Those catchy ads (and your mom) had a legitimate argument for pushing glasses of milk on you: It’s a great source of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/vitamins-supplements\/minerals\/calcium\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">calcium<\/a>, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/vitamins-supplements\/minerals\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mineral<\/a> that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not only builds healthy bones, but also helps regulate heart rate, allows muscles to contract, and supports normal blood clotting.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Yet while many of us grew up with a refrigerator that almost always featured a carton of milk front and center, plenty of us don’t think much about calcium as adults\u2014and may fall short on this<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> critical micronutrient. (FYI: <a href=\"https:\/\/ods.od.nih.gov\/factsheets\/calcium-HealthProfessional\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Postmenopausal women and those who don’t eat much dairy<\/a>, which is a lot of people these days, are at the greatest risk here.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other than breaking a bone\u2014which we\u2019d <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">really <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rather you not do\u2014various signs and symptoms can indicate that your calcium levels have dropped. Hardcore PMS<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s normal to feel moody in the days leading up to menstruating, but if you find yourself bloating up like a balloon and weeping over all the little things, a nutrient deficiency could be the culprit. \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7716601\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Studies<\/a> indicate that low levels of calcium could be a predictor of PMS symptoms of low mood, fatigue, and bloating,\u201d says<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.consumerhealthdigest.com\/author\/emily-maus\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Emily Maus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, R.D., a registered dietitian with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livewelldietitian.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Live Well Dietitian<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and nutrition consultant for<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.consumerhealthdigest.com\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consumer Health Digest<\/span><\/a> who specializes in <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">women\u2019s hormones<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cAdequate levels of calcium are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5313351\/#:~:text=Some%20studies%20have%20reported%20significant,and%20tryptophan%20metabolism%20%5B14%5D.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">needed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to release the mood-regulating hormone serotonin. If calcium levels are low, menstruating females are more likely to suffer from depression, anxiety, anger, and irritability.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>That’s why Maus recommends menstruating women <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">load up on calcium (among a few other specific nutrients!) before their menstrual cycle. Turn to d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">airy products, broccoli, seeds, sardines, and almonds, or consider a<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/vitamins-supplements\/minerals\/calcium\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">calcium <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">supplement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to fulfill even more of your daily needs.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>2. For example, one<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/11690570\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">older study from 2001<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found a direct link between poor calcium intake and tooth loss in people aged 65 and older. People whose intake was sufficient were significantly less likely to lose their chompers than those who didn\u2019t take in enough. In other words, a glass of milk (or supplement) a day could keep the dentist away.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>3. Dry Skin<\/b><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is your dry, flaky skin due to the changing of seasons\u2014or the result of a calcium deficiency? According to naturopath <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/patients.sonoran.edu\/faculty\/alaa-gerais\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Alaa Gerais, N.M.D.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, of Sonoran University of Health Sciences in Arizona, calcium plays a role in maintaining smooth, moisturized skin. \u201cCalcium helps the skin barrier maintain its proper pH balance, which allows the skin to stay moisturized,\u201d she explains. Muscle Cramps<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At some point, most of us have experienced the unique misery of a running cramp or a nighttime charley horse. If you get these frequently, though, they can put a real, well, cramp in your sleep or workout routine.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To outwit painful muscle contractions, you may want to check in on your calcium intake. \u201cCalcium is needed to control the reaction between two fibrous filaments involved in muscle contraction. When this mineral is low, it causes the two proteins (myosin and actin) to contract easily, causing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/blog\/muscle-cramps\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">muscle cramps<\/a>,\u201d Maus says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>6. Fatigue<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fatigue can have dozens of causes, so feeling sluggish doesn\u2019t necessarily merit an instant blood test to check on your calcium. Still, when combined with other symptoms on this list, tiredness\u2014especially muscular fatigue\u2014might point to problems with your levels. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSince calcium is used to help skeletal muscles contract, deficiency can cause muscular fatigue, making you feel tired,\u201d Gerais explains.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And get this: Low calcium might not cause physical fatigue alone. It could be behind the feeling of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/blog\/culprits-behind-brain-fog\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mental fog<\/a>, too. \u201cCalcium is also needed for nerves to communicate, so when there is a deficiency, nerve firing can slow, causing mental fatigue,\u201d adds Gerais.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Think You’re Low On Calcium? Here’s What To Do<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The only way to know whether your calcium levels have dipped is to get a blood test. So if you\u2019re concerned you may be deficient, start there.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the meantime, though, it\u2019s never a bad idea to ramp up on healthy, whole foods that contain plenty of calcium. \u201cInclude more calcium-rich foods by adding foods like yogurt, cheese, fortified soy products, almonds, and leafy greens,\u201d Maus recommends. For reference, both athletes and sedentary adults aged 19 to 50 should strive for <a href=\"https:\/\/ods.od.nih.gov\/factsheets\/calcium-HealthProfessional\/#h2\">1,000 milligrams<\/a> of calcium per day. (A serving of plain, low-fat yogurt contains about 415 milligrams, while a serving of canned bone-in sardines offers 325 milligrams.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While you\u2019re at it, be sure to add foods that contain <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/vitamins-supplements\/letter-vitamins\/vitamin-d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">vitamin D<\/a>, too. According to Gerais, calcium deficiency isn\u2019t all that common by itself\u2014instead, it\u2019s usually linked to vitamin D deficiency, which can lead to calcium losses because it’s needed for proper absorption. Some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/blog\/vitamin-d-foods\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">high-vitamin D foods<\/a> include fortified dairy and orange juice, fatty fish, egg yolks, and mushrooms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In some cases, adding a supplement may be a good bet for getting enough of these two nutrients. \u201cAlthough adequate calcium can be consumed through diet, supplementation may benefit some individuals, including those with bone health concerns, people who limit or avoid dairy products, or those who struggle to absorb nutrients, such as those with gut health issues,\u201d Maus says.
