Volpe specifically points to irritability, depression, and\/or restlessness as indicative of various types of B vitamin deficiencies.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Why Certain Groups Are More at Risk<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As with most nutrient deficiencies, people in certain demographics are more susceptible to getting low on B vitamins. Women of childbearing age are one hefty chunk of the population that\u2019s often affected. \u201cWomen are at risk for low B vitamin levels because they have increased physiological needs throughout the reproductive cycle, especially during pregnancy and lactation,\u201d says Jennifer Bianchini, M.S., R.D.N., I.F.N.C.P., founder of<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Body to Soul Health<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cDuring their reproductive years, hormonal fluctuations throughout the menstrual cycle increase the need for certain B vitamins.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vegetarians (especially vegans) are another group at high risk. \u201cB12 is naturally found almost exclusively in animal-based foods,\u201d Bianchini explains. \u201cVegetarians who consume dairy and eggs (lacto-ovo vegetarians) have a lower risk than vegans but may still fall short without fortified foods or supplements.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People with digestive conditions, a history of gastric surgery, or those on certain medications may have absorption problems that impact B vitamin uptake, Bianchini notes. And if you\u2019re in your later years, your levels may start to dip. \u201cAs we age, the stomach produces less intrinsic factor\u2014a protein required for B12 absorption\u2014and less stomach acid, both of which impair B12 absorption,\u201d she says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t forget the effects of lifestyle, either. According to Bianchini, chronic stress can deplete several B vitamins, especially B5 (pantothenic acid) and B6, which are used in energy metabolism and adrenal hormone production. Try some with a sprinkle of<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pumpkin seeds<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which are a good source of niacin, folate, and vitamin B6.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Nutritional yeast<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Bianchini says people on a plant-based diet can include nutritional yeast not only for its cheesy flavor, but for its added vitamin B12 content. However, Volpe notes that this form of B12 is synthetic and may not be absorbed as efficiently as forms found in animal products.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Leafy greens and legumes. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Need to bring up folate levels? Turn to beans and greens. They\u2019re an <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">excellent food source<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of this B vitamin.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Milk and meat.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> These animal foods are naturally <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">abundant<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in vitamin B2, also known as riboflavin. For an even greater B boost, try liver. \u201cBeef and chicken liver are very nutrient-dense foods, naturally containing a significant amount of almost all types of B vitamins,\u201d Volpe says. She suggests making them into a p\u00e2t\u00e9 or blending them into meatloaf to make them more palatable.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Peanuts and peanut butter<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In a PBJ, nutty parfait, or trail mix, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC3257681\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">peanuts and their butter<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are a great way to raise your niacin, vitamin B6, and folate intake.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>When to Consider a Supplement<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cultivating a varied diet is always a smart move, but in some cases, dietary changes alone may not resolve a B vitamin deficiency. Bianchini says certain health conditions and long-term stressors can make supplementation necessary.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The only way to know where your levels fall is to undergo a blood test. \u201cIf you\u2019re experiencing symptoms like fatigue, brain fog, mood swings, tingling hands or feet, or poor digestion, it may be time to check your B vitamin levels and supplement,\u201d Bianchini says. People with a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MTHFR gene<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> variant may have a reduced ability to metabolize certain forms of B vitamins, and may benefit from methylated forms\u2014but should speak with a healthcare provider first,\u201d Volpe says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just note that, even though vitamin B is water-soluble\u2014meaning any excess amounts will get flushed out through your urine\u2014side effects are still possible.
