Here are six serious health issues that could be linked to your trouble between the sheets.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>1. Cardiovascular disease<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To have healthy erections, you need good blood flow, which can be compromised when you have any cardiovascular issue, explains <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/centersforsexualmedicine.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paul Gittens, M.D.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a urologist specializing in sexual health at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dunnpelliermedia.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dunn Pellier Media<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, excess atherosclerosis (a buildup of plaque in the arteries) can lead to both coronary heart disease and a decrease in blood flow, including to the penis. Chronic inflammation, which can be related to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">high blood pressure and high cholesterol, can also affect the endothelium, the blood vessels&#8217; inner lining, which is responsible for vasodilation, or the widening of blood vessel walls to boost blood flow, adds Gittens.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Experiencing endothelial dysfunction, in which the blood vessels can&#8217;t dilate enough to improve blood flow throughout the body, can <em>first<\/em> affect the blood vessels of the penis, putting a damper on erections, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/health\/wellness-and-prevention\/erectile-dysfunction-and-your-health-5-things-you-need-to-know\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Johns Hopkins Medicine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Liver disease\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Any liver dysfunction can increase systemic inflammation, leading to issues with the dilation of blood vessels and thus trouble in the erection department, says Gittens. The liver also produces a protein called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/25800960\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sex hormone-binding globulin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that binds to testosterone and supports sexual function. When\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the liver doesn\u2019t function properly, it may overproduce this protein, causing too much testosterone to become &#8220;locked up,&#8221; preventing the muscle response needed to facilitate erections, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gittens explains.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>4. Kidney disease\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The liver and kidneys are deeply interconnected, so issues in the kidneys can also contribute to erectile dysfunction. Specifically, the <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC4491929\/#:~:text=Sexual%20dysfunction%20is%20highly%20prevalent,dysfunction%20and%20ED%5B3%5D.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">research<\/a> suggests kidney conditions are linked with low testosterone (which contributes to low libido and erectile dysfunction).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>5. Neurological disorders\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Understandably, any neurological disorder can affect sexual performance. \u201cNeurological disorders can interfere with the nerves responsible for erections,\u201d Houman says. As such, in some cases, ED may indicate conditions including Parkinson&#8217;s disease and even <a href=\"https:\/\/tau.amegroups.org\/article\/view\/9075\/9706#:~:text=well%20(32).-,Multiple%20sclerosis%20(MS),not%20just%20the%20neurologic%20impairment.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">multiple sclerosis<\/a>. Sleep apnea\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sleep apnea can affect more in the bedroom than just your sleep quality. It\u2019s associated with reduced oxygen levels and vascular health, which can<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> disrupt blood flow\u2014including to the penis\u2014potentially contributing to ED, Houman explains. Sleep apnea can also impact your bedroom performance via testosterone. Here are six must-do&#8217;s for boosting sexual health and keeping chronic conditions at bay.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>1. Check in with a doctor<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gittens advises checking in with a physician as soon as you notice any shifts in your sexual function. Get plenty of exercise\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exercise is an obvious must-do for cardiovascular health. Ideally, your routine includes <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at least three to four hours of cardio per week, whether that&#8217;s jogging, walking briskly, or using a matching like an elliptical or stationary bike, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> says Gittens. Just make sure you\u2019re sweating, exerting energy, and getting your heart rate up to reap the benefits.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t forget about resistance training, either.
