But no matter what your lifestyle looks like, there are a few across-the-board no-no\u2019s you should avoid in order to make a nourishing diet stick. Here are five mistakes nutritionists see people make time and time again\u2014and how to correct them.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>1. Deeming Certain Foods Off-Limits<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>\u201cThe biggest mistake that I see people make when trying to eat healthy is eliminating things entirely from their diet,\u201d says Anne Mauney, M.P.H., R.D., blogger at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fannetasticfood.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fANNEtastic food<\/a>. Sure, you can avoid specific foods\u2014or even entire food groups\u2014for a while, but doing so sets you up for failure in the long run because deeming anything off limits automatically makes it more appealing.<\/p>\n<p>It also creates guilt around food, which can lead you to overeat once you do give in to your craving. \u201cI call it the screw it mentality\u2014when you eat something you\u2019re not \u2018supposed\u2019 to have and say, \u2018screw it, I\u2019ve already failed and started eating this, so now I\u2019d better eat a ton of it because I\u2019m never having it again,\u2019\u201d Mauney says.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of focusing on what you have to eliminate from your diet, think about what you can <em>add<\/em> instead. These should be things that can improve your health, like adding <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/protein\/N-cp99j4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">protein<\/a> to your breakfast or veggies to your lunch, or drinking more water throughout the day. \u201cWhen you frame eating healthy in a positive versus a negative manner, it\u2019s much more sustainable long-term,\u201d Mauney says.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>2. Going All-Out On Grains <\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Quinoa, amaranth, and other ancient grains are all the rage right now because they contain more protein than many other grains. But just because they fit into a healthy diet doesn\u2019t mean they should be at center stage, says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arianehundt.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ariane Hundt<\/a>, M.S., a clinical nutrition coach in New York City.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve been told by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.choosemyplate.gov\/MyPlatePlan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">government\u2019s dietary<\/a> guidelines to eat lots of grains, but the truth is that humans survived for thousands of years without them and we were healthier for it,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLoading up on lots of quinoa, rice, bread, and grains will not only slow fat loss, but can also cause various digestive system issues and immune system challenges,\u201d Hundt explains. Anti-nutrients found in grains, like gluten and gliadin, can damage the lining of your gut. Eventually, they can contribute to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/blog\/leaky-gut\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">leaky gut syndrome<\/a>, in which the integrity of the gut is compromised and undesired substances can leak into the bloodstream, create inflammation, and turn the immune system against itself, she says.<\/p>\n<p>Plus, today\u2019s grains are quite different than the grains of a few decades ago. \u201cThey\u2019re now much more loaded with pesticides and herbicides, which can disrupt our endocrine system and hormonal balance,\u201d Hundt adds. They also promote a greater blood sugar spike and insulin response, which promotes fat storage.<\/p>\n<p>You don\u2019t have to avoid grains altogether; just consider them more of a treat, and stick to whole grains in their original form as much as possible.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>3. Swearing Off Frozen Foods<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Just because fresh, in-season foods are good for you doesn\u2019t mean you should\u00a0<em>only<\/em> eat fresh foods, says Brigitte Zeitlin, M.P.H., R.D., owner of <a href=\"http:\/\/bznutritionny.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BZ Nutrition<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour produce doesn\u2019t only have to be fresh,\u201d she says. \u201cYou get the same <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/letter-vitamins\/N-cp99hy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">vitamins<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/minerals\/N-cp99i4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">minerals<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/fiber\/N-cp99ju\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fiber<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/antioxidants\/N-cp99id\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">antioxidants<\/a> from frozen [fruits and] veggies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why Zeitlin suggests making the most of the frozen foods aisle\u2014especially if you\u2019re trying to save some cash, since frozen foods are often less expensive. \u201cSave your fresh produce dollars for the veggies you want to eat raw, like [those] in your salads,\u201d Zeitlin says. Use frozen fruits in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/smoothie-enhancers\/N-cp99l4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">smoothies<\/a> to give them a thicker consistency, and add frozen veggies to stir-frys, egg scrambles, and cauliflower fried rice for quick, nutritious meals.<\/p>\n<p>Whether fresh or frozen, Zeitlin recommends splurging on organic for produce on the Environmental Working Group\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ewg.org\/foodnews\/dirty-dozen.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dirty Dozen<\/a> list, which lists the fruits and vegetables most likely to be contaminated by pesticides.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>4. Going Overboard On Bars<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>While <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/bars\/N-cp99la\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">meal replacement bars<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/bars\/N-cp99la\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">protein bars<\/a> designed to fuel your adventures and workouts can be good grab-and-go options, they\u2019re not necessarily the best snack for when you\u2019re sitting at your desk, says Zeitlin.<\/p>\n<p>Our bodies feel way more satisfied when we eat actual real foods, so \u201cmore often than not, bars leave us looking for more,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>Zeitlin\u2019s rule of thumb: Save the bars for when you need something quick, and look for one that contains five grams of sugar\u2014or less\u2014and lists ingredients you can easily identify and pronounce. (Good options: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/p\/double-dark-chocolate-paleo-egg-white-protein-bar-12-bars\/bhu1007\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bhu Fit Paleo Double Dark Chocolate Chip bar<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/p\/no-cow-bar-peanut-butter-cookie-dough-12-bars\/dsn1004\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">No Cow Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip bar<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<!-- Shortcode [rr-products] does not match the conditions -->\n<h2><strong>5. Snacking On Too Much Fruit <\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>As soon as you decide to jump on the healthy eating wagon, what do you turn to? Fruits and veggies. Though many of us struggle to get all of our daily vegetables in, most of us have no problem going to town on the sweeter stuff.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe you start the day by blending a banana into your smoothie, then have yogurt and berries as a mid-morning snack, an apple and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/nut-butters-spreads\/N-cp99ls\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">nut butter<\/a> with lunch, and a grilled peach for dessert. While none of these options is necessarily bad on its own, eating them all in one day is another story. \u201cFruit contains fructose, a type of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/blog\/sugar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sugar<\/a> that bypasses your blood stream and heads right to your liver, where it\u2019s readily converted into fat,\u201d Hundt says. In fact, if you eat 120 calories of fructose (about one cup of dried fruit), your body converts about 40 of those calories into fat, she says. Eat 120 calories of veggies, though, and only one of those calories becomes fat.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Related: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/blog\/fruits-most-least-sugar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>The 5 Fruits With The Most (And Least!) Sugar<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Another issue with fructose: It doesn\u2019t signal your brain that you\u2019ve eaten something, so you probably won\u2019t feel full after just one serving of fruit and are more likely to overeat, Hundt says.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re really jonesing for some natural sweetness, go ahead and have a serving of fruit\u00a0(see mistake number one). Try to stick to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.choosemyplate.gov\/fruit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">two servings a day<\/a> and opt for low-fructose varieties, such as berries, watermelon, kiwi, and grapefruit.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Diggin\u2019 What\u2019s Good?
