Plenty of foods, from good ol\u2019 potato chips to a seemingly innocent can of vegetable soup, are notoriously crammed with high levels of sodium. So, it\u2019s no surprise that a study published in the<a href=\"http:\/\/bmjopen.bmj.com\/content\/3\/12\/e003733\"> <em>British Medical Journal<\/em><\/a> found that the mean global sodium intake is nearly twice the recommended limit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese days, there is just so much extra sodium in all of our food,\u201d says Stacy Rothschild, R.D., founder of<a href=\"http:\/\/www.newleafnj.com\/\"> New Leaf Nutrition<\/a>. \u201cEven someone trying to eat minimally processed food is getting more than their share and daily recommended dietary allowance of<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/ForConsumers\/ConsumerUpdates\/ucm181577.htm\"> 1500-2300 mg per day<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Too Much Salt Is Risky<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Going to town on the salt shaker is certainly not recommended, but what are the exact risks? For one, high blood pressure.<\/p>\n<p>Excess sodium pulls water out of cells and into the blood stream, and over time, blood volume increases and raises blood pressure, explains Rachita Reddy, MD, a double board-certified nephrologist and internist. High blood pressure is a<a href=\"http:\/\/c34193.sgvps.net\/~mauricez\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Sodium_Fact_Sheet-1.pdf\"> major risk factor for heart disease and stroke<\/a>, notes the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/search?search=kidneys\">kidneys<\/a> regulate the levels of salt in our body by getting rid of the excess, but when there is a constant overload, the kidneys can\u2019t keep up and salt is retained in the body. This causes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/c\/water-balance\/N-8in?search1=water%20retention\">water retention<\/a> and fluid shifts, which stress the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/search?search=heart\">heart<\/a>, blood vessels, and kidneys, and increase heart attack and stroke risk. Being that heart disease and stroke are the nation\u2019s first and third leading causes of death, staying aware of your salt intake is extremely important.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/blog\/2017\/01\/31\/foods-ingredients-nutritionists-wont-eat\/\">7 Foods And Ingredients Nutritionists Won\u2019t\u00a0Eat<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Too Little Salt Is Risky, Too<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It bears noting that <em>balanced<\/em> sodium levels are the key to feeling your best. \u201cSalt is the most concentrated electrolyte in the bloodstream,\u201d explains Dr. Reddy. \u201cIts vital roles include muscle contraction and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/search?search=relax\">relaxation<\/a>, nerve conduction and signaling, and maintaining proper fluid balance.\u201d So don\u2019t give up on salt just yet!<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLetting your body\u2019s stores of the nutrient drop <em>too<\/em> low can lead to muscle cramping, postural dizziness, nausea, heatstroke, and shock,\u201d says Dr. Reddy. \u201cSince<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/search?search=sodium\"> sodium<\/a> is not produced by the body, consumption is obligatory to maintain adequate balance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Consider runners or athletes. They need to keep their bodies running like well-oiled machines\u2014so they\u2019re definitely making sure they\u2019re getting enough sodium. They\u2019re obviously sweating more, and in turn, losing more sodium\u2014up to 1000+ mg in sweat per hour of active exercise, Dr. Reddy says.<\/p>\n<p>But what about the rest of us?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn average, healthy adults lose between 500-1500 mg of sodium daily through sweat, breathing, and urination,\u201d notes Dr. Reddy. Read product labels, use half the salt you tend to use, and make sure that the salt you\u2019re consuming is iodized, which, according to Brian Tanzer, M.S., C.N.S., nutritionist and manager of scientific affairs for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaminshoppe.com\/\">The Vitamin Shoppe<\/a>, is important because iodine deficiency can impact things like your energy levels and your thyroid functions.<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, when in doubt about striking the right balance with sodium, it\u2019s best to steer toward whole foods. \u201cProcessed foods are <em>not<\/em> where you want to be getting your sodium from!\u201d says<a href=\"http:\/\/www.francesholmescnc.com\/\"> Frances Holmes<\/a>, C.N.C. \u201cHealthy sources include sea salt, certain seaweeds like dulse, and all fruits and vegetables.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Upping your intake of these\u2014 while doing your best not to go to town on those potato chips\u2014will ensure you\u2019re fueling your sodium intake in the best possible way.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Are you eating way too much salt?
