Most of us will crack under the pressure (and delicious scent) of free office treats at some point in the day, leaving us with a hefty side of empty calories. In fact, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurekalert.org\/pub_releases\/2018-06\/n2-lsf053118.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recent study<\/a> shows that your average office employee eats a whopping 1,300 extra calories at work each week\u2014mostly from free food at catered meetings, birthday celebrations, and the like.<\/p>\n<p>The study, which analyzed the diets of more than 5,000 people, found that nearly a quarter of office workers dig into food available in meetings and parties at least once a week\u2014and that the average person racked up an extra 1,300 calories a week in doing so.<\/p>\n<p>The study also found that those 1,300 calories typically came from foods high in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/blog\/2017\/02\/06\/sugar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sugar<\/a>, sodium, and fat. Yikes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Related: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/blog\/2018\/06\/01\/signs-you-eat-too-much-sugar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>9 Surprising Signs You Need To Cut Down On Sugar<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis study isn’t surprising to me,\u201d says Seattle-based <a href=\"https:\/\/www.champagnenutrition.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ginger Hultin<\/a>, R.D., spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. \u201cCandy bowls, donuts in the break room, and constant birthday party celebrations with cake and desserts are things my clients often struggle with.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWork can be a stressful environment and this study highlights a trend of mindless eating in the workplace,\u201d she says. More often than not, we\u2019re picking up these extra calories because they\u2019re <em>there,<\/em> not because we\u2019re hungry<em>.<\/em> Or, because we feel social pressure to join in on the splurges of our co-workers.<\/p>\n<p>If the thought of 1,300 extra calories a week isn\u2019t enough to make you rethink those frosted donuts, consider this: All that office snacking adds up to 70,000 extra calories a year\u2014a recipe for weight gain in the long run. \u201cWe know that being overweight or obese is linked to serious health conditions, which is why these numbers are so scary,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/nutritionalanatalie.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Natalie Rizzo<\/a>, M.S., R.D.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019ve been mixing work with salt-, sugar-, and fat-laden pleasure and want to cut back, ask yourself whether you\u2019re <em>truly<\/em> hungry the next time you\u2019re in a standoff with office treats, suggests Rizzo. And, when they\u2019re available, opt for heartier spread options like yogurt, cheese sticks, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/nuts-trail-mix\/N-cp99lk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">nuts<\/a>, or hard-boiled eggs, so you score some filling protein.<\/p>\n<!-- Shortcode [rr-products] does not match the conditions -->\n<p>Of course, that doesn\u2019t mean you should deprive yourself of goodies every once in a while, Rizzo says.
