Here, Shaw and other dietitians share how they reset after the holidays\u2014physically, mentally, and emotionally.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>1. They commit to Daily physical activity<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Whether it\u2019s an hour-long sweat, a 10-minute walk, or just taking the stairs, prioritizing some sort of movement every day is a must for Shaw as she resets after the holidays.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Even when she\u2019s super-busy or traveling, Shaw keeps herself accountable by tracking her steps. \u201cThis may mean I\u2019m pacing the airport instead of making it out for a morning run, but I\u2019m fitting it in,\u201d she says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/blog\/workouts-burn-most-calories\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">7 Workouts That Burn More Calories Than Running<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">If you find this challenging, enlist the help of a friend. \u201cI\u2019m on the West Coast and one of my best friends is on the East Coast, but we constantly challenge each other through our Apple watches to help one another stay focused on our movement goals.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>2. They Double Down On nutrients<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Even nutritionists can get into an eating rut when they\u2019re busy and focused on other things. Once December has come and gone, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.franceslargemanroth.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span class=\"s2\">Frances Largeman-Roth<\/span><\/a>, R.D.N., dietitian and author of <i>Eating in Color<\/i>, makes a point to add more nutrients to all her meals and snacks.<\/span><\/p>\n<!-- Shortcode [rr-products] does not match the conditions -->\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/fiber\/N-cp99ju\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fiber<\/a> is a big one, since it promotes gut health, keeps you regular and may even help you lose weight,\u201d she says. \u201cIt\u2019s tough for many of us to reach the goal of 25 to 30 grams per day if we don\u2019t plan for it.\u201d She makes a big batch of quinoa or barley once a week to use in grain bowls and other recipes throughout the week. \u201cIt really helps me achieve those daily fiber goals, and also plan for healthy lunches,\u201d she says.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>3. They stick to a consistent bedtime<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Office parties and gatherings with friends and family tend to keep you out later than usual during the holidays. Often, the recommended seven to nine hours of sleep per night flies out the window.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/blog\/rituals-supplements-sleep\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">All Of The Health Problems Poor Sleep Habits Can Lead To<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">After the holidays, Suzanne Dixon, R.D.\u2014an epidemiologist with Cambia Health Solutions in Portland, OR\u2014gets back on track by setting a bedtime and sticking to it. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/ejcn2016201\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span class=\"s2\">Research<\/span><\/a> has shown that depriving people of even one good night&#8217;s sleep can lead to overeating the next day,\u201d she says. \u201cPlus, just one night of little sleep can increase insulin resistance, which means when if we <i>do<\/i> overeat, we&#8217;re more likely to store those excess calories as fat.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>4. They limit their alcohol intake <\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Whether it\u2019s mulled wine or egg nog, many holiday festivities involve alcohol. \u201cToo many cocktails takes a toll on the body, and most of us feel it in our GI tracts, fragmented sleep patterns, sluggishness, and fatigue,\u201d says Dixon. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">For these reasons, she cuts back on alcohol after the holidays. \u201cIt helps a lot of people reset mentally and physically,\u201d she adds.
