It\u2019s also especially important for your heart and brain, both of which require enormous amounts of energy to function, notes Lane. \u201cTo make matters trickier, many Baby Boomers take statin medications for cholesterol, which <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">further deplete CoQ10 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and can leave you feeling fatigued or achy,\u201d she says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She recommends supplementing with CoQ10 in its active form, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/vitamins-supplements\/antioxidants\/co-q10-ubiquinol\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ubiquinol<\/a>, which is easier for the body to absorb and use. \u201cRestoring those levels <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC4025630\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">helps your cells generate energy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> more effectively, supports heart function, and can even ease the muscle pain that sometimes comes with statin use,\u201d she says. \u201cMost older adults do well with 100 to 200 milligrams per day, taken with a meal that contains fat for better absorption.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CoQ10 is generally safe, but Lane points out that it can sometimes slightly lower blood pressure, so she suggests double-checking with your provider before supplementing if you\u2019re already on blood pressure meds.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>5. Curcumin<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If stiff knees or achy hands keep you from daily walks or pickleball, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/herbs-natural-remedies\/popular-herbs\/turmeric\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">curcumin<\/a> (the active compound in turmeric) belongs on your radar. Research has shown curcumin is an all-star for joint comfort. On average, people saw lower total cholesterol, LDL (\u201cbad\u201d) cholesterol, and triglycerides, along with a small bump in HDL (\u201cgood\u201d) cholesterol.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMost <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC5003001\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">clinical studies <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on joint function and inflammatory response use about 500 to 1,000 milligrams of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/herbs-natural-remedies\/popular-herbs\/turmeric\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">standardized curcumin extract<\/a> per day, often split into two doses (morning and evening),\u201d says Crum. \u201cLook for forms that are paired with black pepper extract (piperine) or labeled as \u2018enhanced absorption\u2019 (like phytosome or water-dispersible formulas), since curcumin by itself isn\u2019t absorbed well.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>6.
