While the overall incidence of advanced-stage colorectal cancer has increased by eight percent from the mid-2000s to 2019, it\u2019s jumped up 20 percent among people under 55, according to a recent study published by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.org\/content\/dam\/cancer-org\/research\/cancer-facts-and-statistics\/colorectal-cancer-facts-and-figures\/colorectal-cancer-facts-and-figures-2023.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Cancer Society.\u00a0<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Colorectal cancer describes cancer of the colon (large intestine) and cancer of the rectum (the terminal end of the gastrointestinal tract located just before the anus), explains Kevin E. Woods, M.D., M.P.H., chief of Interventional Endoscopy, Gastroenterology and Nutrition at the City of Hope Cancer Center in Atlanta. \u201cColorectal cancer occurs when abnormal polyps form in the colon and\/or rectum and develop into cancer over time,\u201d he says. \u201cWe believe that, when healthy cells that line the colon become damaged or changed, mutations in their cell programming (DNA) create an environment for continued cellular growth in which the damaged cells are unable to stop dividing and form a precancerous polyp.\u201d As the polyp grows, these cells can spread out and travel to other parts of the body.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A number of factors are known to increase the risk of this particular type of cancer. For example, persons of African American descent are more than 20 percent more likely to get colorectal cancer and about 40 percent more likely to die from it than other racial and ethnic groups, according to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.org\/cancer\/latest-news\/colorectal-cancer-rates-higher-in-african-americans-rising-in-younger-people.html#:~:text=African%20Americans%20are%20about%2020,it%20than%20most%20other%20groups.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Cancer Society.\u00a0<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some genetic variables, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bmccancer.biomedcentral.com\/articles\/10.1186\/s12885-023-11328-w#:~:text=In%20conclusion%2C%20in%20this%20meta,colorectal%20cancer%20genetic%20testing%20panel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">having the BRCA gene<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/health\/conditions-and-diseases\/familial-adenomatous-polyposis#:~:text=Children%20with%20FAP%20develop%20hundreds,FAP%20lead%20normal%2C%20healthy%20lives.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK431096\/#:~:text=Lynch%20syndrome%20is%20the%20most,and%20function%20of%20their%20proteins.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lynch syndrome<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer), can also impact your risk. Family history, of course, is also a factor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Patients with a history of inflammatory bowel disease (like large bowel Crohn\u2019s disease or ulcerative colitis) also have a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/30267862\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">higher risk of developing colorectal cancer.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em style=\"font-family: 'Josefin Sans', Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 0.875rem; font-weight: bold; text-transform: uppercase;\"><strong>ABOUT OUR EXPERTS: <\/strong><\/em><em><em><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Andrew Moore, M.D., is a Chicago-based gastroenterologist. Rabia de Latour, M.D., is a double board-certified gastroenterologist and therapeutic endoscopist in New York City.<\/span><\/em><\/em><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Why The Rise In Colorectal Cancer?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Given that colorectal cancer is generally considered to be a preventable disease, it\u2019s alarming to see an increase in diagnoses and deaths, suggests Woods. Here, he and other gastroenterologists share their theories about why colorectal cancer is on the rise\u2014and what to do to minimize your risk.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>More older adults are getting screened\u2014but younger adults are not.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhat we\u2019ve seen since the early 1990s is an overall decrease in the incidence and mortality of colorectal cancer in older adults, which is largely due to the use of colonoscopy as a tool for both screening and prevention,\u201d says Chicago-based gastroenterologist Andrew Moore, M.D. \u201cUnfortunately, for adults under the age of 50, we\u2019re seeing the opposite trend; the incidence of colorectal cancer among adults younger than 50 has nearly doubled since the mid-1990s.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also troubling: Since younger adults don\u2019t fit the typical requirements that warrant earlier screenings, they\u2019re more likely to be diagnosed with later-stage cancer, he says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf you do not have a family member in the first degree (mother, father, siblings, or children) with a history of colon polyps or cancer, you are considered average risk, which means you should be screened for the potential of a colon polyp or cancer at age 45,\u201d Moore says. If you have a family history of colon cancer or carry any genes that increase your risk, advocate for earlier screenings. Typically, you\u2019d start at age <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">40, or 10 years younger than the age of your youngest affected relative when diagnosed<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Obesity rates are increasing<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the biggest risk factors for colon cancer, as well as many other types of cancer, is being overweight or obese. Unfortunately, nearly one in three (30.7 percent) and more than two in five (42.4 percent) of U.S. adults are overweight and obese respectively, according to data from the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.niddk.nih.gov\/health-information\/health-statistics\/overweight-obesity#:~:text=Nearly%201%20in%203%20adults%20(30.7%25)%20are%20overweight.&amp;text=More%20than%202%20in%205%20adults%20(42.4%25)%20have%20obesity.&amp;text=About%201%20in%2011%20adults%20(9.2%25)%20have%20severe%20obesity.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Institutes of Health (NIH).<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8220;In the southern and midwestern United States, where we see the highest increases in early-onset colorectal cancer, there are also higher rates of obesity,&#8221; says Moore.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The connection here: \u201cObesity is linked to chronic inflammation and insulin resistance, both of which can promote the development of cancerous growths in the colon,\u201d Moore says.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>We\u2019re eating more processed foods than ever<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An ever-growing body of research has linked <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/blog\/how-to-cut-processed-foods\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ultra-processed food<\/a> to chronic illnesses, including cancer. For example, one study published in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0002916522001253#:~:text=Results,except%20Hispanics%2C%20in%20stratified%20analyses.