But experts say that occasionally taking days off to focus on your psychological and emotional health is paramount to your overall well-being and can help prevent burnout.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taking mental health days is definitely a big-time yes!\u201d says Los Angeles-based therapist Amanda Stemen, M.S., L.C.S.W., who is the owner of <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fundamentalgrowth.com\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fundamental Growth<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cOur mental and physical health are so inextricably linked that it’s no different than taking a \u2018physical health\u2019 day, a.k.a. sick day.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Read More: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/blog\/signs-of-seasonal-affective-disorder\/\">5 Signs Your Winter Blues Are Actually Seasonal Affective Disorder<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One benefit of taking mental health days, Steman says, includes preventing further mental and physical health issues. Also, these breaks can ultimately lead to higher levels of creativity, clarity, and concentration, which can translate to greater productivity at work and better relationships with colleagues, she points out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s what else you need to know about the benefits of mental health days, as well as therapist-approved tips for how to get the most out of restorative time away from work.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Signs you should take a mental health day<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The need for mental health days is especially relevant in today\u2019s \u201cgrind culture,\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">says <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/mountainpathllc.com\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lesley Smith<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, L.C.S.W., in Portland, Oregon. The pressure to be \u201con\u201d and \u201cavailable\u201d at all times is compounded by the ongoing global pandemic, Smith says, which comes with an added emotional toll, and, for some, the expectation to take on even more work. Amid the shift to remote work, those who are now working from home are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shrm.org\/hr-today\/news\/hr-news\/pages\/remote-employees-are-working-longer-than-before.aspx#:~:text=Nearly%2070%20percent%20of%20professionals,based%20staffing%20firm%20Robert%20Half.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">logging more hours<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than when they worked in an office.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some signs that you might need a mental health day, according to Smith, include: feeling exhausted, having difficulty concentrating, anxiety, dread, sadness, or being completely overwhelmed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another telltale sign that you need a break is that you\u2019re struggling to complete tasks that are otherwise simple for you, Steman says.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Plan Your Mental Health Day in Advance<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A good strategy for taking a mental health day is to plan it in advance, and don\u2019t wait until you feel like you really need it, says Newport Beach, California-based therapist <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kzcounseling.com\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kaylin Zabienski<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, L.M.F.T. \u201cAt that point, it might be too late to function as a preventative measure and will be more of a reaction and response to burnout,\u201d she says.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plus, when you plan your mental health day in advance, it gives you the opportunity to prepare, just as you might with a vacation day, Zabienski says. You make sure your tasks are complete or covered by someone else and you turn on your \u201cout of office\u201d reply so coworkers or clients know not to reach out. It also gives you the opportunity to set up appointments, whether that\u2019s a counseling appointment, massage, or a doctor\u2019s appointment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Read More: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/blog\/ways-youre-zapping-your-energy\/\">6 Ways You’re Unknowingly Zapping Your Energy<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While some organizations now include mental health days in employee benefits, you may need to\u00a0 use PTO, a sick day, or even unpaid time off, Zabienski says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ultimately, mental health days can be a part of a bigger self-care plan.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>How to spend a mental health day<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s important to note that you don\u2019t need to have a mental health illness to need a \u201cmental health day,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.drmonicavermani.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Monica Vermani<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, L.C.P., a licensed clinical psychologist and the author of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.book.adeeperwellness.com\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Deeper Wellness<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen work stressors or life events are emotionally difficult to navigate, a mental health day can help regain a sense of control,\u201d she says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vermani suggests spending your mental health day doing anything and everything that encourages and supports self-care and compassion for your tired body and mind.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSleep, rest, engage in an interest or hobby to enhance your connection to the small joyful moments in life,\u201d she says. \u201cReset healthy habits.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vermani suggests attending to self-care appointments, like massages or therapy sessions. You can also connect with nature, go for a walk, exercise, breathe, journal a gratitude log, or read. The goal here, she says, is to rest and rejuvenate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It can also be beneficial to unplug from social media and spend time with actual people, says therapist Keischa Pruden, L.C.M.H.C.S., owner of <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.prudencounselingconcepts.com\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pruden Counseling Concepts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhile social media is an enjoyable outlet to keep up with friends and loved ones and make new connections, it can also become a comparison trap, leading to people striving to have what others have or achieve what they see other people achieving,\u201d Pruden says. \u201cThis can lead to depression, anxiety, and other interpersonal issues.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What to do if you\u2019re feeling workplace burnout<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re feeling continuous workplace burnout, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stemen recommends exploring this with a therapist to identify the causes and explore solutions and ways in which to cope or change.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Burnout can be an indication of having difficulty setting boundaries or engaging in other regular self-care practices. However, the work environment can cause\u00a0 burnout, too.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes people need to take a medical leave of absence to recover fully from burnout, Stemen explains.
