The World Health Organization\u2019s International Agency on the Research for Cancer (IARC) classifies glyphosate as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iarc.who.int\/featured-news\/media-centre-iarc-news-glyphosate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cprobably carcinogenic to humans.\u201d<\/span><\/a> Meanwhile, as of 2017, the state of California includes glyphosate in a list of chemicals <a href=\"https:\/\/oehha.ca.gov\/proposition-65\/crnr\/glyphosate-listed-effective-july-7-2017-known-state-california-cause-cancer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s1\">known by the state to cause cancer<\/span><\/a>. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">The effects of glyphosate on human health go even further. \u201cGlyphosate is known to be linked to cancer, but that\u2019s not all,\u201d says Emily Achey, M.S., R.D., I.F.N.C.P., of the <a href=\"https:\/\/centerforintegrativehealth.com\/team\/emily-achey\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s1\">Central Coast Center for Integrative Health<\/span><\/a>. \u201cIt has also been shown to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3945755\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s1\">disrupt the gut microbiome<\/span><\/a>, which can promote a variety of diseases in the body such as autoimmunity, depression, Alzheimer\u2019s and more.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p3\"><b>Glyphosate And Oat Products<\/b><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s2\">Alarmingly, many oat products contain glyphosate residue. According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ewg.org\/news-insights\/news-release\/roundup-breakfast-part-2-new-tests-weed-killer-found-all-kids-cereals%2523.W75ePBNKhgc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s1\">Environmental Working Group (EWG)<\/span><\/a>, a watchdog non-profit organization dedicated to promoting human and planetary health, \u201c<\/span><span class=\"s3\">although glyphosate is used primarily as a weed killer on GMO crops, it can also be sprayed on crops such as wheat, barley, and oats to kill them and dry them out so they can be harvested earlier.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">While the EWG sees the safe upper limit of glyphosate as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ewg.org\/news-insights\/news-release\/roundup-breakfast-part-2-new-tests-weed-killer-found-all-kids-cereals%2523.W75ePBNKhgc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s1\">160 ppb<\/span><\/a> (parts per billion) for all crops, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) sets different tolerable limits for different crops. For oats, the limit is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.govinfo.gov\/content\/pkg\/CFR-2010-title40-vol23\/pdf\/CFR-2010-title40-vol23-sec180-364.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s1\">30,000 ppb,<\/span><\/a> leaving many products with remarkably high amounts of the chemical in them. And, in direct disagreement with the WHO\u2019s IARC, the EPA claims that \u201cresidues of glyphosate on any food or feed item are safe for consumers if they comply with the established tolerances.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Read More: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/blog\/foods-to-buy-organic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">5 Foods You Should Try To Buy Organic<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">So how can we make sense of the differences of opinion on glyphosate? <span class=\"s3\">\u201cJust because something is legal doesn\u2019t mean it\u2019s safe,\u201d says EWG toxicologist Alexis Temkin, Ph.D. \u201cStudies regularly find that the legal limits on contaminants in food, air, drinking water, and consumer products fall short of fully protecting public health, particularly for children and other people more sensitive to the effects of toxic chemicals. Federal government standards for pesticides in food are often outdated and not based on the best and most current science. The EPA\u2019s standards for pesticides and other chemicals are also heavily influenced by lobbying from industry.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">With that in mind, get this: Through a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ewg.org\/news-insights\/news-release\/roundup-breakfast-part-2-new-tests-weed-killer-found-all-kids-cereals%2523.W75ePBNKhgc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s1\">series of tests on oat-based breakfast products marketed to children<\/span><\/a>, the EWG found that two-thirds contained glyphosate in amounts higher than the organization\u2019s 160 ppb limit.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p3\"><b>How To Shop For High-Quality Oat Products<\/b><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p3\">So what does that mean for you and your bowl of oatmeal? Well, you might want to double down on your research and be extra picky about the oats products you consume.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">A good place to start: Seek out oats products that are certified organic. Since glyphosate is a synthetic herbicide, its use on organic crops is prohibited. \u201c<span class=\"s3\">Our research <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ewg.org\/research\/breakfast-dose-roundup\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s1\">has found<\/span><\/a> that foods made with organic oats had significantly lower glyphosate levels than products made with conventionally grown grains,\u201d says Temkin. \u201cTrace amounts of glyphosate were found on a few samples, probably because of wind drift from non-organic crops.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s3\">Since even some organic oat products may still contain small amounts of the herbicide, if you\u2019re passionate about avoiding any and <i>all<\/i> glyphosate, <\/span>Emanuela Taioli, Ph.D. M.D., <span class=\"s3\">director of the Institute for Translational Epidemiology at Mount Sinai, recommends looking for products specifically labeled as \u201cglyphosate-free.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p7\"><span class=\"s2\">One brand in this space, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/b\/bob-s-red-mill\/N-cp98j5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bob\u2019s Red Mill<\/a>, has long been responsive to consumer demand for the highest food safety standards. In 2016, they <\/span>released a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bobsredmill.com\/blog\/healthy-living\/bobs-red-mill-oats-glyphosate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s1\">statement<\/span><\/a> saying, \u201c<span class=\"s3\">in response to our customers, we worked with our oat suppliers to put an end to their use of glyphosate as a pre-harvest desiccant for all varieties of Bob\u2019s Red Mill <span class=\"s4\">oats<\/span>.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> (The Vitamin Shoppe carries a variety of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/b\/bob-s-red-mill\/N-cp98j5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">oat products from Bob’s Red Mill<\/a>, FYI.)<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">That doesn\u2019t mean you have to purge your fridge and pantry ASAP, though. <span class=\"s5\">T<\/span><span class=\"s3\">he EWG advises families to switch to organic foods when possible (and also when budgets, access, and personal circumstances allow) in order to minimize overall pesticide exposure, according to Temkin. <\/span><span class=\"s6\">\u201cReassuringly,<\/span><span class=\"s3\"> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ewg.org\/news-insights\/news-release\/study-switching-organic-diet-dramatically-lowers-glyphosate-levels\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s1\">research<\/span><\/a> has found that levels of glyphosate in people\u2019s bodies drop quickly just a few days after beginning to transition to an organic diet,\u201d she notes.
