If not properly maintained, your mouth can become a breeding ground for harmful bacteria. And since the mouth is connected to the rest of the digestive tract, when there are pathogenic bacteria in your mouth, they can travel into your gut, where they can enter your bloodstream and other internal organs, Hoang explains. Clearly, keeping your smile healthy is about far more than just appearances.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>5 Nutrients That Are Essential For Oral Health<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, how does one eat their way to healthier teeth? There are a few nutrients you\u2019ll need your fair share of.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>1. Calcium<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Y<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ou likely had a parent at one point wax poetic about the benefits of chugging calcium-rich milk for bone health. However, most people leave milk, as well as a focus on consuming adequate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/vitamins-supplements\/minerals\/calcium\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">calcium<\/a>, behind in middle school. Getting enough of this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/vitamins-supplements\/minerals\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mineral<\/a>, however, isn\u2019t just important for growing boys and girls\u2014it\u2019s important for anyone with teeth, according to Sands.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTeeth are considered bones, and consuming adequate calcium throughout your lifespan is crucial for maintaining their health,\u201d he explains. They found that those who consumed ample calcium (1,000 milligrams per day for men aged 51 to 70 and 1200 for women\u200951 and over) had lower plaque scores.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Science may show that getting the recommended amount of calcium is key for oral and tooth health, but unfortunately, an estimated <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lpi.oregonstate.edu\/mic\/micronutrient-inadequacies\/overview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">44 percent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Americans are deficient in calcium (also called hypocalcemia). As far as your mouth is concerned, it is common for calcium deficiency to make itself known through tooth decay, increased sensitivity, frequent tooth chipping and cracking, and greater incidence of cavities, says Sands. If you notice an uptick in any of these issues, get to your dentist ASAP and consider paying attention to calcium intake.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou can ensure sufficient calcium intake through foods like dairy products, leafy greens, almonds, and fortified foods,\u201d Sands says. If those foods don\u2019t make a regular appearance in your diet, you may consider a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/vitamins-supplements\/minerals\/calcium\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">calcium supplement<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>2. Vitamin D<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As important as calcium is for oral health, it can\u2019t work as effectively if <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/vitamins-supplements\/letter-vitamins\/vitamin-d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">vitamin D<\/a> isn\u2019t present. \u201cVitamin D is necessary for proper calcium absorption,\u201d says Sands. Basically, it functions as calcium\u2019s taxi driver, carrying it through transcellular pathways in the body and helping it get where it needs to go, per research published in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3405161\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Molecular Cellular Endocrinology<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Given that calcium and vitamin D are, nutritionally speaking, two peas in a pod, to reap the aforementioned benefits of calcium, you also need to get enough vitamin D, says Sands.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The benefits of adequate vitamin D consumption, however, aren\u2019t limited to its role in carrying calcium to and fro. \u201cVitamin D has also been shown to support tooth mineralization,\u201d says Hoang. (That\u2019s the natural tooth repair process.) \u201cRecent <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1111\/jre.13083#:~:text=Evidence%20suggests%20that%20low%20serum,other%20chronic%20non%2Dcommunicable%20diseases.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> even shows that vitamin D helps the body fight gum disease by strengthening the body&#8217;s antibacterial defense system,\u201d she says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How much vitamin D do you need to consume, exactly? Adults should aim to get at least 600 IU per day, according to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ods.od.nih.gov\/factsheets\/VitaminD-HealthProfessional\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Institute of Health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Get less than that and you may experience the oral health issues associated with inadequate calcium consumption, such as brittle teeth, sensitivity, and increased presence of cavities. Orally speaking, \u201cvitamin D deficiency can also cause burning mouth syndrome, dryness, tooth decay, and a metallic taste,\u201d says Hoang.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vitamin D can be consumed through foods like egg yolks, saltwater fish (think salmon, tuna, sardines), liver, and fortified cereals. However, it is primarily <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ods.od.nih.gov\/factsheets\/VitaminD-HealthProfessional\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">obtained<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by sun exposure. If you live in an environment where sunlight is limited or spend little time outside, consider a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/vitamins-supplements\/letter-vitamins\/vitamin-d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">vitamin D supplement<\/a> to fill any potential gaps.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>3. Scurvy, if you don\u2019t know, is a disease marked by vitamin C deficiency that can cause bleeding gums and tooth decay\u2014and that killed millions of sailors who didn\u2019t have access to fresh foods (like citrus) back in the day.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The link between this powerhouse nutrient and your mouth? \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/vitamins-supplements\/letter-vitamins\/vitamin-c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vitamin C<\/a> supports collagen synthesis,\u201d explains Sands. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/natural-beauty-skin\/beauty-supplements\/collagen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Collagen<\/a> supports the health and integrity of the connective tissues in your gums, so when collagen levels dip (as they do when vitamin C is low), your gum health takes a hit, he explains. More specifically, individuals usually notice gum inflammation and increased risk of brushing- and flossing-related gum injury and other gum bleeding.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cVitamin C also supports wound healing and immune function,\u201d Sands says. Fall short on it and those oral cuts that appear will also take longer to heal, putting you at an increased risk for gum infection. Not ideal for anyone.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ods.od.nih.gov\/factsheets\/VitaminC-HealthProfessional\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Institutes of Health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> recommends that men get 90 milligrams of vitamin C per day and that women get 75. To maintain optimal gum health, Sands says it&#8217;s important to meet those recommendations by eating <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/blog\/vitamin-c-foods\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vitamin C-rich foods<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like red bell peppers, kiwi, green bell peppers, brussels sprouts, cantaloupe, kale, and citrus fruits. \u201cYou might also consider supplementation under medical guidance,\u201d he adds.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>4. Vitamin K\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More than <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lpi.oregonstate.edu\/mic\/micronutrient-inadequacies\/overview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">two-thirds<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of adults don&#8217;t get the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ods.od.nih.gov\/factsheets\/VitaminK-HealthProfessional\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recommended<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> amounts of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/blog\/vitamin-k1-and-k2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">vitamin K<\/a> (120 micrograms daily for men and 90 for women). Systemically, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">inadequate<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> vitamin K intake can result in a slew of complications,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK536983\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> including bleeding and blood clotting disorders, impaired bone development and health, and potential cardiovascular risks<\/a>. As far as your mouth is concerned, vitamin K deficiency can lead to inflamed and bleeding gums, says Hoang. Vitamin K protects your gums from oxidative damage, which is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5320832\/#:~:text=Oxidative%20stress%20is%20associated%20with,the%20destruction%20of%20periodontal%20tissues.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">associated<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with periodontitis and other oral health diseases, she adds.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Further, research published in 2020 in the journal <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/31940621\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Monographs in Oral Science<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suggests that because vitamin K deficiency can increase the overall risk of hemorrhage, it may increase the risk for individuals who undergo oral surgery or suffer an oral injury. Since vitamin K helps <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/conditions\/vitamins-and-minerals\/vitamin-k\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">support<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> blood clotting, deficiency can slow healing and increase bleeding risk.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vitamin K is most abundant in green leafy vegetables, soybeans, and fortified foods. But if meat and potatoes make up the bulk of your diet, you might consider adding vitamin K to your supplement routine. But B vitamins <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC9662251\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">act as coenzymes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in enzymatic processes that support cellular functioning, including those within the brain and central nervous system, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">well<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au\/health\/healthyliving\/vitamin-b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> energy production<\/a>.
