(Don\u2019t you wish you could channel that same level of enthusiasm for early morning workouts?)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDogs offer people motivation and inspiration to get more active,\u201d says Marnie Kunz, C.P.T., USATF- and RRCA-certified run coach and founder of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.runstreet.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Runstreet.com<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most dogs require daily walks, so responsible dog owners will get their steps in even on those lazy days, or overcast ones where they may have otherwise skipped going outside if it weren\u2019t for their pet parenthood obligations, Kunz says. She\u2019s lost 11 pounds herself since adopting her dog in spring 2020. If you and your pup both need to shed some pounds, approaching the goal together can improve your weight loss success. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>Confirming that dogs can, indeed, help their humans lose weight (and vice versa) is a small study involving 60 dog owners that was published in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/articles\/10.3389\/fvets.2021.653920\/full\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Frontiers in Veterinary Medicine<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Researchers concluded that there are mutual benefits of weight loss programs for dogs and dog owners. As for the humans in the study, the mean percentage of weight loss was 5.3 pounds over the course of eight weeks. Think about those spontaneous breaks you take throughout the day to toss the ball to your dog or play tug-of-war with a rope toy. That\u2019s NEAT. Or those short little walks when your dog needs a potty break? Also NEAT!<\/p>\n<h2><strong>3. They Make Walking A Necessity<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dog owners are four times more likely than non-dog owners to meet physical activity guidelines, which call for at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise every week, according to a large-scale study published in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41598-019-41254-6\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scientific Reports<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that involved 385 households. The study found that most dog owners spend about 300 minutes each week walking with their dogs, compared to non-dog owners who spend 100 minutes per week walking. (It makes sense: If you don&#8217;t want your dog to pee on your carpet, you better get them moving outside.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWalking is the easiest thing a person can do for weight loss and good overall health,\u201d says trainer Donovan Green, C.P.T. and owner of <a href=\"https:\/\/donovangreenfitness.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Donovan Green Fitness<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cWhen it comes to walking for weight loss, you should aim to do at least 30 minutes of walking each day if you are just getting started.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p>If you and your dog are already in a routine of going for walks, try adding 50 percent to whatever you\u2019ve been doing previously to get more steps in, says <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">trainer <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Robert Dodds, C.P.T., founder of online fitness service <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nothingbarredfitness.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nothing Barred Fitness<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. (For instance, if you go for 30 minute walks, up it to 45 minutes). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s a good baseline for how many calories you burn walking, according to Dodds, who notes that this can vary by person:&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1,000 steps: 44 calories<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5,000 steps: 222 calories<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">10,000 steps: 444 calories<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">20,000 steps: 888 calories<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Walking is an aerobic activity, so for the most benefit you want to be in a heart rate zone of 70 to 75 percent of your max heart rate, says <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jack Coxall, C.S.C.S., co-founder of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/fitnesslab.fit\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fitness Lab<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which operates personal training gyms<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But go ahead and let your dog amble about and stop and sniff because pace doesn\u2019t matter too much\u2014the biggest benefit is that you\u2019re out walking, Coxall says.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>4. You Can Do Actual Exercises With Them<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to daily walks a couple of times a day, there are exercises that you can do with your dog, says Coxall. However, know this: Some dog breeds are more athletic than others, so you need to know which activities are within your pet\u2019s wheelhouse. (The American Kennel Club has rounds ups of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.akc.org\/expert-advice\/health\/best-running-dogs\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dogs that love to run<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.akc.org\/expert-advice\/lifestyle\/10-best-dog-breeds-for-hiking\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dogs that make great hiking partners<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.akc.org\/expert-advice\/lifestyle\/8-dog-breeds-perfect-for-athletes\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dog breeds that are a fit for athletes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hiking, especially if the incline is steep, can help you torch more calories than walking. The American Heart Association\u2019s journal <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ahajournals.org\/doi\/full\/10.1161\/CIR.0b013e31829201e1#R10\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Circulation<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> put together an analysis of studies that show pet ownership could lower blood pressure and obesity.&nbsp; <\/span><\/p>\n<p>Separately, an analysis that reviewed 10 studies and was published in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ahajournals.org\/doi\/10.1161\/CIRCOUTCOMES.119.005554\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Circulation: Cardiovascular Quality and Outcomes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that dog owners live longer.
