Ginger<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/search?search=Ginger\">Ginger<\/a> is not only delicious and warming during crisp evenings, but it may help stabilize<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/20730603\">&nbsp;cholesterol levels,<\/a>&nbsp;explains Emaline K. Brown, ND, a naturopathic doctor at <a href=\"http:\/\/bastyrclinic.org\/\">Bastyr University Clinic<\/a> in San Diego, CA.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s also known as a go-to for gastrointestinal discomfort. \u201cMany times these issues are a result of internal inflammation,\u201d explains Claire Martin, RD, a nutritionist and cofounder of <a href=\"https:\/\/beinghealthfull.com\/\">Being Healthfull<\/a> from Oakland, CA. So, if you have an irritated esophagus, ginger can help soothe your throat.<\/p>\n<p>Plus, if you\u2019re traveling this holiday season to visit loved ones, it doesn\u2019t hurt to reach for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/search?search=Ginger\">ginger,<\/a> which can ease stomach discomfort related to plane or car travel, Dr. Brown notes.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>2. Cinnamon <\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>It\u2019s pretty much impossible to avoid this staple spice in the cooler months, as it\u2019s used in a bevy of seasonal dishes\u2014from pumpkin loaves to holiday cookies. But don\u2019t worry about overdoing it: \u201cCinnamon may help balance out spikes in blood sugar from that extra slice of apple pie,\u201d says Dr. Brown.<\/p>\n<p>Research published in <em>the <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21480806\"><em>Journal of Medicinal Food<\/em><\/a> points out that cinnamon is \u201ca rich botanical source of polyphenolics [a.k.a health-boosting micronutrients] that has been used for centuries in Chinese medicine and has been shown to affect blood glucose and insulin signaling.\u201d Credit goes to the spice\u2019s ability to \u201cincrease insulin receptors, which take sugar into the cells for energy,\u201d explains <a href=\"http:\/\/www.drserenagoldstein.com\/\">Serena Goldstein, ND<\/a>, a naturopathic doctor in New York, NY. Cardamom<\/h2>\n<p>Called the \u201cQueen of spices\u201d in India,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/search?search=cardamom\">cardamom<\/a> is a smoky, flavorful spice that comes in two varieties\u2014brown and green. Green cardamom is generally used in the winter in both sweet foods (like cakes) and savory foods (like curry). It\u2019s recommended that you use the whole cardamom pod\u2014versus the ground spice, since the ground spice loses a lot of flavor.<\/p>\n<p>A study published in the journal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5557534\/\"><em>Lipids in Health and Disease <\/em><\/a>&nbsp;found that cardamom played a beneficial role in promoting metabolic health, glucose intolerance, and oxidative stress.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>4. Turmeric<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Popularly used in South Asian cooking, as well as in trendy (and delicious!) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/search?search=Golden%2BMilk\">Golden Milk<\/a> recipes, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/search?search=turmeric\">turmeric<\/a>&nbsp;has been used for centuries as a medicinal herb to promote healing from a host of illnesses. Martin describes it as \u201ca powerful antioxidant that not only neutralizes free radicals (disease-causing compounds found in the environment, pollutants, and smoke) but also aids and boosts the body&#8217;s own enzymatic responses to free radicals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s also particularly helpful at keeping your brain firing on all cylinders, notes Mike Dow, Psy.D., Ph.D., author of the upcoming book,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Heal-Your-Drained-Brain-Naturally\/dp\/1401952100\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1509647791&amp;sr=8-1&amp;keywords=heal+your+drained+brain\"><em>Heal Your Drained Brain<\/em><\/a>&nbsp;(February 2018). \u201cThe effects of this miracle spice are quite evident in rural India, where fewer than one percent of seniors aged 65 and over have Alzheimer\u2019s disease, compared to about 13 percent in the United States,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTurmeric will make [your mind] feel better, too,\u201d says Dow, \u201cpossibly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17617388\">increasing serotonin in the brain<\/a>.\u201d Additionally, it can address more day-to-day health concerns, as the main ingredient in turmeric, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/search?search=curcumin\"> curcumin<\/a>, is a strong antioxidant.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>5. Rosemary<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/search?search=Rosemary\">Rosemary<\/a> is fragrant and its scent alone may <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17291597\">stimulate the brain to improve alertness<\/a>,&#8221;&nbsp;says Dr. Brown. You can also derive long-term benefits from the delicious herb, because the carnosic acid in rosemary may improve cognitive function, notes Dow.
