But quieting your hunger signals isn\u2019t all they do. \u201cGLP-1 medications work by targeting areas of the brain that regulate both appetite and satiety,” says registered dietitian Jamie Mills, R.D.N., C.D.N., creator of The Sleeved Dietitian. “In doing so, they can also unintentionally mute thirst signals.”<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This stunting of your thirst sensitivity can make you forget to drink. \u201cI hear it all the time, my clients will tell me, \u2018I had two bites of food all day and realized I hadn\u2019t had any water,\u2019\u201d Mills says. In fact, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/32623637\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2020 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that people on GLP-1 drugs had significantly reduced water intake\u2014so much so that researchers speculated the drugs could be used to treat people with excessive thirst.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, some of GLP-1’s common side effects can deplete your fluid reserves. Gastrointestinal issues like nausea, diarrhea, and vomiting are by far the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/staying-healthy\/glp-1-diabetes-and-weight-loss-drug-side-effects-ozempic-face-and-more\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">most common side effects associated with these drugs<\/span><\/a>\u2014<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and they certainly don\u2019t help in the hydration department.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cutting back on carbs\u2014as many people do when pursuing weight loss\u2014could further exacerbate the issue. \u201cIf someone reduces carbs, they naturally lose more water and sodium, which adds to the dehydration risk,\u201d says Mills. (The body responds to an absence of carbs by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/synergies.oregonstate.edu\/2020\/the-low-carb-conundrum-what-does-research-say\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pulling fluid stores<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> out of the liver and skeletal muscles.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, if exercise is a part of your weight-loss journey, you might lose extra fluids through sweat\u2014especially if you work out in warm weather, she adds.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Signs of Dehydration to Watch for<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spotting GLP-1-related dehydration may be harder than you expect. \u201cGLP-1 medications can blunt your thirst cues, so you might not realize you’re becoming dehydrated until symptoms start to build,\u201d says registered dietitian Bonnie Newlin, M.P.A., M.S., R.D., C.D.N., C.L.T., creator of Crave Nourishment. In other words, simply waiting for feelings of thirst might not be enough. \u201cSigns of dehydration can show up as dry mouth, fatigue, dizziness, lightheadedness, headaches, dark yellow urine, constipation, and muscle cramps, particularly in the legs,\u201d she says. These more serious symptoms warrant a consultation with your healthcare provider.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>How To Get Your Fluid Fix While on GLP-1s<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you’re taking a GLP-1, extra vigilance around hydration may be necessary. \u201cThese medications help you <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not think about food (and inherently reduce your thirst signals), so you\u2019ve got to outsmart that,\u201d Mills says. Having a bottle close at hand is a good visual reminder.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Invest in a bottle that suits your personal style<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. When you like the look and feel of your water container, you may be more likely to tote it around with you.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Try room-temperature liquids<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. According to Mills, cold water can trigger nausea for some people taking GLP-1s, while room-temperature fluids may go down more easily.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Set hourly hydration reminders on your phone or other device<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
