The specific hot topic within this space changes more frequently than the weather forecast, with everything from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/digestion-gut-health\/other-digestive-support\/aloe-vera\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">aloe vera juice<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/blog\/ways-to-use-bone-broth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bone broth<\/a> going viral for their gut health perks. The most recent topic to hit #guttok? Parasite cleanses.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But are parasite cleanses <em>good<\/em> for your gut? And perhaps more importantly, are they actually necessary? Ahead, these answers and more.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>What Are Parasites?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before you can understand what a parasite cleanse is, and why it might be useful, you need to understand what parasites are and how they can affect your health.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parasite is the broad term for any organism that lives in or on a host and takes food from them at their expense, explains gut health-focused functional dietitian Paulina Lee, M.S.H.S., R.D., L.D., founder of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/savvystummy.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Savvy Stummy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In other words, parasites are nutrient mooches. Some parasites can live inside humans without wreaking havoc. Others, however, are more opportunistic.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Parasite Infections, Explained\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Put simply, parasitic infections are infections that result from parasitic overpopulation. \u201cIf they are given the chance, some parasites overgrow, causing imbalances in a healthy gut microbiome and leading to digestive symptoms,\u201d Lee explains.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a refresher: The gut microbiome is made up of a collection of over <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3667473\/#:~:text=Our%20gut%20harbours%20a%20complex,inflammatory%20bowel%20disease%20and%20obesity.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">100 trillion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> microbes\u2014bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms\u2014whose primary job is to work together to keep your digestive system running smoothly, says Lee. The gut microbiome also plays an important role in overall health, by aiding in mood regulation, immune system resiliency, and brain function.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Read More: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/blog\/gut-health-tips-from-gi-doctors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">6 Things GI Doctors Do To Support Their Own Gut Health<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When a gut microbiome gets thrown out of whack as a result of a parasitic infection, your gut and overall health can take a hit. \u201cThese infections can result in symptoms like stomach pain, cramps, nausea, vomiting, weight loss, flu-like symptoms, recurring SIBO (small intestine bacterial overgrowth), candida, histamine issues, sudden onset allergies, gas, diarrhea, constipation, and more,\u201d Lee explains.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Are Parasitic Infections Common?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t worry just yet; despite what a trip down the #guttok rabbit hole may have you believe, parasitic infections don\u2019t happen left and right. \u201cIt is not common for people in the United States to have parasitic infections,\u201d says board-certified gastroenterologist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ganjllc.com\/physician\/natasha-chhabra-md\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr. Natasha Chhabra<\/a>, M.D. So long as you wash your hands, consume cooked food, and drink clean water, you are highly unlikely to have to worry about parasitic infection.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That doesn\u2019t mean that people in the U.S. never have to deal with parasitic infections, though. Data suggests that about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/media\/releases\/2014\/p0508-npi.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">65 million<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> people in the U.S. are infected by one of the following five infections each year: chagas disease, cysticercosis, toxocariasis, toxoplasmosis, and trichomoniasis, which have been identified by the CDC as the five neglected parasitic infections (NPIs).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The culprit behind these? Consumption of contaminated food or water, says Chhabra. Most commonly this occurs after traveling abroad. (This is why recent immigrants to the United States also face increased risk, according to recent research published in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7075846\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parasitology Research<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). The reason for this is that, per the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news\/item\/18-06-2019-1-in-3-people-globally-do-not-have-access-to-safe-drinking-water-unicef-who\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">World Health Organization<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, one-third of the world does not have access to safe drinking water, meaning you\u2019re more likely to consume contaminated water if you&#8217;ve left the country, Chhabra explains.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Enter Parasite Cleanses<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Put simply, a parasite cleanse is a home remedy for parasitic infections. The goal of these cleanses is to eliminate parasites from the body without prescription medication, thus helping return your gut microbiome to its most optimal state.