For one thing, the\u00a0curcumin\u00a0in turmeric is a strong\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/blog\/2017\/03\/07\/antioxidants-good-for-you\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">antioxidant<\/a>. But there is one catch:\u00a0When it comes to exercise, inflammation can actually be good. While chronic inflammation is linked to a variety of health issues, post-exercise inflammation is what\u2019s responsible for your progress and results, says<a href=\"https:\/\/protect-us.mimecast.com\/s\/1Va6CBBnm6HNKj3hPkng_\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Albert Matheny<\/a>, M.S., R.D., C.S.C.S., co-founder of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/protect-us.mimecast.com\/s\/Yxf6CDk0o8UZAqQuLuDPO\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SoHo Strength Lab<\/a>. When you damage your muscles and other tissues during exercise, your immune system responds to repair that damage and build your muscles back stronger and more efficient than they were before\u2014so if you want to adapt and see results, you need <em>some<\/em> inflammation.<\/p>\n<p>That said, while research on curcumin and exercise is still developing, there is some evidence for its potential benefits. For example, one <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25795285\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>European Journal of Clinical Physiology<\/em><\/a> study found that supplementing with a high dose of curcumin (2.5 grams twice daily) reduced symptoms of post-workout delayed onset muscle soreness.<\/p>\n<p>Curcumin can also come in handy when you just don\u2019t have time to recover\u2014say, if you\u2019re competing in a sport two days in a row or need to make it through a race. One <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/28344463\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Journal of Sports Science & Medicine<\/em><\/a> study suggests that curcumin may help minimize muscle damage between competitions when recovery periods are short.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond soreness and recovery time, curcumin may also benefit active people with certain conditions. For instance, one study published in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19678780\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine<\/em><\/a> found that daily turmeric extract supplementation improved pain and mobility following physical activity in those with joint issues. (And it\u2019s not the only <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24672232\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a> to come to such a conclusion.)<\/p>\n<p>Want to give turmeric a try? Matheny likes to incorporate the spice into whole foods when possible (curried chicken and potatoes after leg day, anyone?), but suggests trying a curcumin supplement\u2014about 1,000 milligrams once a day\u2014after extra-tough workouts or when you need to recover quickly. After all, turmeric supplements often contain much higher concentrations of curcumin, plus\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/blog\/2017\/11\/23\/turmeric-black-pepper-benefits\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">black pepper<\/a>,\u00a0which significantly boosts curcumin\u2019s absorption.
