Not only are most of us\u2014up to a whopping <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK555956\/%23:~:text=According%2520to%2520the%2520lay%2520press,frequent%2520cause%2520of%2520hospital%2520admission.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">75 percent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Americans\u2014in a constant state of dehydration, but our bodies especially need hydration following a night of sleep.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOvernight water loss happens through urination, but also through the skin and from breathing, which is something known as \u2018insensible water loss,\u2019\u201d explains Josh Axe, D.N.M., C.N.S., D.C., founder of<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ancientnutrition.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ancient Nutrition<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and member of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/lp\/wellness-council\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Vitamin Shoppe Wellness Council<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cIn fact, after a full day, about 300 to 400 milliliters [roughly a third of a liter] are lost from breathing\u2014and a lot of that happens during sleep.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It makes sense, since you don\u2019t drink water while you\u2019re sound asleep, that your body would require you to hydrate first thing in the morning. The thing is, not just <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">any<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> beverage will do. In fact, some beverages out there actually <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dehydrate <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/blog\/dehydration-causes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hydration status<\/a> isn\u2019t even the only thing affected by the drinks we sip. \u201cCertain beverages may set the tone for cravings, jitters, and increases in hunger,\u201d warns Roger E. Adams, Ph.D., doctor of nutrition and owner of<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/eatrightfitness.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">eatrightfitness<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cLiquids tend to move throughout digestive systems quicker, so even though you may have had 400 calories in your beverage, it will clear your stomach quicker than an equal amount of solid, more nutrient-dense foods.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While starting your day with a beverage is a smart idea, it\u2019s important to be choosy about what you sip on first thing in the morning. Here, nutrition pros break down your best and worst options.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Best Drinks to Start Your Day With<\/b><\/h2>\n<h3><b>Water<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s probably no surprise to anyone that water, which is hydration in its purest form, tops this list. By consuming water early in the morning, you are replacing what was lost overnight and getting a head start on meeting hydration demands for your upcoming day, according to Adams. \u201cIf plain water doesn\u2019t appeal, then add twists of citrus or mint,\u201d he suggests.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Green tea<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not only does <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/herbs-natural-remedies\/herbal-teas\/green-tea\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">green tea<\/a> provide you with a nice gentle boost of energy, thanks to the fact that it contains some caffeine (typically <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/blog\/how-much-caffeine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">30 to 50 milligrams<\/a> per eight ounces), but it\u2019s also rich in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/vitamins-supplements\/supplements\/antioxidants\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">antioxidants<\/a> that support brain and heart health, says dietitian Lauren Manaker, M.S., R.D.N. with<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nutritionnowcounseling.com\/\"> Nutrition Now Counseling<\/a>. \u201cMaking a glass of tea with a small amount of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/food-drinks\/superfoods\/honey\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">honey<\/a> for sweetness is all you need to start your day on the right foot,\u201d she says.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Water with apple cider vinegar and honey<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While it&#8217;s not recommended that you drink <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/food-drinks\/superfoods\/apple-cider-vinegar\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">apple cider vinegar<\/a> straight due to the fact that its acidic nature can cause <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3431744\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">erosion of the teeth<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/23979220\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stomach upset<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, mixing it with water is a great way to enjoy <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/blog\/apple-cider-vinegar-health-benefits\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">its many benefits<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/lp\/nutritionists\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Vitamin Shoppe nutritionist<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Rebekah Blakely, R.D.N., recommends adding one to two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar and one tablespoon of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/food-drinks\/superfoods\/honey\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">raw honey (<\/a>which can make the taste more tolerable and offers some additional health benefits) to your morning glass of water.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Lemon water with ginger<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To add some additional health benefits to a morning glass of water, Blakely recommends squeezing in some fresh lemon juice along with some fresh or powdered ginger. \u201cThe lemon has an alkalizing effect and provides some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/vitamins-supplements\/letter-vitamins\/vitamin-c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">vitamin C<\/a>, while the ginger has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits,\u201d she says. Coffee\u2014at least when it\u2019s highly caffeinated\u2014is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/28868290\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a natural diuretic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which means that it causes you to urinate more frequently and essentially lose water. Less than ideal after going all night without H2O! Another reason why coffee isn&#8217;t the best beverage to sip on first thing? Most people drink their coffee with a slew of added sugars and creams that can make them feel jittery, warns Manaker<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Here&#8217;s How To Take Control Of It<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don&#8217;t worry, no one&#8217;s suggesting you skip your cuppa <em>completely<\/em>. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sleepdr.com\/the-sleep-blog\/when-should-you-drink-your-morning-coffee\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many experts recommend<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> simply drinking your coffee mid- to late-morning, when the cortisol levels that spiked to get you up and at \u2018em start to wane. \u201cTo jazz up your coffee, you can include a sugar alternative like allulose that won&#8217;t spike blood sugars or contribute to caloric intake,\u201d says Manaker. \u201cA sprinkle of cinnamon or even cayenne pepper can give your coffee an interesting taste with no added calories, too.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Alcohol\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>Boozy drinks might be commonplace at weekend brunch<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but it\u2019s best to save the drinking for a little later in the day. \u201cConsuming any kind of alcoholic beverage removes water from your tissues, which means you need to drink even more water to remain hydrated,\u201d says Axe. \u201cPlus, any alcoholic beverage has very little to no nutritional value.\u201d If you\u2019re kicking off your day with brunch, consider skipping the Bloody, okay?<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>High-Caffeine energy drinks<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/food-drinks\/drinks\/energy-drinks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">energy drinks<\/a> are a go-to for many gym-goers and can certainly supercharge your workouts, they probably aren\u2019t an ideal first-thing-in-the-morning beverage. Many contain 200 to 300 milligrams of caffeine, which is equivalent to two or three cups of coffee, Blakely points out.
