If you know you\u2019re bothered by a specific allergen (like oak pollen, for instance), hitting the road for a run when pollen counts are at their highest is basically a recipe for sniffling and sneezing all the way home.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to a 2008 paper published in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.lww.com\/nsca-scj\/fulltext\/2008\/02000\/exercise,_athletes,_and_allergies.3.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Strength and Conditioning Journal<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, author Paul Sorace, M.S., C.S.C.S., states unequivocally, \u201cThe first priority for those with allergic rhinitis is reducing exposure to the allergen.\u201d So on days when the pollen count is through the roof, it\u2019s best to move your workout inside, or if you\u2019re particularly affected by pollen, switch your workout to something less taxing. \u201cFor example, walking or running on an indoor track or treadmill is recommended when pollen concentrations are high,\u201d Sorace explains.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Read More: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/blog\/treadmill-workouts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">5 Treadmill Workouts That&#8217;ll Make The Time Fly By<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Khalid suggests using the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pollen.aaaai.org\/#\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Academy of Allergy Asthma &amp; Immunology (AAAAI) website<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to find accurate information on allergy counts near you before heading out. \u201cI\u2019ve seen different sites using different ranges for pollen counts to determine what qualifies as \u2018high,\u2019 so just look at the source and the parameter for \u2018high,\u2019 \u2018moderate,\u2019 or \u2018low.\u2019 Generally it\u2019s measured as the average number of pollen grains per cubic meter,\u201d he says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Pay attention to the weather and time of day<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When allergens are in the air, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/msaac.com\/allergy-asthma-blog\/exercising-seasonal-allergies\/#:~:text=As%20long%20as%20you're,heart%20rate%20all%20the%20time.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">windy, dry weather<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> isn\u2019t going to do you any favors, as it\u2019s just going to blow more of those allergens right into your nasal passages. Plus, many allergen counts are highest in the mornings, so exercising first thing is a good way to set yourself up for sniffling and sneezing. \u201cPollen counts are usually highest in the early morning, so that might not be the best time to go for a run,\u201d says Steve Hruby, D.C., founder of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kaizenprogressivehealth.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kaizen Progressive Health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Scottsdale. \u201cYou can try to exercise during the early evening when pollen counts are lower.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also, exercising after a rain (while things are still wet) is a good way to reduce exposure to pollen, as the rain helps clear the air and keeps pollen from blowing around.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Pre-medicate and mask up to reduce potential symptoms<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If experience has taught you that exercising outside during allergy season is destined to leave you laid up with rhinitis symptoms, it\u2019s a good idea to pre-medicate before your exercise routine. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.lww.com\/nsca-scj\/fulltext\/2008\/02000\/exercise,_athletes,_and_allergies.3.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sorace\u2019s article<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> emphasizes that pretreatment with medication \u201ccan minimize or even prevent symptoms,\u201d but warns that competitive athletes should talk to their doctors and coaches about the medicines they\u2019re using to avoid taking something that could impact their performance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hruby also recommends pre-medicating, as needed. \u201cIf you\u2019re really struggling with allergies, you can try taking an antihistamine before you exercise.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In addition to antihistamines, you can consider homeopathic medicines like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/p\/rhineallergy-60-quick-dissolving-tabs\/bi-1299\">Boiron&#8217;s RhinAllergy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another option: wearing a face mask, which can help to filter out some of the allergens in the air when exercising outdoors.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Stay hydrated to reduce reactions<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lastly, don&#8217;t forget to hydrate!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You already know you\u2019re supposed to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/blog\/dehydration-causes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stay hydrated<\/a> during exercise, but it may be particularly important during allergy season\u2014especially if you have asthma.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You see, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6834710\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suggests that dehydration during exercise can further amplify the effects of exercise-induced asthma.
