It takes a good half hour before I can get up and move around as normal, and even longer until I feel like I\u2019m oiled up enough\u2014yanked and pulled and stretched out\u2014to be a human being.<\/p>\n<p>I have an autoimmune disease called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arthritis.org\/about-arthritis\/types\/ankylosing-spondylitis\/\">Ankylosing Spondylitis<\/a> that causes super-duper stiff joints (commonly referred to as arthritis). I\u2019m not alone\u2014an estimated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arthritis.org\/about-arthritis\/understanding-arthritis\/arthritis-statistics-facts.php\">54 million Americans<\/a>\u00a0live with daily joint pain or joint disease. That\u2019s a lot of people feeling like me, all of us aching for some sort of respite from feeling creaky, cracky, and crooked.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, successfully treating the various conditions that affect the joints is like finding your way out of a particularly tricky maze. I can\u2019t say I\u2019ve gotten out quite yet, but I\u2019m closer than before.<\/p>\n<p>I started by talking to a doctor and a nutritionist about medication and diet, but I\u2019ve also had a lot of luck with vitamin and supplement use.<\/p>\n<!-- Shortcode [rr-products] does not match the conditions -->\n<p>When I started really feeling the effects of joint pain and stiffness\u2014before I was medicated and even during medication\u2014I did a lot of research on vitamins and supplements. For one, you can never be too certain of what you\u2019re putting in your body. And second, it\u2019s good to have that autonomy and knowledge. (That said, just because the Internet\u2019s endless stream of immediate information is available to you does not mean you know everything. Always check with your doc first before starting any supplementation!)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Here\u2019s what I use to juice up my achy, break-y joints. I take each of the below once a day (except where otherwise noted) in the morning with my coffee and some fruit. Before supplementation, I was still doing much of the same: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/blog\/2018\/03\/23\/flexibility-vs-mobility\/\">stretching,<\/a> taking pain relief medication, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/blog\/2017\/08\/16\/i-tried-cleaning-eating\/\">eating<\/a> as well as I could. I can successfully report good news: I\u2019ve noticed a significant increase in joint mobility and pain level after taking these supplements for about a year. Three cheers for knees that don\u2019t pop and crunch with every jaunt up the stairs!<\/p>\n<h2>1. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/p\/sam-e-400-mg-60-enteric-coated-tablets\/vs-2659\">SAM-e<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>It might have a weird name, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/p\/sam-e-400-mg-60-enteric-coated-tablets\/vs-2659\">SAM-e<\/a> (or S-Adenosyl-L-Methionine), which is found naturally in the body and made by amino acids that we get through food, has been shown by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC387830\/\">studies<\/a> to improve joint function and tenderness. It could help with joint discomfort, potentially reducing the pain you feel when you&#8217;re all locked up.<\/p>\n<h2>2. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/search?search=cat%27s%20claw\">Cat\u2019s Claw<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>I won\u2019t lie\u2014the oh-so-witchy name of this supplement is what caught my eye. But <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/search?search=cat%20claw\">cat&#8217;s claw<\/a> (this shouldn\u2019t be mixed up with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/search?search=Devil%C3%A2%C2%80%C2%99s%20Claw\">Devil\u2019s Claw<\/a>\u2014which also aids joints but has a different set of benefits) has got some convincing science to back it up. First off, it may contribute to a reduction in joint discomfort, while also benefiting the immune system. Yes, please! A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4877453\/\">study<\/a> showed that cat\u2019s claw, when compared to a placebo, effectively worked to promote a reduction in pain, swelling, and tenderness of joints.<\/p>\n<h2>3. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/search?search=turmeric\">Turmeric<\/a><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/blog\/2017\/04\/27\/30-days-turmeric-golden-milk\/\">Golden lattes<\/a> are incredibly popular and delicious, yes, but not without good reason. Turmeric\u2014or more specifically the compound found in turmeric, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/search?search=curcumin\">curcumin<\/a>\u2014has been found to be effective in promoting relief from temporary joint discomfort. According to the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.arthritis.org\/living-with-arthritis\/treatments\/natural\/supplements-herbs\/guide\/turmeric.php\"> Arthritis Foundation,<\/a> turmeric has long been used by Chinese and Ayurvedic medicinal systems as a way to promote relief from pain caused by joint issues. In addition to taking one capsule of curcumin daily, I also frequently drink <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/blog\/2017\/04\/27\/30-days-turmeric-golden-milk\/\">golden milk<\/a>\u00a0(made with turmeric powder and hemp milk or almond milk). Some experts say that taking\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/blog\/2017\/11\/23\/turmeric-black-pepper-benefits\/\">curcumin with black pepper<\/a>\u00a0has been found to increase curcumin\u2019s bioavailability (which is a fancier way of saying its \u201ceffectiveness\u201d).<\/p>\n<h2>4. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/search?search=FISH%20OIL\">Fish oil<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>There\u2019s something about\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/p\/omega-3-fish-oil-600-epa-240-dha-1200-mg-180-softgels\/vs-2643\">fish oil<\/a>\u00a0that, for a lot of people, just seems gross. I get it. When you really think about it, it <em>is <\/em>kinda gross. However, I swear by it. Those little golden capsules, full of yellow-y joint-lubricating goodness, were one of the first supplements I took for my joints. And it helped. Bonus: Because fish oil is an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/blog\/2017\/04\/24\/omega-3-benefits\/\">omega-3<\/a>, it\u2019s also chock full of brain, gut, and skin benefits.<\/p>\n<h2>5. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/search?search=ginger\">Ginger<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>I never liked <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/search?search=ginger\">ginger<\/a>. But when my rheumatologist suggested that it might actually work to nix the symptoms I was experiencing, I decided to give a go\u2014at least in supplement form.<\/p>\n<p>According to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.arthritis.org\/living-with-arthritis\/treatments\/natural\/supplements-herbs\/9-supplements-arthritis-10.php\">Arthritis Foundation<\/a>, ginger has been shown to reduce joint pain when taken twice a day. I take one or two <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/p\/ginger-root-550-mg-100-capsules\/vs-2065\">capsules\u00a0<\/a>of ginger root daily (depending on my pain level), and often drink ginger tea for additional supplement. The bonus? Ginger seriously helps to settle any stomach issues, so it\u2019s a win-win. (This is especially the case for me, since my autoimmune disease, like many others, causes digestive problems.)<\/p>\n<h2>6. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/search?search=BOSWELLIA%20SERRATA\">Boswellia Serrata<\/a><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/p\/boswellia-serrata-standardized-250-mg-120-tablets\/vs-1885\">Boswellia<\/a> is the newest addition to my supplementation ritual. Interestingly, Boswellia is a plant found in India, the Middle East, and Northern Africa\u2014and it\u2019s known for producing sweet-smelling <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/search?search=frankincense\">frankincense<\/a>. However, its root has also been found to be effective for joint related issues. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3309643\/\">study<\/a>, there\u2019s some strong evidence suggesting that it is good for inflammatory conditions, although more research is necessary.<\/p>\n<h2>Bonus: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/search?search=capsaicin\">Capsaicin<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>Studies show that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/search?search=capsaicin\">capsaicin<\/a> (the active compound in cayenne pepper)) has a pain-reducing effect on discomfort caused by joint and muscle issues associated with physical activity or overuse. I swear by capsaicin gel. It\u2019s got a tingly, cooling effect\u2014which, for me, distracts from the deep throbbing pain of a stuck knee or tight upper back. Plus, it&#8217;s safe to use. Some people might not fall in love with its extreme hot-cold effect, but it does work to disguise the pain.
