There\u2019s no black-and-white answer, really; different people thrive on different types of diets. But there <em>are <\/em>some surprising side effects most of us can expect to experience after a breakup with bread and pasta.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>1. You Lose Weight Quickly<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Oftentimes people go <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/blog\/2017\/01\/26\/low-carb-food-swaps\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">low-carb<\/a> because they want to lose weight\u2014and when you cut out high-carb foods like bread, that happens fast. That initial drop on the scale those first few days is just water weight, though. \u201cCarbs hold onto water like a sponge,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyceatwell.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Deborah Malkoff-Cohen<\/a>, R.D., dietitian and certified diabetes educator in New York City.<\/p>\n<p>When you stop eating carbs, your body starts using the carbs it has stored up in your body to keep functioning, \u2018wringing out the sponge\u2019 and releasing water as it does so. Start noshing on carbs again, and you\u2019ll put that water weight right back on.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>2. You Feel Tired At First<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Carbs, which you break down into a form of sugar called glucose, are your body\u2019s preferred source of energy. While you get a slow and steady boost from complex carbs (like potatoes and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/ingredients-other-dry-goods\/N-cp99lq\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">oats<\/a>), which take longer to break down into glucose, simple, quick-digesting carbs (like white bread and rice) hit your bloodstream in sugar form fast, spiking your energy only to send you crashing later.<\/p>\n<p>Regardless of whether you usually eat a lot of simple carbs\u2014and ride the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/blog\/2017\/09\/11\/healthy-blood-sugar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">blood sugar rollercoaster<\/a> that comes with them\u2014or coast along the complex-carb freeway, cutting down on your total intake will probably leave you feeling pretty drained at first, says <a href=\"https:\/\/tipswithtoni.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Toni Marinucci<\/a>, R.D., registered dietitian in New York City.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Related: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/blog\/2018\/03\/15\/healthy-keto-meal-plan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Want To Try Keto? Here\u2019s What A Healthy Day Of Eating Fat Looks Like<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>When your body doesn\u2019t have enough glucose to run on, it eventually turns to its backup generator\u2014a state called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/blog\/2017\/01\/13\/ketogenic-diet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ketosis<\/a>\u2014and burns fat instead. Your blood sugar and levels of stored glucose in your liver and muscles (called \u2018glycogen\u2019) have to drop significantly to get you there, though, and you\u2019ll likely feel pretty awful as they do. (If you can hold out until you get there, most people feel better a few days into ketosis.)<\/p>\n<h2><strong>3. And Crabby, Too…<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>You can expect not to feel your happiest when you\u2019re depriving yourself of an entire food group\u2014especially when you\u2019re passing up on the bread basket during dinner out with friends. But the emotional impact of cutting carbs goes deeper than that: Eating carbs actually increases your brain\u2019s production of the mood-regulating chemical serotonin (often called the \u2018feel-good hormone\u2019), says Malkoff-Cohen. The less serotonin you pump out, the more likely you are to feel bummed out.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>4. You Might Even Feel Like You Have The Flu<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Ever heard of something called the low-carb or ‘keto flu’? Yeah, it\u2019s a real thing\u2014and it\u2019s <em>not <\/em>fun. When you cut down on carbs significantly, you might deal with flu-like symptoms like drowsiness, achiness, and nausea, says Malkoff-Cohen.<\/p>\n<p>A lot of these issues have to do with your <a href=\"http:\/\/neuro.hms.harvard.edu\/harvard-mahoney-neuroscience-institute\/brain-newsletter\/and-brain-series\/sugar-and-brain\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">brain<\/a>, which typically uses <em>tons<\/em> of glucose because it has so many nerve cells. When your brain doesn\u2019t have enough glucose to run full-steam-ahead, but hasn\u2019t transitioned to using fat, your neurons (nerve cells) don\u2019t function properly and you feel terrible.<\/p>\n<p>Plus, people on low-carb diets often lose out on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/endurance-support-electrolytes\/N-809\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">electrolytes<\/a> like sodium and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/potassium\/N-cp99i8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">potassium<\/a>, which can lead to some of those flu-like symptoms, as well as issues like heart palpitations and muscle cramps, Malkoff-Cohen adds.<\/p>\n<p>The low-carb flu should subside once you\u2019re a few days into ketosis, but if you\u2019re not <em>quite<\/em> low-carb enough to make the shift (like 20 to 30 grams of net carbs a day, \u2018low\u2019), symptoms might stick around.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>5. You Have Trouble Going No. 2<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Complex carbs, like whole-wheat bread and other whole grains, contain <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/fiber\/N-cp99ju\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fiber<\/a>, which keeps our digestive systems regular. If you cut out complex carbs and don\u2019t make up for that lost fiber with other foods (like vegetables, legumes, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/nuts-trail-mix\/N-cp99lk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">nuts<\/a>), you might fall short of your needs and have a more difficult time going to the bathroom.<\/p>\n<!-- Shortcode [rr-products] does not match the conditions -->\n<p>Men should aim for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dietaryfiberfood.com\/dietary-fiber\/fiber-rda-rdi.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">38 grams<\/a> of fiber per day; women should aim for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dietaryfiberfood.com\/dietary-fiber\/fiber-rda-rdi.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">25<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>6. Your Workouts Feel Pretty Meh<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Just as putting the kibosh on carbs can tank your overall energy at first, it can also leave you feeling like garbage in the gym. Marinucci typically recommends snacking on something carb-y (like a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/bars\/N-cp99la\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">granola bar<\/a> or piece of toast) about 30 minutes before working out, to provide your body with quick fuel.<\/p>\n<p>Lower-intensity exercise (like jogging) may not suffer much when you slash carbs, because your body can power it pretty easily with fat. However, you\u2019ll likely have a harder time pushing through higher-intensity workouts (like strength training or sprint intervals), which rely heavily on carbs.
