{"id":17970,"date":"2018-03-21T11:12:09","date_gmt":"2018-03-21T15:12:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/whatsgood.vitaminshoppe.com\/?p=17970"},"modified":"2018-03-30T13:12:43","modified_gmt":"2018-03-30T17:12:43","slug":"high-potency-supplements","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/blog\/high-potency-supplements\/","title":{"rendered":"Are Your Supplements Potent Enough?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Shopping for supplements can be a daunting experience, to say the least<em>.<\/em> Between the endless assortment of brands and science-y-sounding language splashed across labels, buying something as seemingly simple as a multivitamin often feels like a big decision.<\/p>\n<p>To add to the confusion, many different types of products are now being promoted as \u2018high-potency.\u2019 Huh?<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t worry, we did the research so you don\u2019t have to. Here, we break down what \u2018high-potency\u2019 actually means, and how to tell if it\u2019s right for you.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Defining High-Potency<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/RegulatoryInformation\/Guidances\/ucm063064.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FDA<\/a>, vitamins or minerals that present at 100 percent or more of the <a href=\"https:\/\/ods.od.nih.gov\/Health_Information\/Dietary_Reference_Intakes.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reference daily intake<\/a>\u00a0(a.k.a. \u2018RDI,\u2019 the measurements used to calculate appropriate daily intake of a nutrient) per serving can be labeled \u2018high-potency.\u2019 So if you\u2019re reaching for a high-potency <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/vitamin-c\/N-cp99i1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">vitamin C supplement<\/a>, one serving will pack enough to hit the RDI target for adults (which is 75 milligrams for women and 90 milligrams for men), or more.<\/p>\n<p>When there are multiple ingredients in a supplement (like in your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/multivitamins\/N-cp99ig\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">multivitamin<\/a>), at least two-thirds of them must offer 100 percent or more of the RDI in order for that supplement to be labeled \u2018high-potency.\u2019 You\u2019ll have to check the Supplement Facts labels on multi-ingredient high-potency supps to determine which of its ingredients are present in these high levels.<\/p>\n<p>When we\u2019re not talking about vitamins and minerals, though, things get a little hairier, since the definition of \u2018high-potency\u2019 isn\u2019t officially defined for other supplements, says naturopathic physician <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vitalhealthnd.com\/about-the-dr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chant\u00e9 Wiegand<\/a>, N.D, director of education at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesynergycompany.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Synergy Company<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The term can still indicate how powerful a punch a supplement packs, but it\u2019s not backed by the FDA. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/probiotics\/N-cp99jn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Probiotics<\/a>, for example, are often found in doses of five to 10 billion live organisms (or CFUs, \u2018colony-forming units\u2019)\u2014so supplements that contain more than 100 billion are often labeled \u2018high-potency.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Same goes for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/herbs-natural-remedies\/N-cp99lv\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">herbal supplements<\/a>, such as licorice. When these natural products are made into extracts and concentrated (or \u2018standardized\u2019) to contain larger amounts of their beneficial compound, they might be labeled \u2018high-potency\u2019\u2014but again, there\u2019s no official definition here. Take <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/turmeric\/N-cp99m2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">turmeric<\/a>, for example: \u201cThere is a huge difference between the turmeric spice, the ground turmeric root that you can buy at the grocery store, and an extract,\u201d says Wiegand. While you\u2019d need to eat a tablespoon of actual turmeric spice to get about 130 milligrams of curcuminoids (the compounds responsible for turmeric\u2019s benefits), a single capsule of a standardized extract might contain over 200 milligrams. So turmeric spice would be considered low-potency, while the extract supplement would be considered high-potency, Wiegand says.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Who Can Benefit From High-Potency Supplements<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Not all health and nutrition experts agree on the necessity of high-potency supps, but Wiegand sees them as beneficial. \u201cThe RDIs vitamins and minerals are considered quite modest in most cases\u2014and many in the nutrition world consider these levels the minimum to prevent deficiency, not to support optimal health,\u201d says Wiegand. Experts in this school of thought suggest most people can benefit from high-potency doses of vitamins and minerals. \u201cFor example, the RDI for vitamin C is 90 milligrams, but vitamin C is a beneficial, powerful <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/antioxidants\/N-cp99id\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">antioxidant<\/a>, and at least 200 milligrams\u2014or even more\u2014a day is widely recommended,\u201d Wiegand says. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/vitamin-b\/N-cp99i0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">B vitamins<\/a> are a similar story: \u201cThe RDIs for B vitamins are tiny\u2014and these vitamins are rapidly depleted by stress, poor diet, genetic issues, and more,\u201d she adds.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Related: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/blog\/2017\/10\/06\/b-vitamin-guide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Get Your B Vitamins Straight: A Guide To What\u2019s What<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>People with certain health issues may also have specific high-potency vitamin needs. One example: an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/blog\/2017\/12\/06\/autoimmune-diseases\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">autoimmune disease<\/a> called pernicious anemia, which affects <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/vitamin-b\/N-cp99i0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">vitamin B12<\/a> absorption. \u201cFor these folks, high-dose vitamin B12 is necessary,\u201d says Wiegand.<\/p>\n<!-- Shortcode [rr-products] does not match the conditions -->\n<p>Others who might benefit from taking high-potency supplements:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>People with gastrointestinal issues, who may have trouble absorbing nutrients.<\/li>\n<li>Strict vegans, who have a hard time getting enough B12 (which is found in animal foods).<\/li>\n<li>Those with chronic GI disorders that impact nutrient digestion and absorption.<\/li>\n<li>Women who are pregnant or planning to get pregnant should take high-dose <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/vitamin-b\/N-cp99i0\">folic acid.<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Those who\u2019ve just finished a round of antibiotics should take a high-potency probiotic to help rebuild the community of good bacteria in their gut.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Just like you\u2019d use a high-potency probiotic when faced with a major gut dilemma, you might also consider high-potency herbal supplements when you want to benefit <em>right away.<\/em> \u201c (Since high-dose herbal products can interact with other drugs and have possible <a href=\"https:\/\/www.knowyourback.org\/KnowYourBack\/Treatments\/AlternativeMedicine\/HerbalSupplements\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">side effects<\/a> long-term, think of them more as situational superheroes than everyday staples.)<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Who Should Stay Away From High-Potency Supps<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>While high-potency supplements can be beneficial in certain cases, more isn\u2019t <em>always<\/em> better. For example, since exceeding the upper limit of vitamin A can lead to <a href=\"https:\/\/ods.od.nih.gov\/factsheets\/VitaminA-HealthProfessional\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">birth defects<\/a>, it\u2019s not recommended that pregnant women take high doses, says Wiegand.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, if your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/vitamin-d\/N-cp99i2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">vitamin D<\/a> levels are already high enough, a high-potency supplement could be problematic, just as high-potency <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/letter-vitamins\/N-cp99hy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">vitamin K<\/a> could be an issue if you take blood-thinners. Even high-potency probiotics can do more harm than good if you have a common condition called small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), in which you have too many bacteria festering in the wrong place.<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, your unique circumstances and health determine whether high-potency supplements (and which ones) are right for you, so talk to your doctor or a dietitian before updating your supplement regimen.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Shopping for supplements can be a daunting experience, to say the least.
