{"id":18320,"date":"2018-04-19T12:30:08","date_gmt":"2018-04-19T16:30:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/whatsgood.vitaminshoppe.com\/?p=18320"},"modified":"2018-04-27T14:34:08","modified_gmt":"2018-04-27T18:34:08","slug":"is-coffee-carcinogenic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/blog\/is-coffee-carcinogenic\/","title":{"rendered":"About That Whole \u2018Coffee Causes Cancer\u2019 Thing&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2018\/03\/30\/health\/coffee-cancer-court-decision-warning-label-california\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recent preliminary decision in California court<\/a>\u00a0determined that coffee sellers will now have to warn customers about the potentially carcinogenic properties of their morning java\u2014and people are (understandably) bugging out.<\/p>\n<p>Almost a decade ago, a nonprofit called the Council for Education and Research on Toxics sued 19 coffee sellers, including Starbucks, for &#8220;failing to provide warnings to consumers that the coffee sold contained high levels of acrylamide, a toxic and carcinogenic chemical.&#8221; (They filed another complaint against an additional 40-plus defendants less than a month later.)<\/p>\n<p>The nonprofit claimed that coffee sellers were violating a 1986 law known as <a href=\"https:\/\/oehha.ca.gov\/proposition-65\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Proposition 65<\/a>, which requires the state of California to maintain a list of harmful chemicals &#8220;known to cause cancer and reproductive toxicity&#8221; and for businesses to inform citizens of any exposure to those chemicals. The chemical acrylamide, which is produced in a chemical reaction called the Maillard reaction that occurs between the sugar and asparagine when coffee beans are roasted, has been on California\u2019s list of harmful chemicals since 1990.<\/p>\n<p>Two years ago, the case went to trial to determine whether the amount of acrylamide in coffee was significant enough to warrant our favorite coffee sellers having to warn people about it. After much back-and-forth, the court ruled that, yes, a cup of Joe sold in the state of California <em>should<\/em> be labeled as possibly carcinogenic.<\/p>\n<p>But does this really mean your favorite brewed beverage can cause cancer? Put simply: You don\u2019t need to worry, says <a href=\"http:\/\/drtaylorwallace.com\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr. Taylor C. Wallace<\/a>, Ph.D., C.F.S., F.A.C.N., disease prevention researcher and founder of nutrition consulting firm Think Healthy Group. \u201cYou have to remember that there is always a threshold of toxicological concern, which California isn\u2019t really taking into consideration,\u201d he says. \u201cAcrylamide has been suggested to increase cancer, but not at levels present in a few cups of coffee,\u201d he says\u2014even if you\u2019re sipping on a few brews most days.<\/p>\n<p>The concern about acrylamide stems from rodent studies, which have shown that extremely high doses of the chemical\u2014not the amount the average human coffee-drinker would ingest on a regular basis\u2014increases cancer risk. \u201cRodent studies are helpful in identifying potential mechanisms when validated models are used, but many times do not translate to humans since they have a\u00a0different\u00a0set of genetics,\u201d Wallace says. In other words, while animal studies are a good scientific starting point, they don\u2019t necessarily apply or translate directly to human health, and shouldn\u2019t send us running from coffee in fear.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re still concerned, consider a similar case: A few decades back, saccharin, an artificial sweetener often found in sweetener packets and diet beverages like soda, was called into question after <a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/annonc\/article\/15\/10\/1460\/170200\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">animal research<\/a> suggested it could be carcinogenic. \u201cBut the dose needed to get that effect would have been something like 20,000 diet beverages per day for 20 years,\u201d Wallace says. \u201cDose matters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Not to mention, coffee also contains many health-promoting bioactive compounds, such as the antioxidant chlorogenic acid, which has been associated with a lower risk of certain cancers. \u201cYou can\u2019t look at each compound in isolation,\u201d he says. This case just highlights the fact that science and the legal system don\u2019t always intersect well.<\/p>\n<!-- Shortcode [rr-products] does not match the conditions -->\n<p>So for now, keep on drinking your coffee. \u201cThere is a long history of safe use and a ton of safety data in the scientific literature,\u201d Wallace says. Some research even suggests a connection between coffee and long-term health benefits, like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3824984\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reduced risk of age-related cognitive decline<\/a>. Just remember that these health benefits are seen at a consumption level of about two cups of java per day.<\/p>\n<p>To keep your daily coffee run as beneficial to your health as possible, the best thing you can do is limit the amount of sugar and saturated fat you add to your brew, since high calorie and sugar consumption are associated with weight gain, which can be a big driver of cancer, says Wallace.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Related: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/blog\/2018\/01\/16\/ways-sugar-affects-health\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>5 Scary Ways Eating Too Much Sugar Can Mess With Your Health<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And if you\u2019re concerned about acrylamide, you&#8217;re better off focusing your effort on avoiding foods like baked goods, processed snacks, and potato chips, which also contain acrylamide\u2014in addition to offering zero nutrition, Wallace says.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A\u00a0recent preliminary decision in California court\u00a0determined that coffee sellers will now have to warn customers about the potentially carcinogenic properties of their morning java\u2014and people are (understandably) bugging out.
