Here\u2019s the truth about eight of our favorites.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>1. Chicken Soup Helps You Get Better When You\u2019re Sick<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Verdict: TRUE-ISH<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While no scientific human studies have ever identified chicken soup as an effective cold remedy, \u00a0\u201cIt can be a nutrient powerhouse, delivering important <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/letter-vitamins\/N-cp99hy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">vitamins<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/minerals\/N-cp99i4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">minerals<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/antioxidants\/N-cp99id\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">antioxidants<\/a> to your body that can help boost your immunity,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/shawsimpleswaps.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Elizabeth Ann Shaw<\/a>, M.S., R.D.N., C.L.T., C.P.T. Carrots and onions, in particular, provide carotenoids (a type of antioxidant that can support healthy aging and eye health) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/fiber\/N-cp99ju\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">prebiotic fiber<\/a> (which acts as food for the healthy bacteria in your gut), respectively.<\/p>\n<!-- Shortcode [rr-products] does not match the conditions -->\n<p>Plus, nutrition aside, chicken soup can just be plain old comforting\u2014and that\u2019s especially important when your body is in a state of stress, like when you\u2019re not feeling well, says Shaw. So while it may not be a miracle-worker, it\u2019s certainly worth sipping on.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>2. You\u2019ll Catch A Cold From Going Outside With Wet Hair<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Verdict: FALSE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe very act of walking out the door with wet hair won\u2019t in itself cause you to develop a cold,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.northwell.edu\/find-care\/find-a-doctor\/emergency-medicine\/dr-robert-glatter-md-11353725\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Robert Glatter<\/a>, M.D., assistant professor of emergency medicine at Northwell Health. \u201cYou have to be exposed to the specific virus in order to develop an illness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That said, exposure to extremely cold weather does put stress on the body, which can hinder your immune function and increase your chances of getting sick when you <em>are<\/em> exposed to a bug. Plus, \u201ccertain respiratory viruses thrive in dry cold temperatures, so you have a greater chance of being exposed in that environment,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, your best bet at preventing sickness is washing your hands (for at least 20 seconds!) frequently and coughing or sneezing into your elbow or a tissue\u2014especially during cold season.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>3. Sugar And Dairy Give You Acne<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Verdict: TRUE-ISH<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While factors like hormones, bacteria, and excess sebum, are typically the main drivers of acne, there\u2019s no denying that <em>some<\/em> connection exists between our diet and our skin, according to a review published in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2836431\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Dermatoendocrinology<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p>That connection is just\u2026murky. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2836431\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Preliminary research<\/a> suggests a link between eating a high-glycemic (think refined carbs and sugar) diet and prevalence of acne, and some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/15692464\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">studies<\/a> suggest the hormones in milk can influence acne, but the findings are limited, at best.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Related: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/blog\/2017\/09\/18\/lactose-intolerance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Raise Your Hand If You Have Trouble Digesting Dairy<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>If you have sensitive, oily skin, though, experts still recommend you proceed with caution. \u201cMilk contains precursors to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/blog\/2017\/04\/05\/low-testosterone\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">testosterone<\/a> and other androgens [male sex hormones], which influence the hormone receptors in the skin to turn on the process that causes acne,\u201d says board-certified dermatologist and founder of customized skincare company\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/curology.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Curology<\/a>, David Lortscher, M.D.\u00a0\u201cDairy and high-glycemic foods send insulin levels sky-high and trigger more oil production in the sebaceous glands,\u201d he explains.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re having trouble with acne and drink more than three servings of milk (skim seems to be more of an issue, though <em>why<\/em> isn\u2019t clear) per week, consider eliminating dairy for at least a few weeks to see how your skin reacts, says Lortscher. The same goes for any type of food: If you notice a trend of breaking out the day after eating it, consider cutting it out.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>4. If You Eat Fruit Seeds, They\u2019ll Grow in Your Stomach<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Verdict: REALLY?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As you probably guessed, this one is totally bogus. \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/seeds\/N-cp99l6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Seeds<\/a> need the right environment to germinate and grow, and the highly-acidic stomach isn\u2019t it,\u201d says <a href=\"http:\/\/www.maggiemoon.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Maggie Moon<\/a>, M.S., R.D.<a href=\"http:\/\/www.maggiemoon.com\/\">,<\/a> and author of <em>The MIND Diet<\/em>. Swallow a raw seed whole and it\u2019ll just pass through your system pretty-much undigested.<\/p>\n<p>That said, you <em>should<\/em> chew the seeds in some fruits and veggies\u2014like pumpkin or watermelon seeds, for example. In fact, they make for a portable, nutritious snack! \u201cEach one-ounce serving of watermelon seeds packs a surprisingly high eight to 10 grams of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/protein\/N-cp99j4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">protein<\/a> and also provides <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/iron\/N-cp99i7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">iron<\/a>,\u201d Moon says.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>5. Cure A Hangover With Hair Of The Dog<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Verdict: FALSE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re not going to say you can\u2019t enjoy a brunch-time Bloody Mary after a night out, but don\u2019t expect it to benefit your body in any way. The phrase \u2018hair of the dog\u2019 is short for \u2018hair of the dog that bit you,\u2019 and it comes from an <a href=\"https:\/\/en.oxforddictionaries.com\/explore\/what-is-the-origin-of-the-phrase-hair-of-the-dog\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">old superstition<\/a> that you could cure yourself of rabies by taking a potion made with the hair of the rabid dog that bit you. Ya know, super-scientific.<\/p>\n<p>In reality, trying to cure a hangover with more alcohol is like trying to lose weight by eating more junk food. \u201cWhen you\u2019re hungover, your body is in a state of dehydration and elevated inflammation, so your best bet is to stick with water and eat antioxidant-rich foods like sweet potatoes, blueberries, black beans, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/herbal-teas\/N-cp99me\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tea<\/a>, and sorghum,\u201d Moon says.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>6. \u2018Feed A Cold, Starve A Fever\u2019<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Verdict: FALSE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile it \u200bis \u200bcommon to lose \u200byour appetite when \u200byou \u200bhave\u200b a fever\u200b, there is no need to starve yourself,\u201d says<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/draxe.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr.\u00a0Josh\u00a0Axe<\/a>, D.N.M., C.N.S., D.C., founder of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ancientnutrition.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ancient Nutrition<\/a>. Regardless of whether you have a cold or a fever, you want to eat nutrient-rich food\u200bs to\u200b\u200b provide your body with the fuel it needs to recover. Focus on colorful fruits and vegetables\u2014especially <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/vitamin-c\/N-cp99i1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">vitamin C<\/a>-packed foods like kiwi and carrots\u2014and even chicken soup.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>7. Cracking Your Knuckles Will Give You Arthritis <\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Verdict: FALSE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cKnuckle cracking has gotten a bad rap throughout the years, but claims about it causing arthritis don\u2019t seem to have any scientific backing,\u201d says Axe. In fact, a 2011 study published in the <em>\u200b\u200b<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21383216\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Journal of American Board of Family Medicine<\/em><\/a> found that rates of arthritis were no higher in people who frequently cracked their knuckles than in those who did not crack their knuckles.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s what happens when you crack: The sudden change in how your joints are positioned releases gases (nitrogen, oxygen and carbon dioxide) that are dissolved in your joint fluid, causing a popping or cracking sound, explains Axe. That\u2019s why you can only get a particular knuckle to crack every so often; those released gasses have to dissolve back into your joint fluid. Interesting but not harmful.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>8.
