Know that taking fish oil with food could also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arthritis.org\/health-wellness\/treatment\/complementary-therapies\/supplements-and-vitamins\/stop-fish-oil-aftertaste\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">minimize the nuisance of fishy burps<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>2. Fat-Soluble Vitamins (A, D, E, and K)<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You might remember from science class that fat-soluble vitamins require a source of fat for effective delivery. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fat-soluble vitamins do just that\u2014they dissolve in fat\u2014so it\u2019s best to take them with a source of dietary fat for them to be properly absorbed,\u201d says Kaytee Hadley, M.S., R.D.N., I.F.M.C.P., functional medicine dietitian and founder of Holistic Health and Wellness in Richmond, VA. If you\u2019re supplementing with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/vitamins-supplements\/letter-vitamins\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">vitamins A, D, E, and\/or K<\/a>, pair them with something like a heart-healthy olive oil, a serving of cheese, or a handful of nuts. (Carbs or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/protein-fitness\/protein-powders\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">protein<\/a> alone won\u2019t do the trick.)<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>3. Multivitamins<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A good <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/vitamins-supplements\/multivitamins\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">multivitamin<\/a> contains both water- and fat-soluble nutrients, so taking it with food is your <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/health.clevelandclinic.org\/the-best-time-to-take-vitamins\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">best bet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for optimum absorption. After all, you wouldn\u2019t want important vitamins like A, D, E, and K to go to waste! (Again, just be sure whatever meal or snack you choose comes with a source of fat.)\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;ve ever tossed back your multivitamin on an empty stomach and later found yourself pretty queasy, you&#8217;ve learned (the hard way) another reason to get some grub down your gullet before downing your nutritional insurance policy. Large amounts of certain nutrients often included in multivitamins, such as zinc and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/vitamins-supplements\/letter-vitamins\/vitamin-b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">vitamin B12<\/a> (more on that one shortly), can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/blog\/multivitamin-nauseous\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">irritate your digestive system<\/a> without food to serve as a buffer.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>4. Vitamin B12<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vitamin <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">B12 is water-soluble, meaning it doesn\u2019t need fat to get busy working its magic in your bloodstream. Still, Hadley advises taking it with food: \u201cWhile you can take it on an empty stomach, I recommend taking the capsule form with food, especially if it causes an upset stomach.\u201d The reason for the digestive distress? Often, B12 supplements contain super-high amounts of the vitamin. (The <a href=\"https:\/\/ods.od.nih.gov\/factsheets\/VitaminB12-HealthProfessional\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">RDA for vitamin B12 for most adults<\/a> is 2.4 micrograms, but many supplements pack <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/p\/b12-1000-mcg-300-lozenges\/vs-1063\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">between 500 and 1,000 micrograms<\/a>.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since vitamin B12 is involved in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">energy production<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you may want to reserve your dose for breakfast time to promote energy levels throughout the day.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>The Bottom Line<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The most important advice to listen to about supplement timing is your healthcare provider&#8217;s. That said, certain supplements are generally better friends to your health (and stomach!) when taken alongside some food. If you don&#8217;t always get it quite right, don&#8217;t sweat it.
