However, certain biological and behavioral factors unique to men put them at greater risk for certain health problems.<\/p>\n<p>Let’s take a look at three of the common health concerns many men face today\u2014and how they can minimize their risk.<\/p>\n<h2><b>1. Declining Testosterone<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>Men\u2019s testosterone production peaks during their late teen years and remains high throughout their 20s and early 30s. From there, though, changes in production can vary.<\/p>\n<p>Many men experience a slow, gradual decline in testosterone levels starting in their late 30s or 40s. (On average, men produce about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/newsletter_article\/Testosterone_aging_and_the_mind\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">one percent less testosterone each year<\/a> in their 40s and beyond.) The decline can be so slight and gradual that men don\u2019t notice it for a decade or two\u2014or sometimes even longer.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/newsletter_article\/Testosterone_aging_and_the_mind\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Harvard Medical School<\/a>, \u201ctestosterone levels remain within the normal range in at least 75 percent of older men.\u201d However, <a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/15603-low-testosterone-male-hypogonadism\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">certain lifestyle factors<\/a> (like alcohol consumption and diet) can speed up the process.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">For many men, <\/span><a style=\"font-size: 1rem;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/blog\/signs-low-testosterone\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">declining testosterone levels<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\"> can contribute to fatigue, low mood, lack of sex drive, and muscle loss. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>In many cases, though, men can largely avoid plummeting hormone levels.<\/p>\n<h3><b>Supporting Healthy Testosterone<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>So what can men do hold onto as much testosterone as possible throughout the years? Exercising regularly, eating a healthy diet, and staying on top of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.urologyhealth.org\/urologic-conditions\/low-testosterone\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">underlying health problems<\/a> (like<b> <\/b>cardiovascular disease, depression, opioid use, and liver issues) are all essential.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<!-- Shortcode [rr-products] does not match the conditions -->\n<p>Strength training, in particular, can also help to preserve muscle mass and strength\u2014and support testosterone production. Maintaining a healthy weight is also important for minimizing declines in testosterone levels.<\/p>\n<p>Just note that certain uncontrollable factors, like genetics and trauma to the testes, can also impact <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4391003\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">testosterone function<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2><b>2. Mental Health Issues<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>Research published in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4478054\/\"><i>Journal of Psychiatry & Neuroscience<\/i><\/a> suggests that women suffer from depression and anxiety more often than men. However, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/afsp.org\/about-suicide\/suicide-statistics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">American Foundation for Suicide Prevention<\/a>, more men than women die from suicide each year.<\/p>\n<p>Why the discrepancy? <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/us\/blog\/talking-about-men\/201702\/mens-mental-health-silent-crisis\">Men report <\/a>that, because of social stigma, they\u2019re less likely to seek professional mental help when severely depressed.<\/p>\n<p>Unsurprisingly, delaying treatment for mental health issues further contributes to depression, which potentially increases men’s risk of suicide.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Changing The Conversation About Mental Health<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/us\/blog\/homo-aggressivus\/201409\/male-aggression\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Some evidence<\/a> suggests testosterone may be partially responsible for some men\u2019s behaviors\u2014and their effect on mental health. However, this certainly doesn’t tell the whole story.<\/p>\n<p>Men\u2019s social environment and conditioning play major roles in their thoughts, beliefs, and behaviors. I believe that it’s these factors that make men less likely to seek help for mental health concerns. Ultimately, fostering more open conversation about mental health\u2014and eliminating the stigmas surrounding it (especially amongst men) is crucial.<\/p>\n<h2><b>3. Chronic Disease<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>A good deal of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/blog\/why-men-often-die-earlier-than-women-201602199137\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">research<\/a> shows that men tend to live shorter lives than women. (About five years shorter, specifically.) While about 43 percent of adults over age 65 are men, only 33 percent of adults over age 85 are men.<\/p>\n<p>A number of factors help explain why men tend to live shorter lives than their female counterparts:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>As mentioned above, men may be less likely to seek medical treatment.<\/li>\n<li>Men are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewsocialtrends.org\/interactives\/strong-men-caring-women\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">less likely to reach out<\/a> and rely on social support from family and friends during times of stress and despair. This can lead to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apa.org\/monitor\/2011\/06\/men-die\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">social isolation and loneliness<\/a>\u2014especially in their later years.<\/li>\n<li>Men are more likely to have physically-demanding jobs and hobbies that may lead to injury (like motorcycle riding and biking).<\/li>\n<li>Men tend to have larger bodies than women, especially when overweight. As a result, they experience more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4307252\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">oxidative stress<\/a>, which has been linked to accelerated aging and earlier death.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Another major factor: chronic disease. In fact, men tend to die of <a href=\"https:\/\/draxe.com\/health\/coronary-heart-disease\/?utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_source=article&utm_campaign=vshoppe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">heart disease<\/a> more often\u2014and at a younger age\u2014than women.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Fighting Chronic Disease<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The good news here: Individual lifestyle choices play a huge role in longevity and chronic disease risk. Men (and women) have control over whether they smoke, exercise regularly, drink alcohol in excess, and eat a healthy diet.
