Not only is this social media misinformation confusing, but it can keep you from being your healthiest self.<\/p>\n<p>To set the record straight, I asked some of my expert pals to bust the most frustrating food-related falsities out there. Keep these myths in mind the next time you\u2019re scrolling through the social media static.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Myth #1: You Should Only Shop The Perimeter Of The Grocery Store<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Food shopping can be so tricky that I wrote an entire <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Read-Before-You-Eat-Taking\/dp\/1979739722\/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1513656967&sr=1-1&keywords=read+it+before+you+eat+it\">book<\/a> on it! The perimeter of the grocery store may house many of the whole foods we\u2019re told to fill our diets with\u2014like produce (my favorite section), animal proteins (like poultry and meat), and refrigerated dairy\u2014but that doesn\u2019t mean the middle aisles don\u2019t have healthy foods to offer! Soda, cookies, and chips aside, those center aisles contain plant foods like beans, whole grains, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/nuts-trail-mix\/N-cp99lk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">nuts<\/a>, which are nutritious, versatile, affordable, and easy to store. These ingredients can help you create an endless number of delicious, nutritious meals and snacks, like bean-filled soups and salads, homemade <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/nuts-trail-mix\/N-cp99lk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trail mix<\/a>, and more.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Myth<\/strong> <strong>#2: Foods With More Than Five Ingredients Aren\u2019t Healthy<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>While long ingredient lists that include sugar and its aliases, preservatives, and artificial flavors and colors should be questioned and perhaps avoided, not all multi-ingredient foods are unhealthy. \u00a0It\u2019s the <em>quality<\/em> of a food\u2019s ingredients\u2014not the quantity\u2014that matters most. If a product\u2019s ingredients are whole foods you\u2019d already stock your kitchen with\u2014like whole grains, fruits, veggies, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/oils-spices\/N-cp99km\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">spices<\/a>\u2014then it\u2019s probably an okay choice. (Consider this: My favorite bread, Dave\u2019s Killer Bread, contains 32 organic ingredients, 21 of which are whole grains and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/seeds\/N-cp99l6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">seeds<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Myth #3:<\/strong> <strong>Avoid Nuts; They\u2019re High In Fat<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>It\u2019s true, nuts are mostly fat and fat is more calorie-dense than carbs or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/protein\/N-cp99j4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">protein<\/a>\u2014but the majority of the fat in nuts is healthy unsaturated fat, which keeps us feeling full, and supports healthy blood sugar and a healthy heart. Plus, nuts are naturally packed with protein, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/fiber\/N-cp99ju\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fiber<\/a>, and many other nutrients (like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/minerals\/N-cp99i4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">minerals<\/a>!), says <a href=\"http:\/\/www.patriciabannan.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Patricia Bannan<\/a>, M.S., R.D.N., author of <em>Eat Right When Time is Tight<\/em>. A serving of nuts (about a handful or two) is a great snack choice and can actually support weight loss by keeping you satisfied and making you less likely to munch on less valuable foods.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Myth #4: Gluten-Free Foods Are Better For You<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Newsflash: Donuts are donuts! Plenty of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/blog\/2017\/03\/17\/gluten-free\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">gluten-free<\/a> foods out there are highly-processed and low in nutritional value. That \u2018gluten-free\u2019 label doesn\u2019t say anything about how much protein, fat, fiber, sugar, or calories the product contains, says Dawn Jackson Blatner, R.D.N., author of <em>The Superfood Swap<\/em>. And unless you have a condition like celiac disease, your health doesn\u2019t depend on avoiding gluten, anyway. So if you\u2019re reaching for those gluten-free donuts because you think they\u2019re somehow better, think again.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Related: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/blog\/2017\/03\/17\/gluten-free\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>What Going Gluten-Free Can And Can\u2019t Do For Your Health<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Myth #5<\/strong>: <strong>Carbs Make You Fat<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Along with protein and fat, carbohydrates are an essential macronutrient, which means they\u2019re essential for our bodies\u2019 proper function. In fact, they\u2019re broken down into glucose, which is our primary source of fuel! Because our bodies prefer to use carbs for energy, we actually resist storing them as body fat, says Kara Lydon, R.D., L.D.N., R.Y.T., <a href=\"https:\/\/karalydon.com\/coaching\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Certified Intuitive Eating Counselor<\/a>. When we don\u2019t eat enough carbs, our bodies become desperate for glucose, and may even start to break down the protein found in our muscles to turn into glucose, which is bad news for our muscles, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/blog\/2017\/01\/17\/metabolism-myths\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">metabolism<\/a>, and fitness.<\/p>\n<p>Sure, regularly chow down on big portions of refined carbs (think bagels, sub sandwiches, and pasta) and you\u2019re likely going to pack on the pounds. However, stick to whole grains, starchy vegetables, and fruit\u2014and eat your carbs alongside fat and protein\u2014and you\u2019ve got yourself a balanced, waistline-friendly diet.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Myth #6: Coffee Is A Bad Habit, Not A Health Food<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>We often assume that if something feels good, it must be bad for us\u2014and while that may be true with highly-processed, addictive foods, it\u2019s not the case with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/coffee-tea\/N-cp99ln\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">coffee<\/a>. While some people who are caffeine-sensitive may experience shakiness, upset stomach, or sleeplessness after drinking coffee, studies have suggested that it can protect against Parkinson\u2019s disease, type 2 diabetes, cirrhosis of the liver, and gout, so go ahead and enjoy that morning (or early afternoon) brew.<\/p>\n<!-- Shortcode [rr-products] does not match the conditions -->\n<h3><strong>Myth #7: White Foods Aren\u2019t Nutritious<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>When we talk about the importance of \u2018eating the rainbow,\u2019 white tends to get left out\u2014even though there are plenty of white-colored foods out there that deserve a place on your plate. Cauliflower, potatoes, white beans, some mushrooms, and garlic are all white in color and packed with healthy nutrients like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/potassium\/N-cp99i8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">potassium<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/vitamin-c\/N-cp99i1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">vitamin C<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/vitamin-b\/N-cp99i0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">B vitamins<\/a>, and fiber, says <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kerigansny.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Keri Gans<\/a>, R.D.N., author of <em>The Small Change Diet<\/em>. Meanwhile, dairy foods like milk, yogurt, and cottage cheese provide <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/calcium\/N-cp99i5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">calcium<\/a> and protein. Instead of judging a food by its color, check the Nutrition Facts to see whether it provides nutritional value, like protein, fiber, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/letter-vitamins\/N-cp99hy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">vitamins<\/a>, and minerals. The white foods that won\u2019t make the cut: processed foods like white bread, white rice, and pastries.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Myth #8: Organic Is The Only Way To Go<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>There are plenty of reasons people choose to switch to organic foods, like the fact that they don\u2019t contain certain man-made pesticides or fertilizers and are non-GMO. But that doesn\u2019t mean your conventionally-grown produce doesn\u2019t offer nutritional value. In fact, research has found that, nutritionally speaking, organic foods have little extra to offer than conventionally-grown foods, says Alissa Rumsey M,S., R.D., founder of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alissarumsey.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Alissa Rumsey Nutrition and Wellness<\/a>. (The exceptions: Animal products like chicken, milk, beef, and eggs, whose organic versions have been shown to contain more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/omegas\/N-cp99ib\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">omega-3<\/a> fats.) Since going green can cost more green, stick to produce that\u2019s in-season, keep an eye on sales, and shop the store brand when you want to buy organic.
