One 2020 paper published in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s10902-020-00261-5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Journal of Happiness Studies<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reported that practicing gratitude for 15 minutes a day, five days a week for at least six weeks enhanced mental wellness and possibly promoted a lasting change in perspective.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, new research suggests that the perks of gratitude extend beyond just your mind. Kim Hoffman, L.M.F.T., is a licensed marriage and family therapist with <a href=\"https:\/\/tennesseebehavioralhealth.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tennessee Behavioral Health<\/a>.<\/span><\/em><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>The Research<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A recent <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/news\/2023-10-gratitude-good-heart.html#google_vignette\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">longitudinal study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (in which researchers tracked participants over time) has identified another perk to add to gratitude\u2019s resume: better heart health. However, the longitudinal study published in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0301051123001813\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Biological Psychology<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was the first to examine the direct link between gratitude and heart attacks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Researchers checked in with participants twice over the course of about seven years for this study. After surveying the participants\u2019 inclination towards gratitude and collecting information about their heart health, they concluded that \u201cgratitude was significantly associated with reduced risk of acute myocardial infarction.\u201d Basically, the more predisposed participants were to appreciate the good in the world, the less likely they were to have a heart attack.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What It Means For You<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clearly, there\u2019s something to this whole gratitude thing. In fact, the researchers noted that \u201cthis study highlights the potential utility of positive psychological factors, such as gratitude, in promoting cardiovascular health.\u201d Talk about a low-cost and accessible intervention!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>How To Foster Gratitude<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The study noted that gratitude comes more naturally to some people than others. So, if you want to feel more grateful\u2014whether for the benefit of your ticker or not\u2014these expert-backed tips can help you tap into the warm-fuzzy feeling.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>1. Start a daily practice<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s a reason it\u2019s called a &#8220;gratitude <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">practice<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.&#8221; You really do have to practice. And the best way to do that, experts agree, is to create a daily ritual that\u2019s all about identifying what you\u2019re grateful for.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For many people, journaling is a simple way to get started, according to Mark Verber, L.P.C., of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/epiccounselingsolutions.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EPIC Counseling Solutions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Consider this when you feel stuck<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re seriously struggling to name a few things you\u2019re grateful for or step into that headspace, Baum suggests simply connecting with your body and considering all of the things it is doing for you in that moment. Are you breathing? Is your heart beating? There\u2019s something to be grateful for right there.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You could also note what you\u2019re <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> going through, she says. For example, you may recognize that you\u2019ve gotten over that nasty cold or that your mom\u2019s blood sugar has improved.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>3. Become A silver lining Hunter<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You might have to work this one, but another way to step into greater gratitude is to search (like really <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">look<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) for the silver linings or lessons learned in difficult situations, suggests marriage and family therapist Kim Hoffman, L.M.F.T., of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tennesseebehavioralhealth.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tennessee Behavioral Health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cThis shift in mindset does not negate the difficulty of the situation but helps you find something valuable within it,\u201d she says. And when you can see the value in all circumstances, you can be grateful for them.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>4. Speak your gratitude<\/b><b><\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though you can certainly keep your gratitude practice a personal ritual, bringing others into the experience can make it all the richer. Try to make a point to say \u201cthank you\u201d more often, suggests Hoffman. Or, you could even set aside a few minutes each week to send thoughtful messages to people in your life or show your appreciation for those who have helped you. \u201cThis not only boosts your sense of gratitude but [can] also strengthen your relationships,\u201d Hoffman says.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>5. Be patient<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As with any new practice, the most important thing you can do when starting a gratitude practice is to be patient with yourself. \u201cDeveloping gratitude is a process and it takes time to cultivate,\u201d shares Hoffman. \u201cDo not be discouraged if you do not feel a change overnight.
