For some of us, though, the evening is a harbinger of a less pleasant experience: excessive gas. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Feeling bloated and gassy at night can put a damper on your plans, as well as disrupt your sleep. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here, experts share common reasons for nighttime gas, plus how to nip it in the bud.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em style=\"font-family: 'Josefin Sans', Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 0.875rem; font-weight: bold; text-transform: uppercase;\"><strong>ABOUT OUR EXPERTS:<\/strong><\/em><em><em><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Danielle VenHuizen, M.S., R.D.N., is a digestion-centric registered dietitian with<a href=\"https:\/\/foodsense.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Food Sense Nutrition<\/a>.<a href=\"https:\/\/kennethbrownmd.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0Dr. Kenneth Brown, M.D<\/a>., is a gastroenterologist.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gidoctor.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0Peyton Berookim, M.D., M.A., F.A.C.G., A.G.A.F<\/a>., is a gastroenterologist.<\/span><\/em><\/em><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Reasons for Nighttime Gas<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gas can gradually pick up steam<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as the day progresses, according to digestion-centric dietitian Danielle VenHuizen, M.S., R.D.N., of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/foodsense.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Food Sense Nutrition<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a gut health dietitian, I find that having gas late in the evening or even at night is usually caused by a buildup of gas produced throughout the day,\u201d she says. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You see, as bacteria ferment certain carbohydrates, they release gas that should normally move through our system and be expelled. Sometimes, though, this gas essentially gets \u2018stuck\u2019 in various parts of the digestive system. The result: \u201cIt&#8217;s not uncommon for clients to tell me they feel great in the morning, but that by the evening their stomach feels like a tight balloon,\u201d says VenHuizen.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to VenHuizen, this holdup of gas <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> happen when folks are transitioning to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/blog\/benefits-of-a-high-fiber-diet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">higher-fiber diet<\/a>, but more often, a disruption in the microbiome is to blame. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When pathogenic bacteria set up shop in the digestive tract, they often produce a lot of gas and in places where gas is not normally produced, causing pain and discomfort,\u201d says VenHuizen. Pathogenic (a.k.a. bad) bacteria can also affect food\u2019s movement within the gut and prevent gas from escaping as it normally would.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another surprising possibility behind nighttime toots? Your sleep quality. \u201cStudies have shown that lack of sleep can cause changes in gut motility, increase inflammation, and affect the immune system, all of which can lead to dysbiosis and an altered gut microbiome,\u201d explains gastroenterologist<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/kennethbrownmd.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Kenneth Brown, M.D<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Unsurprisingly, people with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) are particularly at risk of a vicious cycle of poor sleep and microbiome disruption. According to a large<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5985632\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2018 meta-analysis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 37 percent of patients with IBS also have sleep disorders.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Read More: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/blog\/evening-routine-tweaks-for-better-sleep\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Make These Changes to Your Evening Routine to Sleep Better<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And IBS isn\u2019t the only health condition that could make gas show up later in the day. \u201cD<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">eeper issues such as small intensive bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), or a stomach infection such as H. pylori, may also result in such symptoms,\u201d notes gastroenterologist <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gidoctor.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Peyton Berookim, M.D., M.A., F.A.C.G., A.G.A.F<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If bloating and flatulence are becoming a regular disruption to your evenings, it\u2019s best to mention it to your doctor.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>7 Ways to Prevent Nighttime Gas<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Quelling your internal airhorn might ultimately require a doctor\u2019s visit, but it could also be as simple as making some lifestyle changes. Try these tips.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>1. Identify Triggering Foods (And Stear Clear)<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ever heard of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/blog\/fodmaps\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">low-FODMAP diet<\/a>? This eating plan focuses on foods that contain minimal levels of a certain type of short-chain carbohydrates. VenHuizen says following its guidelines can significantly reduce nighttime gas. \u201cHigh-FODMAP foods, which contain a high amount of fermentable fibers that pathogenic bacteria love, can cause a lot of gas and bloating for some people,\u201d she says.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some high-FODMAP foods to avoid: dairy products, apples, onions, garlic, and wheat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Low-FODMAP foods, meanwhile, include dairy-free milks, bananas, tomatoes, citrus fruits, and lean meats (among plenty of others!).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re not sure <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which foods may be triggers for you, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Berookim <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recommends <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/blog\/two-types-of-food-journaling\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">keeping a food journal<\/a> and tracking your eats and subsequent symptoms.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>2. Eat Slowly and Early<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stopping flatulence in the wee hours isn\u2019t always a matter of what you eat, but when and how you eat. Brown recommends doing your best to take the time to chew food thoroughly and enjoy meals at a leisurely pace. \u201cEating too quickly causes excess air swallowing, which allows more air into the digestive tract and can lead to gas and bloating,\u201d she explains.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You may also notice a difference after moving your dinnertime up to earlier in the evening. \u201cEating several hours before bedtime helps in that the digestive process is not as active when we sleep,\u201d Brown says.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>3. Make Time to Move<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moving your body throughout the day has the wonderful perk of moving gas out of your system. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Staying active can help increase motility in the gut, which may help that trapped gas escape,\u201d explains VenHuizen. So the more generally active you are, the better. As for more intense workouts, though, Berookim recommends scheduling them for earlier in the day. Exercising too close to bedtime can disrupt the rhythm of normal digestion.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>4. Eat or Drink Something Acidic<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Conventional wisdom says that eating acidic foods can cause acid reflux and disrupt sleep. But an orange or some tomato juice could be <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">just<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the thing that squashes sleep-disturbing gas. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes adding more acidity to the stomach, which supports better digestion, can reduce gas,\u201d VenHuizen explains. \u201cConsider drinking some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/food-drinks\/superfoods\/apple-cider-vinegar\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">apple cider vinegar<\/a> or taking a hydrochloric acid supplement before meals to help enhance digestion and reduce bloating.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>5. Stay Hydrated<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drink up! Staying hydrated is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">always <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a good idea, but it\u2019s especially helpful when you\u2019re fighting the battle of evening bloat. \u201cDrinking adequate water and fluids like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/herbs-natural-remedies\/herbal-teas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">herbal teas<\/a> aids digestion by helping break down food and moving gas and stool through the intestines more efficiently,\u201d Brown shares.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>6. Try a Supplement<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though the data on supplements that are beneficial <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">specifically<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for <em>nighttime<\/em> gas is limited, there are certainly a few known to be generally helpful for the ol&#8217; balloon belly. \u201cSome people have success with taking <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/digestion-gut-health\/enzymes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">digestive enzymes<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/herbs-natural-remedies\/herbs-a-z\/herbs-o-s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">peppermint<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/digestion-gut-health\/other-digestive-support\/charcoal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">activated charcoal<\/a>,\u201d Brown notes. Give Yourself an Abdominal Massage<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If gas is painful or keeping you awake at night, try giving yourself a mini massage to encourage it to move on out. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gentle abdominal massage may help, encouraging the intestines to move and release some of the trapped gas<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d says VenHuizen.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.umich.edu\/1libr\/MBCP\/AbdominalSelfmassage.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">University of Michigan Medicine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you\u2019ll want to start on your lower right side. Move upward in a circular motion, then straight across to your left side, and down again.
