Whether you\u2019re dealing with a one-off food hangover after a night of epic eating, or haven\u2019t been able to button your pants for the past few weeks, the stomach bloat struggle is real.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnything from excess sugar or salt, to greasy foods, artificial ingredients, or chewing gum can lead to feelings of [abdominal] bloating,\u201d says Keri Glassman, M.S., R.D., creator of <a href=\"http:\/\/nutritiouslife.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Nutritious Life<\/a>. Even cruciferous veggies like cauliflower and Brussels sprouts can do you in.<\/p>\n<p>Gassiness can lead to bloating, though often we feel bloated because our bodies are holding onto more water than usual, says Glassman. When we eat carbs or sugar, our bodies break it down into molecules called glycogen, which we store in our muscles and use for energy, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncsf.org\/enew\/articles\/articles-highprotiendiets.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">National Council on Strength and Fitness<\/a>. In order to store this glycogen, we also need to store water\u2014about two grams of it per gram of glycogen. Luckily, there are a several things you can do to help flush that excess H20, gas, and discomfort away.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<h3><strong>Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate<\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Wait, <em>more <\/em>water? Yep, upping your agua intake can actually help you flatten out when you feel like a human blob. \u201cDrinking water can help your body flush out excess water it\u2019s holding onto,\u201d says Glassman.\u00a0Just stay away from bubbles, which can trap extra air in your stomach and make you feel super full.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li>\n<h3><strong>Be Wary Of Dairy<\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Since many of us produce less of the enzyme lactase that helps us digest dairy as we age, dairy can be another common culprit of gas, bloating, and other tummy troubles. Cut out dairy for a few days (we\u2019ll miss you, string cheese) and see how you feel, Glassman suggests.<\/p>\n<p>If you can handle dairy no problem, incorporate a serving of yogurt into your day. The bacteria in yogurt, called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/probiotics\/N-8h7\" target=\"_blank\">probiotics<\/a>, can actually promote a healthy gut, she explains. Nixing processed carbs the day after an indulgent meal can help reduce the sensation of being a walking, talking, bouncy house as you use all that glycogen and H20 you\u2019ve stashed away, says Glassman. Instead, focus on getting your carbs from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/fiber\/N-8hl\" target=\"_blank\">fiber<\/a>-filled sources like root veggies or oats.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li>\n<h3><strong>Nom On These MVP Veggies<\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>While there\u2019s not a ton of research about the effectiveness of natural substances used as diuretics, a few of our favorite healthy foods have been said to flush extra water from our bodies. \u201cCelery and fennel are known as natural diuretics,\u201d says Glassman. (Diuretics like water pills make our kidneys produce more urine, which shuttles water and sodium out of the body, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmedhealth\/PMHT0025451\/\" target=\"_blank\">U.S. National Library of Medicine<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>In addition, asparagus is loaded with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/b\/golive\/N-cp98kl\" target=\"_blank\">prebiotic<\/a> fiber, which can help a sluggish gut get back to normal, says Glassman. Prebiotic fiber is a non-digestible substance found in whole foods that can promote probiotic (function in your gut, says the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eatright.org\/resource\/food\/vitamins-and-supplements\/nutrient-rich-foods\/prebiotics-and-probiotics-the-dynamic-duo\" target=\"_blank\">Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics<\/a>.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"5\">\n<li>\n<h3><strong>Choose Fruit Wisely<\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Some types of fruit contain a lot more sugar than others, and don\u2019t sit well in your stomach, says Glassman. \u201cBerries, oranges, and grapefruit are all flat belly-friendly fruits because they digest easily and are lower in sugar,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, pineapple\u2014which is higher in sugar\u2014contains an enzyme called bromelain that helps digest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/protein\/N-8ea\" target=\"_blank\">protein<\/a>, says the <a href=\"http:\/\/umm.edu\/health\/medical\/altmed\/supplement\/bromelain\" target=\"_blank\">University of Maryland Medical Center<\/a>. Eating pineapple may promote better digestion and ease some of the GI discomfort that can go along with bloating, says Glassman.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/enzymes\/N-8hh\" target=\"_blank\">Maybe you\u2019ve got your probiotics covered, but what about your enzymes?<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<ol start=\"6\">\n<li>\n<h3><strong>Sip On These<\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Grab your mug and get steeping: Certain teas may help you bounce back from a food binge. \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/search?search=peppermint%2Btea\" target=\"_blank\">Peppermint<\/a> is a great natural remedy for indigestion and other stomach troubles,\u201d says Glassman. It has a relaxing effect on the muscles of your GI system, and can promote better digestion and relieve gas buildup, says the <a href=\"http:\/\/umm.edu\/health\/medical\/altmed\/herb\/peppermint\" target=\"_blank\">UMMC<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/search?search=dandelion%2Btea\" target=\"_blank\">Dandelion<\/a>, which contains vitamins and minerals like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/vitamin-d\/N-88o\" target=\"_blank\">vitamin D<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/potassium\/N-8e3\" target=\"_blank\">potassium<\/a>, may also help you release water weight.
