That’s because there\u2019s more to supplementation than popping a pill. <em>When<\/em> and <em>how<\/em> we take our supplements has a big impact on how effective they are.<\/p>\n<p>Below are seven potential issues keeping your supplement from working its magic.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>1. You Eat Or Drink The Wrong Thing With Your Supp<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>In some cases, what you eat or drink with your supplement can make or break its effects.<\/p>\n<p>Caffeine, for example, can limit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/iron\/N-cp99i7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">iron<\/a> absorption. In fact, just one cup of coffee can inhibit your body\u2019s absorption of the iron in a hamburger by 39 percent, according to a study in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/6402915\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>If you need supplemental iron, Jim White, R.D., owner of <a href=\"https:\/\/jimwhitefit.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jim White Fitness and Nutrition Studios<\/a><u>,<\/u> recommends taking it at least an hour or two after drinking your morning java.<\/p>\n<p>Other nutrients, meanwhile, should be taken alongside certain foods to boost absorption. If you take <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/vitamin-a\/N-cp99hz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">vitamin A<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/vitamin-d\/N-cp99i2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">vitamin D<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/vitamin-e\/N-cp99i3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">vitamin E<\/a>, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/letter-vitamins\/N-cp99hy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">vitamin K<\/a>, pair it with a meal that contains healthy fats. (Think <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/nuts-trail-mix\/N-cp99lk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">nuts<\/a>, egg yolks, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/seeds\/N-cp99l6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">flax<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/seeds\/N-cp99l6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">chia seeds<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<!-- Shortcode [rr-products] does not match the conditions -->\n<p>\u201cThese <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/letter-vitamins\/N-cp99hy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">vitamins<\/a> are fat-soluble and need some fat to dissolve and be absorbed by your body,\u201d White explains. Since most <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/multivitamins\/N-cp99ig\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">multis<\/a> contain notable amounts of these vitamins, take that alongside a fat-containing meal, too.<\/p>\n<p>When in doubt, check your supplement label. Most list the foods or beverages (if any) that mess with\u2014or help\u2014its absorption. \u201cSome specifically say to take between meals, and it\u2019s important to follow this direction because there\u2019s likely something in your food that\u2019s going to block absorption,\u201d says Amy Shapiro, M.S., R.D., C.D.N., founder of <a href=\"https:\/\/realnutritionnyc.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Real Nutrition N.Y.C.<\/a>, a private nutritional counseling and weight management clinic.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>2. You Take The Wrong Supplements Together<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Taking the wrong supplements together can have the same impact as taking a supplement alongside the wrong food. As tempting as it may be to take your supplements all at once, mixing some supplements can limit their individual effects.<\/p>\n<p>A classic example: iron and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/calcium\/N-cp99i5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">calcium<\/a>. Calcium can actually block the absorption of iron, so these two minerals should be taken separately, says Shapiro. She recommends leaving a four- to six-hour buffer between the two. You Take Too Much At Once<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>In some cases, you\u2019re better off splitting up your intake of a particular supplement throughout the day than taking one giant dose.<\/p>\n<p>Calcium, for example, should be taken in increments of 500 milligrams, because your body can only absorb that much at once, says Jessica Crandall Snyder, R.D., C.D.E., founder of nutrition, fitness, and wellness services company, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitalrd.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vital R.D.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Take more of a nutrient than your body can actually <em>use<\/em> at that time, and a lot of it just goes to waste.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>4. You Take Your Supp At the Wrong Time Of Day<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Since different supplements have different effects on your body, some are best consumed at specific times of day.<\/p>\n<p>Take <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/melatonin\/N-cp99m6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">melatonin<\/a>, for example: This sleep-supporting hormone is meant to help you score a quality night\u2019s sleep, so you\u2019re better off taking it before bedtime than first thing in the morning.<\/p>\n<p>Vitamin D, meanwhile, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/blog\/when-to-take-vitamin-d\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">might mess with your sleep<\/a> if taken at night (it <em>is<\/em> the sunshine vitamin, after all), and may be best taken with breakfast.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>5. You Have A Medical Condition<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>This one is a little more complicated than popping a pill at the wrong time. Regular blood work can help you monitor your nutrient levels and adjust any supplements as needed. In many cases, you may need to take in higher levels of certain nutrients than other people.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>6. You Take Certain Medications<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>In addition to certain medical conditions, some medications can also affect nutrient absorption, and thus the efficacy of your supplements.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/m\/pubmed\/19262546\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Proton-pump inhibitors<\/a> (often used for acid reflux and indigestion), for example, can affect <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/vitamin-b\/N-cp99i0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">vitamin B12<\/a>, magnesium, and iron absorption. Some diuretics, meanwhile, have a similar effect on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/magnesium\/N-cp99i6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">magnesium<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/magnesium\/N-cp99i6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">potassium<\/a>, and calcium.<\/p>\n<p>If you take any prescription medications, talk to your doctor about nutritional implications that might come with them. With that in mind, you’ll be better able to manage your health concerns <em>and<\/em> nutrient levels.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>7. You Just Take Bad Supplements<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Consider this your justification for not buying the least expensive supplement on the shelf.<\/p>\n<p>Since, unlike medications, supplements do not have to be FDA-approved before being sold, not all products are created equal.
