Many people consider their daily fish oil supplement as essential to their health routine as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/multivitamins\/N-cp99ig\">multivitamin<\/a>\u2014and for good reason, considering the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/blog\/how-many-omega-3s-do-you-need\/\">slew of benefits<\/a> it\u2019s been linked to.<\/p>\n<p>That said, there’s another fish-sourced supplement that should be on your radar: krill oil.<\/p>\n<p>Here, we dive into the difference between fish oil and krill oil so you can figure out which best suits your needs.<\/p>\n<h2>Fish Oil Basics<\/h2>\n<p>Your standard fish oil supplement is made by extracting the oil from fatty fish like salmon, mackerel, herring, and\/or sardines.<\/p>\n<p>Fish oil contains high levels of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/blog\/vegan-omega-3s\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">omega-3s<\/a> (particularly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/blog\/what-are-epa-and-dha\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">DHA and EPA<\/a>), a type of fat that’s been linked to all sorts of health benefits. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/lp\/nutritionists\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Vitamin Shoppe nutritionist<\/a> Brittany Michels, R.D.N., omega-3s support brain, heart, and eye health, along with your immune system.<\/p>\n<p>Michels, who has a family history of health challenges, takes fish oil daily. She even chooses to increase her dose during ultramarathon training season to support her immune system.<\/p>\n<h2>What\u2019s The Deal With Krill Oil?<\/h2>\n<p>Krill oil, on the other hand, is extracted from tiny crustaceans called Antarctic krill, a dietary staple of marine animals like whales and penguins.<\/p>\n<p>Like fish oil, krill oil contains the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/blog\/omega-3s-insufficiency\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">omega-3 fatty acids<\/a> DHA and EPA. The difference, though, is that krill oil has a different molecular structure than your standard fish oil. Instead of being an ethyl ester or triglyceride form, krill oil is a phospholipid.<\/p>\n<p>What does this mean\u2014and why does it matter? Some studies have found that krill oil\u2019s unique structure and form make it easier for the body to absorb and use, Michels says.<\/p>\n<p>Plus, on top of the omega-3s, krill oil also contains an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/antioxidants\/N-cp99id\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">antioxidant<\/a> called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/antioxidants\/N-cp99id\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">astaxanthin<\/a>, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18474276\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">research<\/a> suggests offers additional heart health benefits\u2014and may keep krill oil from going rancid as quickly as fish oil. (FYI: It also gives krill oil a distinct reddish hue.)<\/p>\n<h2>The Science On Krill Oil vs. Fish Oil<\/h2>\n<p>As research comparing fish oil and krill oil develops, keep the following highlights in mind:<\/p>\n<p>First and foremost, both fish oil and krill oil can effectively help you up your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/blog\/how-many-omega-3s-do-you-need\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">omega-3<\/a> levels. One study published in <a href=\"https:\/\/lipidworld.biomedcentral.com\/articles\/10.1186\/s12944-015-0109-z\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Lipids in Health and Disease<\/em><\/a><em>,<\/em> for example, identified no significant difference between the DHA and EPA levels of people who took either krill or fish oil for four weeks.<\/p>\n<p>Krill oil contains DHA and EPA in a lower amount than fish oil, but the same <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/blog\/omega-3-benefits\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">omega-3 benefits<\/a> apply, Michels explains.<\/p>\n<!-- Shortcode [rr-products] does not match the conditions -->\n<p>Since we store fish oil as triglycerides in our blood, it more effectively increases <em>blood<\/em> levels of EPA and DHA. Meanwhile, we store up to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3024511\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">65 percent<\/a> of krill oil\u2019s omega-3s as phospholipids in our cells instead.<\/p>\n<p>The takeaway: Even though we don\u2019t store as much of krill oil\u2019s omegas in our blood, we still reap their benefits.<\/p>\n<p>Research suggests krill oil may have another unique advantage: One <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/15656713\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Alternative Medicine Review<\/em><\/a> study comparing placebo, fish oil, and krill oil supplements over a three-month period linked krill oil with the greatest blood sugar, triglyceride, and cholesterol benefits.<\/p>\n<h2>So, Should You Take Krill Oil Or Fish Oil?<\/h2>\n<p>According to Michels, most of us can benefit from supplementing with either fish or krill oil. After all, the standard American diet generally lacks omega-3s. (Upping omega-3s is especially important, though, for those with family or personal health concerns, such as heart disease, she says.)<\/p>\n<p>Generally, if price is a concern, traditional fish oil is a more budget-friendly option. Krill oil supplements tend to be more expensive, perhaps because of the quantity of krill needed to produce them, Michels says.<\/p>\n<p>Since fish oil and krill oil may have a blood-thinning effect, talk to your doctor before supplementing with them\u2014especially if you have any health conditions or take medication.<\/p>\n<p>If you have a fish or shellfish allergy\u2014or dietary restrictions\u2014consider <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/p\/doctor-best-best-vegetarian-dha-frmo-algae-200-mg-60-softgels\/db-1305\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">an algae-based omega-3<\/a> supplement instead.<\/p>\n<h2>Shopping For Fish And Krill Oil<\/h2>\n<p>When looking for a fish or krill oil supplement, \u201cchoose brands with high purity standards to ensure low environmental contaminants,\u201d says Michels. \u201cHarmful chemicals and toxins [like mercury] are stored in fish\u2019s fat cells, so finding trustworthy sources is crucial.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michels likes to check <a href=\"https:\/\/www.consumerlab.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Consumer Lab<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/consumer.nutrasource.ca\/ifos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The International Fish Oil Standards<\/a> for trustworthy reporting on marine oil product quality.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll also want to take a look at your supplement\u2019s ingredients. Michels recommends avoiding products with added sugars, corn syrup, colors, or artificial preservatives.<\/p>\n<p>Plus, if you\u2019re purchasing krill oil, check that the supplement doesn\u2019t also contain a mix of other fish oils.