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Typically, parasite cleanses recommend altering your diet so that you don\u2019t consume foods parasites most like to feast on, says Lee. The big one here? Sugar. Parasites primarily feed on glucose, which is a sugar molecule, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mountsinai.org\/health-library\/condition\/intestinal-parasites\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai<\/a>. This means that any sweets like cookies and cakes support the lifespan of parasites, as well as foods (specifically, carbohydrates) that can be broken down into sugar quickly, such as crackers, pasta, and bread. Fruits, juices, and dairy products should also be avoided, they suggest<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In place of these sugar-rich foods, many experts <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mountsinai.org\/health-library\/condition\/intestinal-parasites\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recommend<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> consuming lots of raw garlic, pumpkin seeds, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/food-drinks\/superfoods\/beets\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">beets<\/a>, and carrots, as well as other<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6023319\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> foods with anti-parasitic properties<\/a> like ginger, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/food-drinks\/superfoods\/apple-cider-vinegar\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">apple cider vinegar<\/a>, and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">onion<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most parasite cleanses also incorporate supplements that help remove parasites from your system, Lee says. \u201cSome herbs that have been helpful include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/herbs-natural-remedies\/herbs-a-z\/herbs-o-s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">oregano<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/p\/black-walnut-wormwood-2-fl-oz\/vs-1817\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wormwood<\/a>, neem, mimosa pudica, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/p\/black-walnut-wormwood-2-fl-oz\/vs-1817\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">black walnut<\/a>,\u201d notes Lee. Other <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mountsinai.org\/health-library\/condition\/intestinal-parasites\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">herbs commonly used in parasite cleansing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/p\/oregon-grape-90-capsules\/ogw1011\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Oregon grape<\/a>, anise, curled mint, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/herbs-natural-remedies\/herbs-a-z\/herbs-f-n\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">goldenseal<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To be clear: A parasite cleanse is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the same as a medical treatment for parasites. Some health professionals may recommend certain diet edits and supplements. However, most doctor-led parasite cleanse treatments typically include <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8255490\/#:~:text=Albendazole%20and%20mebendazole%20are%20most,infections%20(taeniases%20and%20hymenolepiasis).\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prescription<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> medications like albendazole and mebendazole.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Do You Need A Parasite Cleanse?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ultimately, whether it makes sense for you to embark on a parasite cleanse protocol depends on your body, your current parasite status, and your symptoms.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you suspect that you have a parasite issue at play, solely attempting to self-treat it is not recommended, says Chhabra. One of the biggest reasons for this is the fact that the symptoms of parasitic infection mirror those of other gastrointestinal issues. In some cases, these at-home remedies simply don\u2019t work, says Chhabra. \u201cTypically, parasite cleanses recommend consuming ingredients based on symptoms, rather than based on the particular parasite you have,\u201d she explains. \u201cAs a result, many of [these cleanses] do not adequately treat the parasitic infection.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In other instances, the cleanse protocols can cause a slew of additional, unwanted symptoms that can range from mild to severe, according to Lee. \u201cThere could be changes in your bowel movements (like diarrhea), increased fatigue, inflammation, and much more, depending on the individual,\u201d she says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>How To Properly Treat and Diagnosis Parasitic Infections\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are experiencing a new set of gastrointestinal symptoms or otherwise suspect that you have been infected with a parasite, Chhabra recommends meeting with a gastroenterologist, who can administer a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/parasites\/references_resources\/diagnosis.html#:~:text=Blood%20tests&amp;text=SerologyThis%20test%20is%20used%20to,sending%20it%20to%20a%20lab.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blood or fecal test <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to help properly diagnose you. From there, they\u2019ll break down the targeted treatment necessary for your particular type of infection, she says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Lee, most treatment plans <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">will<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> feature <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mountsinai.org\/health-library\/condition\/intestinal-parasites\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">drug therapy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. However, it is possible that your parasite infection treatment plan will also include altering your diet and adding in a specific set of supplements, she says. In other words, your doctor may recommend a parasite cleanse. The reason it\u2019s worth collaborating with your provider here, though, is that the specific parasite cleanse they recommend for you will depend on the parasite you\u2019ve tested positive for, Lee explains.
