That\u2019s not what we\u2019re talking about here.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/chia\/N-8bg\" target=\"_blank\">Chia<\/a>\u2014itty-bitty seeds that are typically black, goldish, or gray\u2014were apparently eaten by the <a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/ency\/patientinstructions\/000727.htm\" target=\"_blank\">ancient Aztecs<\/a>, and have become a favorite superfood today. They&#8217;re so popular, in fact, that we\u2019ve seen four-pound bags of them being sold at wholesale stores.<\/p>\n<p>The nutritional stats of these little guys live up to the hype: Just two tablespoons of <a href=\"https:\/\/ndb.nal.usda.gov\/ndb\/foods\/show\/76390?man=&amp;lfacet=&amp;count=&amp;max=&amp;qlookup=&amp;offset=&amp;sort=&amp;format=Abridged&amp;reportfmt=other&amp;rptfrm=&amp;ndbno=&amp;nutrient1=&amp;nutrient2=&amp;nutrient3=&amp;subset=&amp;totCount=&amp;measureby=&amp;Q99559=2&amp;Qv=1&amp;Q99559=1&amp;Qv=1\" target=\"_blank\">chia seeds<\/a> contain six grams of fiber and four grams of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/protein\/N-8ea\" target=\"_blank\">protein<\/a>. They also pack between 14 and 18 percent of your daily <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/calcium\/N-8dl\" target=\"_blank\">calcium<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/iron\/N-8ds\" target=\"_blank\">iron<\/a>, and magnesium needs, says the <a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/ency\/patientinstructions\/000727.htm\" target=\"_blank\">National Institute of Health<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlus, chia seeds contain <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/omega-fatty-acids\/N-8az\" target=\"_blank\">omega-3s<\/a>, an essential fatty acid we can only get from food, which supports our brains, and immune and digestive systems,\u201d says Jaclyn Jacobsen, R.D., in-house dietitian for The Vitamin Shoppe.<\/p>\n<p>Chia seeds are an easy addition to any smoothie or bowl of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/p\/organic-rolled-oats-32-oz-powder\/brl1015\" target=\"_blank\">oatmeal<\/a>, but the tiny powerhouses can be used in so many other ways, too.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<h3><strong>Egg Substitute<\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Vegans and egg-o-phobes (oh yes, they exist) often use ground <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/p\/spectrum-naturals-essential-flaxseed-ground-organic-14-oz-granules\/sa-1126\" target=\"_blank\">flax seeds<\/a> to make egg substitutes when baking. To make a \u2018chia egg,\u2019 mix 1 tablespoon chia seeds with 3 tablespoons water and let sit for 20 minutes. The outer layer of chia seeds absorbs water, swelling to form a gel.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li>\n<h3><strong>Breading<\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Mix ground chia seeds with almond flower to make a gluten-free breading for your favorite chicken or fish dishes. of cinnamon, and 2 pipettes of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/p\/stevia-4-oz\/vs-2493\" target=\"_blank\">plnt liquid stevia<\/a>. Refrigerate for 20 minutes and you\u2019ve got a fruit spread without the added sugar. \u201cChia jam is nice and thick, and spreads really well,\u201d says Jacobsen.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"6\">\n<li>\n<h3><strong>Thickening Agent<\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Swap chia seeds in for corn starch or other thickening agents in recipes. Add chia seeds gradually to soups or gravies until you reach the desired thickness.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"7\">\n<li>\n<h3><strong>Chia Pancakes Or Waffles<\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Mix chia
