Yep, the latest CBD products getting buzz aren\u2019t for people; they\u2019re for <em>pets<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLike human products, there is a wide range of concentrations and formulations available for pet owners interested in CBD,\u201d says veterinarian <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/emily-luisana-693327177\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Emily Luisana<\/a>, D.V.M., Clinical Nutrition Fellow at BluePearl Veterinary Specialty Hospital of the Carolinas.<\/p>\n<p>So what makes these formulations pet-friendly? \u201cPet products tend to contain smaller amounts of CBD,&#8221; says Luisana. &#8220;They also often have added pet-friendly flavors (think bacon and salmon) or are made into treats or chewables.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ready for a test-run with your uptight cat? Here\u2019s a breakdown of what we know about CBD and animals, and how to gauge whether your pet might benefit.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>The History Of CBD For Pets<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Though CBD has really exploded throughout the last few years, it has actually been used for pets for longer than you might think.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCBD was discovered in the 1940s and used in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.avma.org\/sites\/default\/files\/2021-03\/APH-CannabisResources-Report-20201207.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">animal research in the 60s<\/a>,\u201d says Luisana. \u201cBut once the Controlled Substance Act was passed in the 70s, the ability to use or study CBD in animals drastically decreased.\u201d<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>According to Luisana, significant legal, regulatory, and professional red tape made it difficult to study, discuss, and recommend CBD for dogs, which it has been most commonly used for. To this day, the only true cannabis product (meaning one that contains THC) that veterinarians can legally prescribe is a drug called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epidiolex.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Epidiolex<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>How Does CBD Affect Pets?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Since most of the conversation around CBD and pets focuses on dogs, we\u2019ll stick to talking about our canine friends here.<\/p>\n<p>In case you need a refresher, CBD, aka cannabidiol, is the second most prevalent of the active compounds of cannabis, per <a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/blog\/cannabidiol-cbd-what-we-know-and-what-we-dont-2018082414476\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Harvard Medical School<\/a>. However, CBD itself is quite different than the THC cannabis is best known for\u2014and can be sourced from THC-free plants known as hemp.<\/p>\n<p>As it does with humans, \u201cCBD interacts with your dog\u2019s endocannabinoid system (ECS), the system of switches and signals that help to regulate numerous functions in the body,\u201d says Dr. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canopyanimalhealth.com\/en\/about-us\/our-leadership\/bob-menardi--dvm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bob Menardi<\/a>, D.V.M, veterinarian and director of Veterinary Technical and Educational Services at Canopy Growth. According to Luisana, dogs metabolize cannabinoids differently than humans, and we don&#8217;t yet know the implications of that difference.<\/p>\n<p>Another thing to consider: CBD could interact with other meds your pet is taking. \u201cWe are unsure of all potential drug interactions, so dogs who are on other medications <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/2076-2615\/9\/10\/832\/htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">may be at a greater risk of side effects<\/a>,\u201d Luisana explains. Plus, \u201csome cats and dogs have shown an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7029731\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">increase in liver enzymes while on CBD<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For that reason, you should consult with your veterinarian before adding CBD to your dog\u2019s routine. \u201cAlways speak to your veterinarian first before starting any medication or supplement,\u201d Luisana says. \u201cThey are the best-equipped to guide you.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><strong>The Potential Benefits Of CBD For Dogs<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>With all of this in mind, there<em> is<\/em> some initial evidence that suggests CBD may offer certain benefits for your furry BFF.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>1. It may support joint health<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/articles\/10.3389\/fvets.2018.00165\/full\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2018 study<\/a> from the College of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell University found that dogs with arthritis that were given two milligrams of full-spectrum CBD twice per day experienced improved mobility and were more active. A 2020 study out of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/339698157_The_Use_of_Cannabidiol-Rich_Hemp_Oil_Extract_to_Treat_Canine_Osteoarthritis-Related_Pain_A_Pilot_Study\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">University of Colorado<\/a> saw similar results.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>2. It May help Pets feel calm<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>\u201cJust like us, pets likely experience everyday stress,\u201d Menardi says. \u201cWe\u2019ve all observed moments when our pets get a little stressed or hyperactive and wished there was something we could do to help calm them.\u201d That\u2019s where CBD might come in. One <a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/articles\/10.3389\/fvets.2020.569565\/full\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2020 study<\/a> found that giving dogs CBD in conjunction with the antidepressant trazodone might reduce anxiety symptoms. The study authors note that more research on this specific topic will help clarify future recommendations.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Giving Your Pet CBD<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>If you decide to incorporate CBD into your pet\u2019s routine, shop for a high-quality product from a brand you can trust.