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that increased highly processed food consumption was correlated to higher risks of obesity, heart disease, metabolic syndrome, and some cancers, including colon cancer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Read More: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/blog\/i-cut-out-added-sugar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8216;I Cut Out Added Sugar For 2 Weeks\u2014Here&#8217;s What Happened&#8217;<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One possibility here is that previous generations exposed to processed foods may have acquired genetic mutations that were then passed down to the current generation and are now contributing to this increase in colorectal cancer rates among young adults, Moore says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Antibiotic use Is Off the Charts<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Breakthrough research is starting to uncover a potential link between oral antibiotic use early in life and increased incidence of colorectal cancer at a younger age. The study, published in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41416-021-01665-7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">British Journal of Cancer,<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> looked at data from nearly 30,000 people and suggested that antibiotics may play a role in tumor formation in the colon. \u201cWhile the mechanism is not entirely clear, it may be related to changes in the gut microbiome that result from antibiotic use,\u201d says Moore. This is quite concerning, especially considering that global antibiotic consumption rates <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ox.ac.uk\/news\/2021-11-16-global-antibiotic-consumption-rates-increased-46-percent-2000#:~:text=Between%202000%20and%202018%2C%20global,per%201000%20population%20per%20day).&amp;text=In%20low%2D%20and%20middle%2Dincome%20countries%2C%20there%20was%20a,DDD%20per%201000%20per%20day).\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increased by 46 percent between 2000 and 2018<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. (Thankfully, you <em>can<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/blog\/support-your-gut-on-antibiotics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">take steps to support your gut while taking antibiotics<\/a>, such as incorporating a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/digestion\/probiotics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">high-quality probiotic supplement<\/a>, getting plenty of rest, and minimizing sugar and processed foods.)<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Access to healthcare is limited for many Americans<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately, disparities in access to healthcare and screening services are prevalent in the United States\u2014and may be contributing to higher colon cancer rates in certain populations, explains Woods. For example, Black patients have a near-20 percent higher incidence of colorectal cancer, according to research published in the journal <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8968072\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Surgical Oncology Clinics of North America<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014and this is due, in part, to a lack of access to quality healthcare. \u201cIndividuals with limited access to preventive care may be less likely to undergo screening or receive timely diagnosis and treatment for colorectal cancer,\u201d he says.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>How to reduce your colon cancer risk<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Currently, average-risk patients have a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.org\/content\/dam\/cancer-org\/research\/cancer-facts-and-statistics\/colorectal-cancer-facts-and-figures\/colorectal-cancer-facts-and-figures-2020-2022.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">four percent lifetime risk of developing colorectal cancer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. And while this disease <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> affect anyone, there\u2019s a lot you can do to lower your risk.\u00a0<\/span><b><\/b><\/p>\n<h3><b>Clean up your plate<\/b><b><\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You know a healthy diet is important, but may not realize how intrinsic it is to reducing your risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, obesity, and several cancers (including colorectal cancer!), per the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nutrition\/about-nutrition\/why-it-matters.html#:~:text=People%20with%20healthy%20eating%20patterns,these%20conditions%20and%20prevent%20complications.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CDC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Start by focusing on eating a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rabia de Latour, M.D., a double board-certified gastroenterologist and therapeutic endoscopist in New York City, specifically recommends eating a diet high in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/digestion-gut-health\/fiber\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fiber<\/a> and low in saturated fats to promote digestive health and reduce inflammation. Excessive alcohol consumption (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/drinklessbeyourbest\/excessivedrinking.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which is four or more drinks for women and five or more for men on a single occasion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) is linked to an increased risk of colorectal cancer, per research from the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/coloncancerfoundation.org\/alcohol-destroying-your-liver-and-colon-increasing-your-risk-of-early-crc\/#:~:text=When%20being%20compared%20with%20the,higher%20risk%20of%20rectal%20cancer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Colon Cancer Foundation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Smoking, meanwhile, is associated with an increased risk of various types of cancer, colorectal cancer included.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Get screened<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last but not least, stay up-to-date with recommended colon cancer screenings. As noted earlier, average-risk individuals should start screenings at age 45. If you have a family history of colon cancer or advanced polyps, begin at age 40, or 10 years before the age of the immediate family member when they were diagnosed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cColonoscopy is very effective for both detecting <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> preventing colorectal cancer,\u201d Moore says. \u201cThose who get colonoscopies at the recommended screening intervals have a significantly reduced risk of developing colorectal cancer.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Colorectal cancer has long been one of the more common types of cancer in both men and women in the United States, but, in recent years, it\u2019s become alarmingly more prevalent.
