W<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">e did some sleuthing to solve the mystery\u2014and find out how to finally give it the boot.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em style=\"font-family: 'Josefin Sans', Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 0.875rem; font-weight: bold; text-transform: uppercase;\"><strong>ABOUT OUR EXPERT:<\/strong><\/em><em><em><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Dr. Gregory Smith, M.D., is an attending physician of otolaryngology and head and neck surgery at <a href=\"https:\/\/njent.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NJ ENT<\/a>. Dr. Nazlie Latefi, Ph.D., is a molecular biologist and pulmonary disease researcher, and the creator of Biovanta.<\/span><\/em><\/em><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Why Coughs Linger<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coughs are actually one of your body\u2019s primary defense mechanisms. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Typically, a cough is present to clear from the airway any material which may affect the ability of the lungs to receive adequate air,\u201d explains Dr. Gregory Smith, M.D., attending physician of otolaryngology and head and neck surgery at<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/njent.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NJ ENT<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cWhen thickened mucous or secretions from the lungs accumulate during a viral illness, a cough helps us expel them to keep the airways free for air exchange.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately, sometimes, a cough can go past this call of duty. Smith says this may happen because of irritation from post-nasal drip or continued sinus drainage from a low-grade sinus infection. A viral illness may even trigger a reactive airway condition like asthma. Some people also end up with a bacterial infection in the lungs (i.e. pneumonia) post-virus that causes a deep cough that won\u2019t budge, he says.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On top of that, a not-so-lucky few of us may be physically predisposed to experience lingering coughs. \u201cSome patients may have a preexisting irritation near the cough sensors in the voice box from reflux (laryngopharyngeal reflux), which may make a cough linger longer if irritated by the viral infection,\u201d Smith says.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the other hand, some coughs may have more of a connection to our nervous system than our respiratory system. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One reason a cough may linger is that once the autonomic neuronal pathways are triggered, the neurons may become hyperexcitable and resist shutting down,\u201d says molecular biologist and pulmonary disease researcher Dr. Nazlie Latefi, Ph.D., creator of<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Biovanta<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In other words, your nervous system can continue to think you need to cough, even after you\u2019ve cleared the illness. \u201cThis is more likely to happen the longer a cough lasts, so it\u2019s best to treat the inflammation as soon as possible,\u201d Latefi adds.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>How to Shake a Lingering Cough<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Want to get control of a cough before it hitches a ride on your respiratory tract for months at a time? Here\u2019s how to attack the hack.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>1. Hydrate<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It may be old-school advice, but simply drinking more water can make a difference to that tickle in your throat. If you\u2019ve got a cough, both Latefi and Smith recommend increasing your fluid intake to maintain moisture within your airways. Need evidence? A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC9030844\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2022 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on teens with asthma found that their hydration status was directly correlated with the incidence and duration of coughing episodes. Instead, stick to using one in the bedroom and turn it on only at select times, such as when you\u2019re sleeping, she suggests.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>3 Irrigate Your Sinuses<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maybe this is the year you finally jump on the neti pot train. Sinus irrigation is worth it if it helps relieve a never-ending cough\u2014and it just might do the trick. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nasal saline irrigation can be helpful if a sinus component is present to assist in drainage of the sinuses,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d Smith says.<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC9475221\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s right, research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> confirms that nasal irrigation can remove infectious material from the sinuses and reduce cough.
