Rarely do we consider what our bodies will need and want down the road. After all, \u201cfuture us\u201d seems so far away.<\/p>\n<p>But adopting certain healthy habits at a younger age (read: right this minute) can not only provide benefits for you in the present, but reap major rewards down the road.<\/p>\n<p>Consider this: A study published in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mayoclinicproceedings.org\/article\/S0025-6196(16)30683-8\/fulltext\"><em>Mayo Clinic Proceedings<\/em><\/a> revealed that exercise capacity is \u201cstrongly associated with cognitive function.\u201d Researchers learned that participants who actively worked out a few times per week lowered their risk of cognitive decline issues, such as Alzheimer\u2019s disease. So when you\u2019re hitting the treadmill, you\u2019re keeping yourself looking good today, sure\u2014while doing all you can to safeguard the future.<\/p>\n<p>But this isn\u2019t only about putting in time at the gym. There are plenty of good-for-you habits to incorporate into your everyday that are excellent investments in your future health. And some of them won\u2019t even require you to break a sweat.<\/p>\n<h2>1. Turn Off Your Tech<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cTry doing a digital “detox”,\u201d says Samir Becic, fitness trainer and author of<em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/ReSYNC-Your-Life-Stronger-Smarter\/dp\/071808988X\/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1505314717&sr=1-1\">ReSYNC Your Life<\/a>.<\/em> It may sound harsh, but remove the TV from your bedroom in order to have better REM sleep (rapid eye movement, or deep sleep), he explains. \u201cPeople don’t realize the enormous negative impact technology has on our health if it is used excessively,\u201d he says. \u201cNot only on our joints, but on our eyes, back, cognitive thinking, and mood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A 2013 study published in <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cell.com\/current-biology\/fulltext\/S0960-9822(13)00764-1\">Current Biology<\/a><\/em> determined that modern light exposure contributes to later sleep schedules, which only serves to disrupt our natural sleep and circadian clocks. Start flossing.<\/h2>\n<p>While daily flossing may seem like a no-brainer, a 2015 Harris Poll conducted on behalf of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ada.org\/en\/science-research\/science-in-the-news\/the-medical-benefit-of-daily-flossing-called-into-question\">American Academy of Periodontology<\/a> revealed that 27 percent of U.S. adults lie to their dentist about how often they <em>really<\/em> partake in the activity (we won\u2019t tell if you start flossing today!). For example, it may take decades\u2014yes, you read that correctly\u2014of cumulative sun exposure or indoor tanning to cause skin cancer. It\u2019s reasonable to expect that sun exposure 10 or 15 years ago may result in wrinkles appearing <em>now.<\/em> So, be sure to use sunscreens with SPF 30 or higher that protect against UVA and UVC rays.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/wrinkles\/manage\/ptc-20265800\">The American Academy of Dermatology<\/a>, broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or more should be used year-round, not just when the sun is high and hot. It\u2019s considered to be the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2699641\/\">gold standard<\/a> in reducing fine lines and wrinkles, as well as boosting collagen growth. And, says Lortscher, \u201cIt\u2019s the main anti-aging strategy (after sunscreen) of many dermatologists for their own skin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But what is retinol? According to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/wrinkles\/in-depth\/wrinkle-creams\/art-20047463\">Mayo Clinic<\/a>, it\u2019s a vitamin A compound and an antioxidant. Meditate<\/h2>\n<p>Considering the difficulties we face finding the time to eat a meal in peace, you may be wondering when, pray tell, you\u2019re supposed to have the time to sit and meditate. But carving out even just a few minutes for the practice can harvest benefits far beyond clearing your mind.<\/p>\n<p>According to a study published in <em><a href=\"http:\/\/journals.lww.com\/psychosomaticmedicine\/Abstract\/2003\/07000\/Alterations_in_Brain_and_Immune_Function_Produced.14.aspx\">Psychosomatic Medicine<\/a>,<\/em> mindful meditation can actually boost immune function, with researchers finding increases in antibody titers (the way doctors learn if your body is fighting a virus) to the flu vaccine among those who were in the meditation control group.<\/p>\n<p>And don\u2019t worry about being a meditation pro, says positive psychology and coach <a href=\"http:\/\/www.drcoxconsulting.com\">Dr. Barbara Cox, PhD<\/a>, who encourages her patients to find a method that works for them.<\/p>\n<p>What works best? \u201cIt can be something as simple as focusing on calming music or saying a positive affirmation,\u201d she says. \u201cMeditation is a very helpful tool for stress because by doing it regularly it can prevent stress.
