductive system. <\/span><span class=\"s1\">But you can take all of that a step further by adding certain supplements to your wellness routine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Here are eight expert- and science-backed supplements that can help promote a healthy reproductive system. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>1. Omega-3S<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s3\">Omega-3 fatty acids (found in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/search?search=Fish%252Boil\"><span class=\"s2\">fish oil<\/span><\/a> and some plant-based oils, like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/search?search=flaxseed%252Boil\"><span class=\"s2\">flaxseed<\/span><\/a>) are often lauded for their ability to support brain and heart health.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>But they\u2019re also good for overall female reproductive health, notes Sheeva Talebian, MD, co-founder of Truly MD and director of third party reproduction at the Colorado Center for Reproductive Medicine in New York City.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>That\u2019s because they include something called essential fatty acids,<\/span><span class=\"s1\"> which are key for our biological processes. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Research proves it, too: A study published in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/28707491\"><span class=\"s2\"><i>Journal of Psychosomatic Obstetrics &amp; Gynecology<\/i><\/span><\/a> looked at women aged 20-35 who were suffering from PMS, and concluded that taking an omega-3 supplement supported good health during menstruation. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\">Dr. Talebian recommends purified fish oil, but advises steering away from cod liver oil, as some have very high levels of vitamins A and D and can contain heavy metals.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s1\">2. <b>DIM<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\">Diindolylmethane, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/search?search=DIM\"><span class=\"s2\">DIM,<\/span><\/a> is the breakdown product of indole 3-carbinol, the phytochemical found in veggies like broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and cabbage. It packs a powerful punch for your whole body but specifically aids in promoting a healthy estrogen balance. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\">Plus, DIM improves the healthy utilization of the hormone testosterone. (Yep, even women need testosterone.) \u201cTestosterone balance aids bone health, brain health, heart health, and sexual health,\u201d says Dr. Michele\u00a0Sherwood, DO, co-author of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Fork-Your-Diet-Master-Fundamentals\/dp\/193648742X\"><span class=\"s2\"><i>Fork Your Diet<\/i><\/span><\/a> and founder of the Functional Medical Institute of Tulsa, Oklahoma. DIM also promotes a healthy metabolism. Win-win!<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s3\">3. <b>L-Arginine<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/search?search=l-arginine\">L-Arginine<\/a><\/span><span class=\"s1\">, an amino acid and a building block of protein, promotes various functions in the body, but\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">Dr. Talebian especially likes it for women\u2019s health.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThis [is an] amino acid that helps with cell division, immune function, and the release of hormones,\u201d says Talebian.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s3\">4. <b>Folate<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s3\">This is one of the most important nutrients for reproductive health, notes nutritionist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.districtnutrition.com\/\"><span class=\"s5\">Victoria J. Lindsay, RD<\/span><\/a><\/span><span class=\"s1\">. \u201cFolate is a type of B-vitamin required for DNA synthesis and the formation of new cells in the body,\u201d Lindsay explains.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/search?search=Folate\">Folate<\/a> is especially important for its role in ovarian health and in the prevention of birth defects. \u201cDuring pregnancy, the developing fetus requires folate to form new organs and tissues, and a deficiency in folate can result in a higher risk of neural tube defects,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Don\u2019t just take folate when you\u2019re preparing for pregnancy, though. All women of reproductive age should be taking folate daily\u2014in case of unexpected pregnancy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">5. <b>Iron<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThis nutrient plays a big role in transporting oxygen throughout the body, as well as creating protein and helping with the body\u2019s energy production,\u201d explains Lindsay. And women are at extra risk for iron deficiency due to losing blood during menstruation. While an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/iron\/N-8ds?search1=iron\">iron<\/a>\u00a0deficiency can manifest itself in issues like increased fatigue, low levels have also caused fertility issues. In fact, the journal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17077236\"><span class=\"s7\"><i>Obstetrics and Gynecology<\/i><\/span><\/a> found a link between <\/span><span class=\"s3\">the consumption of iron supplements and fertility.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">That said, you\u2019ll do well to proceed with caution when supplementing with iron, as too much iron in the body may have adverse health effects, Lindsay notes. \u201cMonitor dosage and work with a physician when wanting to increase iron intake,\u201d she advises. (And for women who don\u2019t need to supplement with iron but want to take a multivitamin, multis are available <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/p\/one-daily-women-50-no-iron-60-tablets\/vs-3123\"><span class=\"s7\">without iron<\/span><\/a>). <\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p7\"><span class=\"s3\">6. <b>Flaxseed and flaxseed oil<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p7\"><span class=\"s3\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/search?search=flaxseed%2Boil\">Flaxseed,<\/a> as mentioned above, is a rich source of the essential fatty acid alpha-linolenic acid (ALA)\u2014good for our overall health and menstrual symptoms. <\/span><span class=\"s1\"> And the lignans (a type of health-promoting polyphenol) in flaxseed are thought to have some antioxidant properties that may support healthy estrogen activity, according to the journal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/20425756\"><span class=\"s7\"><i>Molecular Nutrition and Food Research<\/i><\/span><\/a><i>.<\/i> <\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">7. <b>Probiotics<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">All women can benefit from taking\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/search?search=probiotics%252C\">probiotics,<\/a>\u00a0says Lindsay.
