Because of our indoor lifestyles these days, though, even those who live near the equator are at risk for deficiency, says Valdez. In combo with regular exercise, protein has been shown to support lean muscle mass. One <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25169440\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">review<\/a> suggests that men who eat more protein while weight training develop larger, stronger muscles than those who don\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2804956\/#R4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Research<\/a> shows that we begin to lose up to three to five percent of our muscle mass per decade starting around age 30, so building as much of it as possible before then is crucial.<\/p>\n<p>Two of the most popular protein powders out there: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/whey-protein\/N-cp99j5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">whey<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/casein-protein\/N-cp99j8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">casein<\/a>. These complete proteins contain all of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/amino-acids\/N-cp99ic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">essential amino acids<\/a> (the building blocks of protein) we can\u2019t produce on our own. One essential amino acid, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/amino-acids\/N-cp99ic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">leucine<\/a>, is particularly crucial for <a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/jn\/article\/136\/2\/533S\/4664398\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">building muscle<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The government\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26797090\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">recommended daily value for protein<\/a> is a low 0.8 grams per kilogram of body weight (just 72\u00a0grams a day for a 200-pound person), but many experts suggest eating more. In fact, to maintain or build muscle, the <a href=\"https:\/\/jissn.biomedcentral.com\/articles\/10.1186\/s12970-017-0177-8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">International Society of Sports and Medicine<\/a> recommends eating 1.4 to 2.0 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight per day. (That\u2019s 127 to 181 grams for a 200-pound person.)<\/p>\n<p>Though it\u2019s not a complete protein, you may also want to think about adding <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/collagen\/N-cp99yc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">collagen protein<\/a> to your routine. \u201cCollagen protein is considered the most abundant protein in the body and can be found throughout the skin, muscles, tendons and joints,\u201d says Axe. And for men having trouble with focus and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26591563\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">stress<\/a> during the day and sleep at night (which tend to worsen as we age), it&#8217;s a <em>must<\/em>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/?term=tehran%2C+magnesium+supplementation%2C+insomnia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Research<\/a> suggests that magnesium relaxes the nervous system, reduces stress, and supports quality sleep.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why Balduzzi says it\u2019s the one supplement he considers foundational for the hard-charging men of the 21<sup>st<\/sup> century. He suggests supplementing with 400 to 420 milligrams per day.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Prioritize Prostate Health With <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/minerals\/N-cp99i4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Boron<\/a> <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The trace mineral boron is found in foods such as raisins, prunes, almonds, and chickpeas. If you don\u2019t regularly consume calcium-rich foods like dairy or dark leafy greens, adding a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/calcium\/N-cp99i5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">calcium supplement<\/a> to your routine can help you easily meet your needs, says Roussell.<\/p>\n<p>Up until your 70s, you need at least 1,000 milligrams of calcium daily, says Axe. From there, you\u2019ll need at least 1,200 milligrams.
