Bubbly drinks like soda and seltzer often use something called hydrostatic pressure to create bubbles, which can lead to excess air in the digestive system once consumed, explains McKinney.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, alcoholic beverages can irritate the gastrointestinal tract and lead to unwanted symptoms like bloating, according to research published in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5513683\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alcohol Research<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This is mainly because alcohol is an inflammatory agent and can keep the protective mucus lining the GI tract from working quite as effectively, while also throwing off the balance between \u201cgood\u201d and \u201cbad\u201d bacteria that help keep bloating at bay.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fruit drinks like orange juice, grape juice, and fruit punch may also cause bloating. The reason? Increased gas production is a common side effect when your system attempts to digest these sugars, the researchers say.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For individuals who are sensitive to carbonated beverages, alcohol, and\/or fruit drinks, the easiest solution is to limit intake. For instance, it&#8217;s common for individuals to become lactose intolerant around <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhsinform.scot\/illnesses-and-conditions\/nutritional\/lactose-intolerance\/#:~:text=Lactose%20intolerance%20can%20develop%20at,children%20can%20also%20be%20affected.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">middle age<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014and the average age for celiac disease diagnosis is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondceliac.org\/living-with-celiac-disease\/womens-health\/prevalence\/#:~:text=It's%20estimated%20that%20the%20average,40%20to%2060%20years%20old.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">40 to 60<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> years old.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe sensitivity of the digestive system tends to increase as an individual ages,\u201d McKinney explains. Meanwhile, the body reduces its production of certain digestive enzymes, which can make it more difficult to digest certain foods.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Given this, if you&#8217;re experiencing bloating after foods that never used to bother your stomach, you\u2019d be wise to chat with an allergist, immunologist, or gastroenterologist. Ditto if you are experiencing other s<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ymptoms<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of food intolerance, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allergy.org.au\/patients\/food-other-adverse-reactions\/food-intolerance#:~:text=Food%20intolerance%20is%20a%20broad,recurrent%20mouth%20ulcers%20or%20headaches.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stomach pain, headaches, rashes, a runny nose, or swelling<\/a>. As such, individuals increase their rate of digestion as they put on muscle mass, ultimately limiting the amount of time the food spends in the GI tract.
